Next MVS shooter I should pick up?

Man, did you hit that up quick!

I was quite happy to have been PM'd by Shadowkn55 about that cart being listed. Apparently he'd PM'd Ash as well to tell him I was looking for it. So yeah, I didn't waste any time sending $ for that. I've seen completed listing on eBay for both higher & lower. It seemed like it was about dead center on eBay pricing the last couple of months. And I was also happy he already had a shock for it, so I didn't have to pick one up for that as I'd just put a shock order in 2 days ago.

You are damn lucky I was at a TSO concert when that cart was listed or I would have snagged it. :lolz:

Good job with the scoop! It's a beautifully difficult game.

:lolz:

I was lucky that I was still awake & got a heads up PM about it from someone. I was only awake still as I was stressed out about a FedEx issue. They'd delivered a very rare/expensive package to a different address and it took me a while to figure out where it'd ended up. I was still wound up from that so couldn't sleep and was just checking some things real quick before crashing for the night.

But I certainly made sure I stayed up long enough to get payment sent off for it. I didn't wanna miss out on that deal!

Now to find a PI2 next...

Basically people are starting to almost naming the whole list of Neo Geo shoot 'em ups... I rather like most of them, don't get me wrong, but there are a few I have to say are not special. For example, Ghost Pilots is rather bland, I fire it up when I am feeling nostalgic, that's about it. I never have played Strikers 1945 Plus on the MVS, but I hear it has some significantly major slowdown issues. I can't really deal with that if it's true. I sold my copy of Shock Troopers 2 for that reason alone.

There's only what, 14 MVS shooters? So yeah, I think every one has been named at least once by someone now.

But this thread has been helpful to me. It's helped me pick up a couple of shooters that hadn't been publicly listed for sale yet. And I picked up BS because of this thread and was happy to get that. I had that towards the bottom of the list before I started this thread as I've usually liked verts better.

It's also helped me to better know what to expect from a game before I've bought it. For example, it was mentioned that the graphics in Strikers sucked ass. And as I was kinda expecting that I wasn't super disappointed in the graphics as I wasn't expecting awesome graphics. Strikers is a more expensive MVS shooter. And I'd imagine that if I hadn't heard some negative things about it from this thread I would have expected more from it especially when the cost of it was added into the mix.

And while I can certainly see where the issues with Strikers come from, they didn't bother me too much as I had a better idea what I was getting when I bought it.

I'm sure eventually I'll end up with all of the MVS shooters. But knowing a little about what to expect & knowing what to prioritize on the want list is what makes this thread quite useful to me.

Pulstar stands out from the rest. It's an absolute masterpiece. A bunch of ex Irem employees finally creating the R-Type they always dreamed of.

It often doesn't get a lot of love because it's an R-type style shmup: slow, meticulous, and requires a lot of memorization. It's tense as hell though, in a great way.

But it's the only shooter on the Neo that truly stands up to the rest of the genre. Pulstar is just as good as the best R-Type or Gradius. IMO it's the best there is in this subgenre.

All other Neo shmups completely pail in comparison to equivalent shmups on other platforms. For example Aero Fighters 2 and 3 are fucking garbage compared to just about anything Psikyo, Toaplan, Raizing, etc made.

Only a matter of time that I get this one! Definitely want to give this one a whirl.

Strikers 1945 Plus is from Psikyo. Does it really stand out?

I have never had any big slowdown issues with Strikers 1945 Plus. It certainly is nothing like Shock Troopers 2. Those reports of slowdown of few and far between, and most people making slowdown claims are judging the game from emulation.

I've never once experienced slowdown in Strikers, even with two players.

I've only played Strikers through the first loop and part way into the second loop. But I don't recall seeing any slowdown. And while slowdown isn't really any fun, I'd not sell a game just for that reason. I've only been gaming since '87. But I've grown up with the tech as it evolved. As such I'm used to slowdown for certain eras of gaming. That's just the way it was.

