As we are now all watching the complete Reversi on fleabay, it got me thinking about how the market has evolved over the last 15 years.

There seem to be a fair few collectors trying to put together a complete collection of UK titles even now.
Shame more don't stop by here to discuss them!

But that aside, what are you guys thoughts on the games?
The must haves, the ones that turned out to be the real rarities, the real players that keep you coming back.

Just some thoughts that have occurred to me.

Remember the alleged fall-out between Sega and SNK that led to Sonic being pulled off of the shelves while the artwork was changed?

Well I've never seen a cover variant! So what was that about?

Who'd have thought that a game like Dive Alert Becky Version, which sat unwanted on the shelves of nearly every Electronics Boutique, MVC, Dixons, Blockbuster and Woolworths, would be made into one of the rarest games by the recall?
Who'd have thought that EB would be taken over by Game who would then go bust and all the other retailers would disappear!

Same goes for Shanghai!

Remember us wondering if there would be any 'Circus Lido' moments for any of the last titles?
A box of Reversi's hiding in some distributors warehouse :(

No proto's of the next batch of games ever came to light.

Besides Reversi, the B/W UK edition of Samurai Shodown. As far as I know it's come up a few times the past four months, but it was more than I was willing to pay for. Besides, the CIB Japanese clamshell is holding me over just fine since it supports English and some color.

I've only got a few of the monochrome titles.
As far as I know, the Japanese and English editions were sold in the UK.
All mine are Japanese editions.
The task I set myself at the time was getting the full UK 39 colour games.
Anything beyond that was just gravy.
I still ended up with about 70!

Hm, I'm not a collector and I only have/want loose carts (don't have the space for the cases and I just want to play the games) but I think KOF R-1 is also pretty rare with english label. Haven't been actively hunting, but if I saw a loose cart I'd pick it up.

As for the must haves, from the games I own: Last Blade, MotM, Cardfighters, Dark Arms and Turf Masters are my absolute favorites. Been playing through them a lot and seem to always come back for more :) The Metal Slugs are OK too, but I've kinda got enough of them somehow. Will have to pick up some more carts, like Cup'98 color plus and Gal's Fighters (damn, I really need Gal's Fighters :D)...

It's a shame that we really didn't have any 'secrets' to discover with the NGPC that weren't found within a farily short time of the SNK withdrawl.

Hi xsq,
Some great choices there :)
I had a phase on cup98! It's a great game. The speech when it shouts the title still brings a big smile now! Great game.

I got lucky with KOF R1 UK English Label, I bought it in a bundle with a Neogeo pocket in the early 2000's. This was when most sellers at the time didn't really post pictures or describe their items very well and buyers took risks when importing them. I'll post some pictures later. I don't want to use my camera phone.

Quick question for everyone. Anyone know where I can find some high quality scans of the box art for Faselei, The Last Blade and Gals Fighters UK? I'd like to print out good copies and insert them in a few extra clamshells I have laying around.

I owned the Pocket on launch, and bought a lot of loose games from the U.S.

But, when I saw the Pocket UK games with snap case, manual, etc.

They looked Awesome!!

I completed the Neo Geo Pocket UK snap case collection in 2008.

I searched forever for Reversi (UK complete), and found a UK shop that had some in stock.
I bought their entire stock of 5, brand new.

The hardest game to find was the B&W version of:

0009 Pocket Tennis B&W English

I found my old pocket wanted thread from 2006.

Almost all the Pocket UK games in my collection were purchased and shipped from the UK.

Same goes for my Neo Geo CD collection.
Most of the rare English games were purchased and shipped from the UK.

I should have been more proactive at the time, I might have had a complete UK collection by now, HAHA.

Any chance you have a scanner 8man? ;)

Has anyone ever tried the Neogeo Pocket Wireless Communication Unit? Found one on ebay for $18 and couldn't pass it up. I need to get my hands on another one, but I'm curious to see how they preform.

Is reversi really that rare ?I mean did it have a very low print run or is it one of those perceived rares / hoarded and sought after titles?

I bought my UK Aqua NGPC new from an indie game shop in the N/W of UK for £59.99, just as they had come out.

UK titles I have owned since 'forever' include:

FF:FContact
KOF:R2
SS2!
MS:1st
SvC:MOTM
PacMan
Puzzle Bobble

I later added:

LBlade
Gals Fighters
MS:2nd

And that's it really. Other titles I'd like to add would be:

KOF:R1 (UK)
SS1! (UK)
Sonic (UK)
Neo TurfMasters (UK)... potentially
Megaman Power Battles (JP)

I'm pretty much done and will probably be looking to relinquish PacMan and Puzzle Bobble. I only keep them *surprise surprise* for if I have issues with the snaplock cases of any of my future purchases.

I did go the clamshell route. I was going to go for mainly the US games, but the cardboard boxes wear down quickly.
The rest of the titles I need are fairly accessible, but I wasn't going to pay ebay prices for all of them.
No reversi but I have Cotton, Evolution, Faselei, Cool boarders etc....

