Upcoming hardware.

I'll start:

Just picked up one of my favorite games from my childhood. Black & White, the first one. Big box and all. Cant wait to get it in the mail and actually play it proper. When I played it in high school my PC wasn't very good, but I played it even though it froze to absolute zero at times. It ran so slow. Luckily I have a windows 98SE rig now.

What are some of your all time favorite PC games?

Here's my setup. It's not perfect, but I like it. Just need a nice chair still and I think I will be happy. My parents got me this desk for christmas, which was a HUGE improvement over my tempered stained glass workstation that couldn't support the weight of my Wacom 24HD.

I only have a few big box PC games still.
Some are Mac, back when i ran OS 9 in college. I still have a decked out Pismo G3 powerbook.

Black and White is a good one. That game has absolutely amazing scale. I loved finding all the little things going on the island.

Marathon Trilogy boxset
Star Wars Pod Racer - I put more hours into the Mac version than Dreamcast
American McGee's Alice - I play through this almost every other year.
Ultima VI - Modern enough to be tolerable but still brutally long and hard.
The Dig - One of my fav LucasArts adventure games. Right before adventure games crashed.
Ultima IX - patched up, it's one of the great open world games ever made. I spent dozens of hours in the museum reading all the exhibits from previous Ultima games.

I recently played Dungeon Keep again, but it got repetitive fast.

You can't really go wrong with any Doom game. They're all awesome, and the custom maps can literally keep you busy forever. I have all the doom games, but only have the big boxed version for Doom II. It has the coolest box art though, so I'm OK with that for now.

Have any of you played a HomeWorld game, or Freespace? I'm trying to decide if I want to track one down. I think it looks awesome, and they seem to have remakes that recently dropped.

I posted my setup pic in the first post.

Still rocking WoW Legion.

MSI GE62 Apache Pro
i7 6700HQ
16GB DDR4
GTX 970 (3GB)
128GB M.2 and pulled the 7200 HDD in favor of a SSD.

Thing runs fantastic. Sounds great too.

What's a "Master Class"?

Anyhow:
The only Big Box I still own is for Schleichfahrt (Archimedean Dynasty, 1996)... played that a lot as a kid. Brings beack memories every time - even though I don't do many computer games anymore, when I was still in school I certainly did. I remember sinking a lot of time into Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (1991), Red Baron II (1997/8), SimCity (1989), Descent I-III (1995-1999), X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (1997). Favorites were also [in no particular order] Jazz Jackrabbit (1994 - soundtrack still sticks with me), Monkey Island I & II (1990&1991), Lemmings (1991), Baphomets Fluch/Broken Sword/Circle of Blood (1996), Diabolo (1996), The Settlers I&II (1993&1996), Age of Empires I-II (1997-2000), Counter-Strike 1.3 (2001), Command and Conquer series (every title up to Generals, so 1995-2003), Elite Force (2000), AquaNox I&II (2001&2003), Unreal Tournament (1999), WarCraft I-II (1994-1999), StarCraft (1998), Enemy Territory (2003), Savage I&II (2003&2008)... I was way too deep into Starlancer (2000) and WC3 (2003).

Titles I recently played and can recommend include Star Trek: Bridge Commander (2000) :keke:

Wow, fuck, what a tanooki post.....

All time favourite PC games? Fury3 was probably one of the first PC games I played the shit out of on a p2 233mhz, 32mb sdram, 2gb hdd and 2mb SiS integrated graphics. Before that I loved brickout on the Apple IIc !

Modern wise though I was hooked on counter strike not long after its release and played the hell out of command and conquer, age of empires etc. I never had the full Duke Nukem 3D as I survived mostly on old demo discs but I spent a lot of time with that too.

Hows that guy running? The CPU I mean. I'm running a i5-4690k 3.5ghz and plan on overclocking when the need arises. Kinda want to get her up to 4ghz. Would I need to go liquid cooled for that?

What's a "Master Class"?

Good question that I do not know the answer to. I wondered the same thing while reading this book last year.

I have this sealed actually but the box is not in too good of shape. I had bought it at KB when they were closing their store in the mall. I should dig it out and put it up on the shelf, I forget about it.

Yeah im running some watercooling to keep that stable, you would definitely need it for the haswell i5 you have. Since sandy bridge (3xxx,4xxx) they have been getting hotter and hotter and do not clock anywhere near as high on the same voltage. They test the efficiency of most watercoolers (prebuilt ones like mine) with the i7 4790 lol its HOT when overclocked.
But in regards to performance its about the same as a current i5 at stock frequencies.

Its not a bad game, repetitive but i kinda want to revisit it.

I've yet to see a need for overclocking these days. Maybe if you had an older i5.
I still go with air cooling as it's more reliable, and modern fans are super quiet.

I dont generally overclock unless i already have a cpu thats getting old and i can squeeze a bit more out before dropping 250 on an upgrade. Which i think pretty soon this cpu might be in That ballpark. Its still going strong but is getting older.
