Why does the past of this forum feel so shady?

While the history of this message board owes a lot to things like DHP/onelist (oh!)/Yahoo Groups, the history of the NG community as a whole runs MUCH deeper.

All the real action started over half a decade prior to the aforementioned channels, on usenet. An active community with plenty of knowledgeable individuals. This is where a very elite, not to mention secretive, group of individuals that were dedicated to collecting Neo Geo home carts formed, the "Neo Geo Illuminati" for lack of better term. Their history was pretty innocent until about 1995 at which point they abandoned usenet in favor of moving underground. From that point forward they used their numbers and consolidated wealth to influence the home market is every way imaginable. You want _shady_? Here's a nice example: In 2003 they decided to horde every available english AES Sengoku 3.. See many of those these days do we? Most people still haven't figured out how valuable this game truly is now. What used to be one of the most common games is now one of the rarest. The word "ironic" comes to mind.

I've really said too much though, that example is a MINOR footnote in what they've done. The bread crumb trail is fragmented, but does still exist if you know how to look for it. Though you should prepare, this is one rabbit hole that looks almost inviting.. It's quite the opposite.

Yeesh, and I thought Chris and Dion were bad (from what I've heard). >_>

man I'm tellin you guys I coulda sworn people used the term AES back in at least the mid-90s, before Dakis and Ray

Ignore them, NGF didn't popularize OR invent the term AES. What you are seeing are just bitter remains of the "I LOVE to hate everything NGF!" relationship soo many of the oldest members here have.

You're paranoid and/or stoned, and I want a Sengoku 2001.

Its called "Blind Fury" and it was heavy on these boards back in the day due to the tireless efforts of a very small minority. The manipulation has been monumental over the years, but yea, the history is epic, and different from many points of view.

I used to have a US Neo Geo home system, and a sticker on the bottom of the console said "NEO-GEO-AES" right on it (the sticker is not present on the JP version).

Therefore, the NGF guys couldn't've invented it, and I blow my nose at all the elitists who seem to think "AES" is some kind of evil term.

Ya know, I couldn't figure out why some people never used AES, that's the proper term. Home console is alright but AES is by SNK, same with MVS and everyone uses that term. >_>

really, who gives a shit? those who still play neo crap have moved on to mvs carts and cabs/consolized systems. I haven't touched the console in about 4 years.

Its on the box and dont let anybody tell you otherwise, NGH pah!!!!

i foudn the whole NGF clan quite funny, people like leslie wouldn't have a bad word said against them

1 thing that wasnt mentioned is that apparently the big tymers had some sort of loyalty card which they got stamped after every big purchase and if they bought 10 carts they got some sort of key-chain or something

I've been here for some of the biggest scams (Kyokugen star) and during the whole NGF getting sued 'years', they are, they arnt, SNK love us, SNK hate us etc etc

i would like to say however that i dont mind Chris Ray, i spoke to him a few times years ago via pm and bought some 'non-tainted' items and he seems really nice, for me the crook was always Dakis, but that didnt bother me as much as the treatment he gave Mr Jigen - that was disgraceful

Sure there was something else where NGF supplied shawn with thousands of dollars worth of carts and basically ripped him off

The neogeo cd has 'advanced entertainment system' written on it.

AES is not written on the CD or CDZ box, but its on the cartridge box

there is no NGH however written on the CD, CDZ or Cartridge system

but its written on the AES cart and CD boxes, the plot thickens :)

but i suppose we could call it the NEO GEO HAS (Home arcade system) as thats on the box

but then again it does say on the back of the AES carts that

NEO GEO AES cart said:
This major meg cartridge is for use on the Neo Geo Advanced Entertainment System.

Are you guys really wanting to have this ridiculous AES argument? That is a real tired one. Just search eBay and see what most sellers are calling it. Hint: It's AES.