Hi Totoro,

Yes, it's really that rare.

And the reasons are complex and varied.
Basically there were a batch of games that were in the process of being shipped or awaiting release but 'ready' as Aruze pulled the plug on SNK.
Some had been announced for a while and had generated some interest among gamers and retailers.
Others were a bit of a mystery, a total surprise, or didn't happen at all.
And they slipped out in stages!
But basically in the most simplistic terms, the post pull out games are all rare, with the most desired slipping through the recall in the largest numbers as they were the ones that presumably the retailers had pre-ordered the most of.
Of the remainder, they were either shipped in tiny numbers, pre-ordered in small numbers and more likely to be returned when the recall notice went out, or not as relentlessly hunted down by the starving collectors and speculators in the limbo between the pull-out and the destruction of returned games.

So while Fantastic Night Cotton is relatively straightforward to source, being as it is a rather good shooter that was high on people's must-have list as soon as they knew it existed. Not many people were bothering to lose any sleep over finding Pocket Reversi, as it was obviously just a version of Othello, so even when people did hear about it, most didn't give a damn.
Add to that projected sales and size of initial runs.
The bigger runs would be for games like Cotton and Evolution. Games like Reversi would be more a toe in the water release anyway.
Also bear in mind the retailers were 'told' by SNK to return all these games. So If you are a retailer and you've got a customer base who want new games, and you are going to try and hold onto some of the games you've just received, then you send back the ones that are the least commercially viable.

So the whole thing was a huge mess.
It even made some common games that had been previously released rare overnight, as unsold stocks were returned for destruction.

Post Pullout/Cancelled Releases:
Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams.
Neo Baccarat
Cool Boarders
Picture Puzzle
Pocket Reversi
Dynamite Slugger
Evolution
SDC10055.JPG

Here's a cut/n/paste from an old thread where I recall my experience of hunting these games at the time:
"I was in the process of trying to get some POS material from SNK UK, and Exchange a faulty system, when the pull-out, and subsequent closure of SNK-UK, with the ineviatable loss of jobs etc, was announced.
Because of this, I was in contact with a couple of their employees, including the MD's PA. I dont think they had many staff <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">

So, basically, the story, as far as I know is as follows.
SNK/Aruze Japan, basically told SNK-UK, to fold the opperation as quickly as possible. This included, recalling all NGPC Units, and software, cancelling all new releases, and cutting the staff down to a skeleton staff, who could answer any warrantee based enquiries.
Now, what I was told (Which also matched the rumours on the net) was that SNK-JP planned to re-manufacture the recalled units, and software, which I suppose would mean that they could continue production in Japan, with the majority of the costs already covered.
Funnily enough, I have one of the newer type, smaller version NGPC's and the PCB is dated 1999, so who knows?
Anyway, by June of 2000, when the full horror was well known to most SNK fans, I was desperate to get my hands on the up-coming releases (Numbers 33-39 on my list) So I was regularly hassling the companies that I dealt with for any news of them!
The upshot of this was, I got lucky, and managed to find a company that had just received a shipment from SNK-UK that included "Cotton" and "Dynamite Slugger"!!!!!
Now dont forget, by this stage everyone thought these games were not being produced!
But I had a full list of the other titles that should have shipped with them! My supplier said that SNK had asked for the consignment to be returned, so I rang SNK and they denied that the games even existed!!
Well this annoyed me a lot, so I hassled them for a few days, and in one particular phone call, spoke to a guy who was previously involved in shipping <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0"> He not only admitted that the games existed, but told me that an entire shipment had been sent out by mistake to one of their distributors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He wasn't sure of all the titles in that shipment, but he did confirm a few, including the two that I had already got, and Picture Puzzle!
LOL! He also said that they were trying to get those games returned!!! Ha, fuckin, HA!

SO, obviously, once I and I imagine every other fan who had got one of the un-released titles, realised what was happening, we were like a dog with a bone, and started calling every importer/distributor and big independant games shop in the whole country, it was just a matter of time before more titles came to light!
After all, theres no point in denying they exist, when people actually own them!!! <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">
The last hurdle in this race, was that most of these games either did get sent back, or never got any further, than a distributors warehouse in Hong-Kong! Allegedly! I was still looking for Reversi, Evolution, Bacarat, and Cool Boarders!
A couple of the people that I was in contact with, said that they knew the games were there (HK) but that the company wouldn't release them, until SNK gave them permission (But apparently they wouldn't send them back to Japan either!!)
So there was a bit of a stand-Off between the distributor, seeing a golden opertunity to make a huge killing, on sought after titles, and SNK wanting no further part of the European market, and certainly not wanting to honor any more guarantees!
What happened next is anyones guess!
European/US importers were gagging for the unreleased titles and any stray copies of Faselei and MS2 or Last Blade that had been returned.
So suddenly, I get a phone call saying that all the titles I want have materialised. Except for Reversi? Which I didn't even manage to confirm as existing, until some three months later! I guess nobody was jumping through any hoops to get copies of some obscure Othello port, when they could fight over copies of Evolution and Faselei, which were selling for crazy money!"

