Hi,

first of all thanks for accepting me in the forum. I've recently fulfilled my childhood dream and bought 2 Neo Geo AES. Both in 'not tested' condition. Both have different problems. This one is has a NEO-AES3-6 board and image problems.

When booting the Logo doesn't appear, the text ist ok. Sound is playing and after a while the foreground of the game is showing up (health bar and 'press start')

You can see this in this short and bad video I've took: http://youtu.be/thgs8Rnxatc

Here is an image of the board:

And here is a part of the board that looks strange to me:

This strange capacitor between the leg of the VRAM and the board doesn't look original.

I've just ordered a unibios and some replacement VRAM, but maybe this won't fix my problem.

Can anybody give me a hint where else to look while waiting for the bios?

Thanks a lot,
Holger

EDIT:
Interesting: I've just 'played' a little more around to see what else could be broken and I've moved the game a little out of the slot (on the right side) while keeping the contacts. The result is following:

the colors are not ok and the sound is now missing. But maybe it's just the cartridge slot which needs a desoldering or the game is broken.

Unfortunately this is my only game yet, so I'm not able to test the console with another cartridge.

Clean the slots with deoxit-d5 and a tick piece of cardboard OR you can apply some with a cotton swab to the game's connector and insert and remove from the system about 5 times then wipe it off the game's connector and reapply and repeat the process until clean.

Thanks for the idea. I try to find deoxit-d5 or something similar here in Europe and will try cleaning the contacts.

Hi,

I was not able to find dioxit-d5 but I've used some other anti-oxidant for electronics to clean the board. I've installed a Unibios on a socket. The system behaviour is still the same. I've tested with a different game as well to ensure that the game is ok.

I do have troubles with the unibios to get the hardware test results to show up. Do I need a memory card for that or how can I see the result of the hardware test?

The intresting thing in the new video is one can see some sprite data is being displayed. You can see the inverse NeoGeo logo then its rotating. It kind of suggests sprites are being drawn but all colors are black. Its as if the logic cannot get the color info from palette RAM. I suspect others here can let you know what might be causing that.

Get a diagnostics bios to fully test the RAM.

I have. The Hardware test doesn't shows any issues, the CRC test shows that the ROM banks are not read/identified (not used).

Fatal Fury 2 result: http://www.holgerkrupp.de/geheim/FatalFury2.jpg

Samurai Spirits result: http://www.holgerkrupp.de/geheim/SamuraiSpirt.jpg

I've already started to check all the connections from the game slot to the NEO-C1 and the other chips. All the traces look to be ok.

Currently I'm thinking that the slot might be worn out and not connecting to the games with the right pressure / good connections. So maybe I should replace it as intense cleaning didn't help anything.

If I move the game while the console is turned on, the sprites are appearing but with wrong colors (and by moving it, the color palette is changing).
