STG's romanced with other genres more than a few times, there's also an RPG'ish trail present... from turds like Kidou Soukou Dion & Meta-Ph-List, over mediocrity of Earth Defense Force, up to the ingenuity of a Radiant Silvergun and Batsugun. They all use experience points as part of their power up system. They all are nevertheless very enjoyable. Koutetsu Teikoku, Karous & Mars Matrix are other examples of utilising exp.
Then there are Sigma Star Saga and the great Guardian Legend, which took things even further. The latter being an undeniable classic done by one of the most prolific companies in the shmup genre ever, which was Compile. So, concluding this dry enumeration, one could say, that, if anything, it is a love/hate relationship towards RPG's, not hate alone. After all, where would be Einhander, if Square did not exist?

I've always heard of this game but never played it or even looked at gameplay videos until this thread came up. The visuals are stunning for the time and I love what they did with the mode 7 graphics. I'll check it out if I ever see one in the wild.

You know you're a demanding little fuck don't you? Always asking for stuff, "EG don't do this, EG don't do that, EG I had it with you, EG you're a nut, EG stop being so cool..." OK that last one never happens but you ask too much! RPGs suck, I have to stand up for RPG hate, no one else does it, mind as well be me.
Edit: Hey Oli, I don't hate RPG level system, I enjoyed the metroidvania RPG mechanics but I hate RPG gameplay, as in take a turn to "Miss, Defend, Run, Boil some Eggs, Bust-A-Nut, Heal, etc." I find them lame and the stories even lamer...let's get put of bed and save the world but not before I tell you how I got to this town with no recollection of my past and yet I knew somewhere deep inside me that I'm destine to be the doucheest of them all! Douche Panzer!

Honestly, the line scaling effect of the vertical stages (is not mode 7) always gave me nausea... and the round vulcan weapon reminded my a synchronized urine shot.
