Update:

The official name of Cave's new STG is Akai Katana.

According to Cave's website, there will be a location test at HEY Arcade in Akihabara July 23-26. The release will be sometime in August.

New Cave shooter announced with limited details. No artwork or anything else just yet, but I'm sure we'll see some eye candy quite soon. Judging the description, it kinda reminds me of Progear.

Thanks to EOJ from Cave-stg.com for the details and link.

-Danmaku type horizontal scrolling shooting game
-Hardcore military shooter
-Each ship has a pair of characters (pilot and gunner?) with specific attacks
-Each ship changes its attacks when you change "mode"
-The characters (enemies, allies, and others - all human) are quite diverse
-Ships are designed as hardcore, 1950s style retro mechas
-Game is designed around destructible objects and dodging bullets - the core elements of an enjoyable STG - rather than obstacles and topography. This gives it a refreshing feeling.
-It has been carefully developed for over 1 year.
-Release in summer/fall 2010

All of Yagawa's games under Cave bombed. Cave won't let him do any more. They still keep him around to do arrange modes for the ports, so at least he still has a job.

:spock:

Thats because they are fanboys who can't understand decent games and just want really light gameplay and basic scoring systems.

I'll raise my hand as a Garegga hater too. Maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time seeing the bullets in that game sometimes...

Unfortunately for Yagawa fans, those types of people make up the majority of shoot'em up players. It's hard to make money by catering exclusively to a niche within another niche.

Excuse me?

Are you....being sarcastic?
Not at all. I'm not a big Ibara fan either. Easily my least favorite Cave game. It's alright, just nothing extraordinary. I don't hate Yagawa's games, they're just not for me.

I know what you mean. I thought the same thing when I first played it.

So you make an account with the user name of a Yagawa game you have never played

I don't think the new game will be directed by Yagawa. Now that Cave had such a (comparatively) huge success with Death Smiles, why should they go back and risk another Pink Sweets/Muchimuchi Pork desaster? Those games were so quickly abandoned by the game centers, I have happy to even see a MMP cab half a year after the release.

I like the older Yagawa games though. Garegga is a master piece, shooting and scoreplaying at its best. Batrider is just the same and equally awesome, but I don't like all those Mahou Daisakusen boss enemies.

I think we all know it won't be a Yagawa game, but I can dream. Cave needs variety. I don't want them to get too comfortable and keep releasing the same game over and over.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've always favored the aestetics and presentation of Yagawa games 10x over most Cave games, Donpachi, Dangun and Guwange aside.

Most Cave titles appeal to me strictly on a gameplay level while the visuals are something I tend to 'deal' with. Although not a Cave game, Air Gallet is everything I like/want/need in a shooter. From the sound of it, this new title sounds very promising.

I'm a sucker for "grit" in my shooters I guess.

I liked the name, couldn't think of anything else at the time of joining, and was watching a lot of replays of PinkSweets at the time. Therefore, PinkSweets was used.

By the looks of it, I think it would be my favorite Yagawa game. Possibly the only one I would really enjoy playing. Fantastic music, level design, characters, and gameplay...Judging from what I've seen.

Alright, enough talk about Shinobu Yagawa! This sounds like it might a sequel to Progear or something totally new!

I'd love to see a modern hardware w/no suicide battery Progear style game. Hopefully they use old school 2-D sprites and this will be something I'll surely enjoy.

While Horiz are not my cup of tea usually, i'm up for something new. Plus, there is always the *chance* of it being a good fit for my play tastes, and for this i'm excited. I'm jazzed for every other reason listed in your post good sir:). I also would love to see crazy parallax along with 2D sprites. It's been along time since Air Gallet knocked my socks off. . .looking forward to this.
