That's a legit repair isn't it? Just making sure before I buy this, thanks in advance.

In general, the boards look legit. The NGH# on the TOSHIBA chips are #087. (n1.) And, the Board numbers are PROGSS3 and CHA256. (n2.)

But, in specific, I've never seen color bands positioned outward towards the edge of the board before. (n3.) I've always seen the color bands positioned inwards towards the center of the bard. (n4, n5, n6, n7, n8.)

So, when in doubt, it's best look at the soldering. (n9.) Do you have a pics of the backside of the boards?

Yeah I went ahead and passed on it. What also didn't make sense is EP 3, 4 being MX chips. I'm told it was an original cart, repair, and then modded.

... What also didn't make sense is EP 3, 4 being MX chips. ....

The "MX" label on the ROM means nothing, Macronix makes a shitton of ROMs for tons of people. (n1.)

On the mvs-scans page, I found an MX labeled PROM on a King of Fighters '96 (repair) and a Real Bout Fatal Fury.

But, an "MX" label on a F(lash)Rom means something. ;)

Legit boards....

To me, that looks odd--like someone put a few Roms on the board in opposite directions.

Reminds me of a beer bottle with the label on upside down. :eek_2:

It's a legit cart like mentioned above. Anytime you see an PROG-SS3 board it will always have eproms on it, they later opted to use the PROG-BK1. I think the PROG-SS3 was an experimental board.

That's legit, I've got one as well. If you download the MAME Sam Sho 3 rom (set 1), that's actually that version. Set 2 is simply the two program roms from the BK1 version.

Mine also has the paint marker lines on the chips. I'd definitely try to track down a BK1 version, as it's easier to add smkdan's bug fix program roms to it.

I'm not too comfortable with board work, but I managed to do the swap fairly easily and with clean results.

Cool, the position of the color bands is not a problem. :)

Ok, I have a SSIII (but I rarely play it) so I have to ask: What's the benefit of smkdan's bug fix?

IIRC the collision detection and damage were modified.

Correct, he fixed the hit detection and added a menu for a damage modifier, he also has a version without the menu with just the fixed hit detection.

OK, it's legit... good to know.
It's mine and I'm keeping it for my collection. I've have not done much research to checking which ones of my carts were boots till just recently.

I went ahead and sold MP this one instead.

OK, and that's the last time I place these boards on carpet... however my carpet doesn't seem to build up much static at home.

Definately original. I have a Waku Waku 7 cart with also has one MX eprom rom on it, with the remainder being correctly numbered mask roms. It's the carts that have all MX mask roms on it which you have to watch out for - like yaton specials or K7 bootlegs.

Totally legit. Those colored marks frequently appear on eproms from the manufacturer.