In other news: Agreed with Broon. I've never been bothered in the least by Chris and even recently had a bought from him and all was smooth through and through, a bit sad that the OP here specifically calls out Chris over Dion. I'd add both Chris and, yes, even Dion deserve a certain amount of respect that so few people here are willing to give them for fear of backlash or ridicule. They _should_ absolutely be given respect for being two of the biggest collectors in this hobby. These guys know more about about SNK products than most of the people on this board combined, and, on top of that, achieved a relationship with SNK that few people would even dare to friggin' DREAM of.

You can argue all you want about "freaked games" and things that happened over the years, but in the end everyone should be able agree this community as a whole wouldn't be the same without NGF. This little scene of ours has an extremely rich history, and they played a pivotal role in it. It makes for one hell of a story, unfortunately not enough people have their hearsay-bullshit filters set high enough to even begin to see it at this point.

This stuff could make a documentary that could put King of Kong to shame, and I am 110% serious. Someone should really start looking in to this..

That actually might be pretty entertaining, I wonder why people still hold secrets even though it's been like, 6 years since those days.

BTW, I assumed both Chris and Dion were about equal in terms of damage causes so I used the name referenced to first. Sorry 'bout that, didn't know. :(

... You assface Dion! :lolz:

AES is fucking NOT the "correct term".

Homecart system, MVS and NGCD, that's it.

"AES" is for n00bs. :smirk:

Tak

why is MVS, MVS? and not arcade system

so you can have AES, MVS and CD

OR

Home arcade system, Arcade Sytem and NGCD

Infact Tak on the back of the Homecart system box it clearly states Home Arcade System, so it seems the homecart system is still a little incorrect

Its like the littlest Hobo, maybe tomorrow we will find out, until tomorrow Home arcade system is the best shout

"Advanced Entertainment System" is just a subtitle which is present on all manifestations of SNK's Neo Geo, it's not a name for a particular version. A NGCD is an advanced entertainment system, just like the arcade- and home systems. It's not totally off to call these machines advanced entertainment systems, just like it's not totally off to call a Ford a Ford... it's also not totally incorrect to call a NES or SNES "Nintendo", like many people did back in the 80s and 90s, but it's still not the real name of the machine.

It's because of the friggin' SNES why "AES" became so widely used - people in the US where used to the "entertainment system" crap.

"MVS" and the logo however were heavily used in SNK's ad campaign aimed at arcade ops, so yeah, I think it's the official term. The "multi video" approach was new at that time so SNK did their best to make it known under its proper name.

Tak is spot on!

Look, when you went into a small video game store in the 90s and happened to see a Neo Geo you went "Wow, a Neo Geo!" You would ask the Captron/G&Gs or K-Marts, "Hey, do you have a Neo Geo to display?" You would tell your friends, "Man, check out the new Neo Geo review in EGM!"

You would NOT say, "Hey, what a great Neo Geo AES system!"

Then, when the CD system came out and nobody even knew what the hell it was because the N64 and PSX had the market Mookielocked, you would ask the import retailer, "Any new releases for the Neo Geo CD system? Oh, and BTW, any chance of a used Neo Geo home cart system in the back?"

Sincerely,

Mikhail

SNK tried to make the NGCD an affordable replacement for the AES, hence the usage of the subtitle. I don't recall "Advanced Entertainment System" being used in any of SNK's MVS advertisements. If it's correct to call an NES or SNES a "Nintendo", then it's correct to call the AES or MVS an "SNK".

It's because of the friggin' SNES why "AES" became so widely used - people in the US where used to the "entertainment system" crap.

I don't think so, Advanced Entertainment System was part of the NEO-GEO name on the early AES boxes.

Same with NES and SNES, most people called them "Nintendo" or "Super Nintendo". It's not unheard of to use simpler spoken terms through word of mouth. If we went by your terminology, it would be incorrect to refer to the NES and SNES and (Super) Nintendo Entertainment Systems.

I don't think so, Advanced Entertainment System was part of the NEO-GEO name on the early AES boxes.

Because SNK used to release ports on NES. I think they wanted the association with NES but also to distinguish it as a more advanced system.

I've always referred to it as NGH, or Neo Geo Home system.

I can't believe we're having this discussion again.