You're very welcome :)

Reversi counts?
It's all total guesswork.
Remember that Edge magazine made a typically opinionated claim back in the day about potentially there being less than ten copies.
This thread is worth reading:

I'd like to think there are at least 30 or so out there, with 8man likely having the majority of them.

I'm more of a US Collector. Only UK Games I have are Last Blade, Faselei! and Evolution. I only collect what I would play. The only games I'm missing are Bust a Move, Metal Slug 2, and Turfmasters (US Versions).

I'd say more than that.

It's probably impossible to calculate how many complete examples actually exist.
We just don't have the data to start with, so it's all guesswork.
We know that some games like Sonic sold in vast numbers. We know others sold in very small numbers and many were returned for destruction.
I claim that Faselei was a 10,000 run in that old thread. So I must have got that information somewhere. I was a bit obsessed at the time.
If we assume that the titles likely to sell in good numbers, the 'AAA' titles in other words were produced in an initial run of 10,000. Likely reprinted several times for a game like Sonic. Then where does that leave games like Reversi?
Only the very first print exists, likely a small run for a niche game, most were returned for destruction.
We talked about this a lot at the time.
I can't imagine a first run being printed of less than 1000, even for a game like Reversi.
Possibly 2000 or 2500?
5000 would surely be a small figure if we were talking about a game for a mainstream console?
So what do we know?
Very few of us actually have this game as a complete version. It appears very rarely even on fleabay.
But there have always been loose carts available for a few £$!
So I would guess that the initial print was at least 1000.
That said, it shows up so infrequently as a complete UK version that it can't simply be a case of people hoarding them.
So it genuinely looks like there 'were' a fair number but most were returned for destruction.
So how many slipped through?
A hundred? Even a few hundred?
We've seen 14 years of trading of this game. If it was going to have a circus lido moment, it would have been by now.
It's always going to be genuinely very rare in complete form.
If I had to pluck a figure out of the air, I'd guess that there are a few hundred.
Which when you consider that games like Sonic can be counted in the hundred of thousands in terms of sales for the UK and USA combined, then even a few hundred makes this a pretty rare game.

I should have worded it different, I agree that thousands were produced, but speculate only a small percentage were actually completed with manual and clamshell and the majority loose. It certainly explains why a particular ebay seller at one point almost seemed to have a endless supply of Reversi loose carts for sale. Most UK shops likely complied with the order to send back their stock to have them destroyed while a small percentage never did. Those are likely the completed Reversi we see from time to time pop up on ebay and I made the guess of 30, but certainly hope there are more.

It's certainly going to be interesting to see what this one sells for.
If it makes crazy money, then we can test who's sitting on these by how many get listed after this one finishes.

I mentioned in the other thread, but I just recently got into NGPC collecting early this year, and I'm really enjoying it. It's a really underrated system, and this is certainly cheaper than collectiong literally anything else that says "NEO GEO" on it!

I originally set out to find all the fighting games (which I almost have), but now I have a list of games I need to find. I have 14 games so far, with 12 more to find and 4 games on my "maybe" list. Two more fighting games to complete that goal and one rare game to find, Biomotor Unitron. I don't collect boxes, so UK vs US doesn't really matter to me. My collection has a mixture of both, despite them all being bought in the US... I'm not complaining though.

You've made a good choice! The NGPC is a great system :)
WHat games do you have then?

So far I have:
Pac-Man
Metal Slug 1st Mission
Sonic the Hedgehog
Dark Arms
Neo Turf Masters
Baseball Stars Color
Puzzle Link Color
King of fighters R2
SNK Vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium
Samurai Shodown 2
Fatal Fury
Dive Alert (Matt)
Cherry Master Color
Crush Roller (which I feel I over-paid for at $20, but I figured I'd just get it and not worry about it)
Gals Fighter (which I was happy to find loose for $30)
King of Fighters R1 (from Japan)

All in all I've done pretty good, haven't' spent an exorbitant amount since like I mentioned I'm not a box collector.

On my "need to find" list I have:
Last Blade
Samurai Spirits 1 (from Japan, to finish off my fighting game collection)
Puzzle Bobble Mini (or Bust-A-Move Pocket. I have a mixture of Eur and USA games)
Puzzle Link 2
Pocket Tennis Color
Cardfighters clash (SNK)
Metal Slug 2nd Mission
Picture Puzzle
Neo 21
Neo Geo Cup '98 PLUS Color
Mostly common or slightly uncommon games plus one really rare one; an English Biomotor Unitron. That's gonna take me a while to get.

Once I have finished that list, I have a small "maybe" list of games I might try to get:
Puyo Pop (or more likely a Puyo Puyo Tsu from Japan since it's dual language)
Magical Drop Pocket (from Europe)
Pocket Reversi (from Europe)
Delta Warp
