NeoGeo Pocket SD Flash Cartridge Progress

Hello good NeoGeo people! I'm just starting this thread as a place to post information on an upcoming NGP SD flash cart.

Just to get this straight, this isn't a pre-order thread, or a request for money to develop this, or anything like that. Just purely information on my progress and to see what interest there is for this.

And apologies that everything I hold shakes about in the video. My genetics don't lend themselves well to steady hands...

Cost wise its likely to be around the same as the Lynx SD -- so around the 70 mark. Oh, and, as a bit of background, I'm the guy producing the Lynx SD cartridge. So I have prior experience and a very good reputation for having happy customers.

Any questions, please feel free to ask.

    Hell yeah, man.

Cant see the video at work, a few questions:

-MicroSD support? That would be key as my other flash carts use them.
-Color and B/W games supported? Is this a question that has an obvious answer?

    Yep, micro SD FAT formatted.

And yep, colour and B/W games. That just seems to be a difference in the ROM header. I'll need to get myself a NGP B&W to test if it works with the non-colour hardware...

There's already a Flash Cart for the Pocket Color isn't there? Seems like it only supports 2 Roms per cart though.

Just a quick rundown of what I have planned for those who dont want to listen to me drone on for five minutes...

It will have 16mb of flash memory on the cart, 15mb of this will be available for storing games, 512KB on each of the flash memories will be reserved for cart / system use (there are 2x 8mb flash memories). It has this much storage as flashing a game can take a while, so it gives you the chance to install several games to play quickly.

When you play one of the installed games, if its not the current "active" game, it will take a few seconds to switch around a few flash blocks to save any save data back to the correct place in the cart (as the NGPC flashes have several different block sizes smaller than the standard 64K, I have to map them into the reserved 512K block) and setup the saves for the new game.

You will be able to save any installed game back to the micro sd as well, so you can save progress in any game.

The source code for the NeoGeo side will be made opensource (as I have done with the LynxSD) so people can change the menu and write things which use the SD card if they want.

Also, I will be producing these until no-one wants them any more, so availability wont be an issue. Although it can take me a while to actually make the things as I'll be using custom 3D printed cases. But again, I don't take any money until the cart is ready to ship, so it's not really a problem.

Yeah indeed, the Neo Flash Masta or there's the Bung one. The limitation is having to program it from a PC and only being able to store 1 or 2 games. This is a proper SD card solution for those wanting to play any game directly from the NGPC.

Both good! Just throwing another option out there.

    Thanks.

I've worked hard at having a very good reputation on AtariAge with the Lynx SD, so you can expect the same service here for those who are not aware of me.

If you can manage 100% compatibility & I can load it up with the full romset then I'm in. A Neo Geo Pocket & AES Flash cart all in one year. Good time to be an SNK fan.

Yeah, that's the plan! I'll be getting people testing this cart thoroughly prior to any sales, so if it's not 100% compatible, this will be made very clear.

I don't see why it wont be, mind you. I have plenty of space on the programmable logic to do whatever might be required.

I agree. I have OP's Lynx flash cart and it's great. Really looking forward to the Jag cart. But this one is going to be awesome, as well.

One post which hasn't been informative or directly answering a question, but showing a sense of humor... are you for real?

    Tell myself to listen?
