CNN explains the case a lot better than I could. The very short TL;DR version is that an eighteen-year old dude who was already probably at least somewhat suicidal had an (online) girlfriend who sent him a whole bunch of text messages encouraging him to do it.

Eventually, he followed through, and now she's on bench trial for involuntary manslaughter.

My first thought when the case was first publicized, and still is, is that that's nuts. She didn't kill him. But at the same time, she's clearly fucked up pretty bad and probably does deserve some kind of punishment. But did she break the law?

Reminds me a little of all the cases where girls (and sometimes boys) kill themselves due to social media bullying. Those have been arrested and prosecuted from time to time, but in almost all such cases, there was another law broken, i.e. child pornography, etc.

I'm curious what people think.

It's a tough one. Like one text of "KYS" or something can probably slide, but she really went overboard on this one. I think involuntary manslaughter is probably an appropriate charge to pursue, but I can see it being a tough case to get a guilty verdict on.

I saw this one on the news last night. My first thought was "what a load of shit"...

Then I saw the TXT exchanges between the two. The real bad one, one I didn't see on that site was where he was in the process of killing himself, got out of the truck he was gassing himself in, sent her a TXT stating he was scared and she told him to man-up, get back in the truck and take care of business.

She also gave him instructions on gassing himself as well as constant encouragement as well as claiming that his parents would be happy for him once he did it.

I don't have a clue how I would handle this...but this broad is off her rocker, that's for sure. She definitely had a hand in pushing that fella off the ledge.

*EDIT*
This kind of shit:

Reading those (and others), the bitch is missing some parts...

I'm continually dumbfounded by how many teens kill themselves over online shit. This one, the various girls, the 13-year-old boy who thought his girlfriend had killed herself, the 17-year-old guy whose pregnant gf killed herself and then got blamed for it by all her friends, it's wild.

Punishments for wicked people aren't enough. She should be skinned alive, and her mother forced to eat the pelt while the father get slowly buttfucked to death with the potato peeler that removed his daughter's skin, eyelids removed by same peeler.

Dont make a quick judgement based on the headline. Read the texts and situation. Smokehouse pointed out some key points well.

This does deserve trial and punishment.
It's just like sitting in the getaway car while someone else commits murder. You will also be charged with murder even if you didn't know the person was out shooting people.

She should also be forced to eat the car he did it in, over the course of a year. I wonder how his final urination which soaked into the cloth seats will taste when she gets to that part.

The guy was crazy. But it's not okay to exploit his craziness.

Death penalty for the bitch.

Yeah, that's pretty fucked up. Suicide is ultimately a personal decision, but she was definitely contributing to his downward spiral and should suffer some consequences. Rather than egging him on, she should have been trying to get him some help.

On a related note, I didn't know the kid at all, and only read about it in the local newspaper, but this happened recently less than 20 miles from where I live:

I don't know the full story, only read what was in that article, but the kid tried to kill himself previously. It's not as if she orchestrated the entire thing. It sounds like she also tried to get him help in the past. A few years ago I had an addict friend who would get all fucked up and start texting me suicidal shit. Many a night I would spend a lot of time talking him out of it, telling him reasons to live, think about his kids, etc. If I was a teenager I could see myself in that situation getting pissed having to do that again and again and just being like "fucking do it, man." I realize there's more to the story than that, but that's my firsthand experience dealing with someone who is suicidal.

Smart move by the lawyer to waive the trial, it'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

Still though. She should have showed the text messages to his family or some authority. She was better off ignoring his text messages if she was tired of it instead of persuading him to kill himself. Hope this chick see's some time behind bars. Nothing will probably come of it though.

Interesting. If you encourage someone to do something great, can you sue them for compensation? Or do we just like punishing people for satisfaction?

I don't know, man, that's kind of apples-oranges. Encouraging a person to do something good/productive with their life -vs- helping to push a mentally ill individual to suicide is not really the same thing.

Although the case may seem silly to some, there really should be repercussions in place for assisting a suicide. Yes, convincing a mentally ill person to kill themselves counts as assistance. The really sad thing is, in Canada at least, assisted suicide by a doctor may become legal at some point. She's not a doctor though.

Yeah, she was ice cold. They're both mentally ill.

Sounds like he broke her down too - sad