Probably going to go put my Strikers back in the Omega and get some more time in on it before that holiday ruining shooter shows up... :lolz:

That's encouraging. I want to like the game. But yeah, I don't mind a little slowdown, as Bubba966 said, growing up with the tech I forgive quite a bit, but I tell you what... that Shock Troopers 2 shit is horrible.

Even fixing the slowdown in Shock Troopers 2 wouldn't help that game. It's just not very good compared to the first one.

Would you say Strikers 1945 Plus is the best traditional vert shooter on the Neo then? (not TSS) I am thinking about getting it since people have said the slowdown isn't too bad. That or Sonic Wings 2.

For verts I've only got AF 2 & 3, Ghost Pilots & Strikers. And I do think personally I like Strikers just a little bit more than AF2. Though AF2 & Strikers are certainly my faves out of what I've got so far.

Strikers and Aero Fighters 2 are the only ones I go back to, and I prefer Strikers. More challenging and a bit more going on.

Same here. The game is definitely a watered down version of the original 1945 II, and much easier as well. But it certainly doesn't bring anything original or unique to the Neo that you can't get on JAMMA.

All y'all must be playing a different Strikers than I am cause I still think it's terrible.

If I was a kid and got that for christmas, I would ask to exchange it for the lump of coal.

Well the thing is, I really want to get a vert shooter to play on my cab. I only have one cab (and I'm not getting another one) so.... the options are quite limited. My funds are a little stretched thin at the moment, so this will probably be a Jan or Feb purchase. Sounds like most people are saying Strikers 1945 Plus over Aero Fighters II. I have played them both on emulators, and Strikers seems the better of the two (average) games. I'm gonna hope for snagging the cart at a very low price.

I can see your issues with it. Those issues just don't seem to bother the rest of us so much I guess. I'm just happy I liked it. I'd have not been happy to spend $125 on mine and not like it.

While Strikers I feel to be slightly better than AF2, it is also 2-3X the price of AF2. If the budget is a bit tight you're not gonna go wrong picking AF2 up for $40-$50. I'm sure you'd enjoy it until some later date when you had the $ for Strikers as well...

So, I'm kinda curious why I've not heard much talk about Prehistoric Isle 2? Is it not a title that is owned my many? Currently PI2 is at the top of my MVS shooter want list (though I'd not pass up a Pulstar if I found a deal on one). The very little I've heard mentioned of it has been good. Just wondering about the lack of mention of it is all.

Glad that I picked up a kit with a decent label and all, but it's too bad that the guy had to shut down his store on eBay. I guess that sellers think of Strikers 1945 Plus as a good generic game. Didn't get a chance to play Aero Fighters 2, but it's in the works to get it. Otherwise, I'd have a biased opinion for Strikers.

As for Prehistoric Isle 2, I've thought the same thing too. Maybe it had a little surge of popularity here, and it fizzled out by the time we got it. Overhyped, maybe?

What about the other shooters for that matter? Twinkle Star Sprites is one of the rarer MVS titles, and yet, for it being scooped up pretty fast, there's no praise for it? What's up with that?

I LOVE Prehistoric Isle 2. I would say the game is the 3rd best shooter on the Neo behind Pulstar and Blazing Star. TSS is undeniably great as well. It's just hard to compare to traditional shooters because it's more like a 'puzzle fighter' type of game.

I was going to get a complete TSS on eBAy, and trying to negotiate a more reasonable price for it, but the ass clown of a seller decides to sell the art kit! If he would've went lower, that kit would've been mine! Such a shame too, because it was in pretty damn decent shape! Oh well, now it comes to casually looking!

Also, Pulstar looks like another game that I need to play. Blazing Star is fun, and I want to go through the game in all the ships, so time needs to be cleared out for that!

PI2 kicks ass! Similar mechanics to Blazing Star, with a crazy dino-killing theme.

Last Resort > PI2 in my book, but not by much. I haven't played Pulstar or TSS at all and I just got Blazing Star today.

In PI2, you have the option to switch to a health bar mode in the softdips instead of the traditional set number of lives.
