I want to expand my collection genre wise, I know there are known best like Pulstar, but what would be the best for only having 1 or 2 shooter games.

For vert: Sonic Wings 3 aka Aero Fighters 3

For hori: Pulstar or Blazing Star

Twinkle Star Sprites is more of a puzzle-versus-shooter, no point comparing it to a typical vertical shmup.
Some of the NG:Dev games (Fast Striker, Last Hope, NeoXYX) are decent, but not worth the high prices imho.

I know TSS is heavy on the puzzle aspects, and was very tempted to put AF3 on there. I just seem to have more fun with TSS, hence my choice. For a more actiony pure feeling game, AF3 is going to work well.

My most played are

Hori: Last Resort, Blazing Star
Vert: Alpha Mission 2, Strikers 1945, and Aerofighters 2

I dont own Pulstar or AF3 yet. I have played a bit of AF3 and its fun if you enjoy the boss battles more than the stages.

the distinct lack of ghost pilots in this thread is about right.

Blazing star and aero fighters 2, same as a lot of the other guy's have said, prehistoric isle 2 is ok and ninja commando is pretty good and play's like a shooter, i'd class it as one.

Horizontal - Blazing Star or Zed Blade (I never gave this one a fair shake till I got the cart and could play it on my cab)
Vertical - Strikers 1945 Plus or Aero Fighters 2

Viewpoint doesn't quite fit into either category, but it's stellar nonetheless. Highly recommended.

Honestly, the Neo Geo (especially MVS) has a great selection of high-quality shoot-em-ups. The only one I wouldn't recommend would be Captain Tomaday.

If you can only get two, then I'd get: Strikers 1945+ and Viewpoint.

If you've got room for a couple of more, then I'd reco: Blazing Star, Last Resort, or Aero Fighters 2.

Strikers 1945 +
Prehistoric Isle II
Captain Tomaday
Twinkle Star Sprites

...get the most play here. I like that Neo has some shooters, but I don't love Neo shooters.

I'd go with Blazing Star, Pulstar or Andro Dunos. For vert, Strikers or Aero Fighters 2 or 3. Zed Blade and Last Resort may also be worth a test on a multicart to see if they fit your taste.
