The Void.
I expected more from it, but still liked it well enough. It opens intriguing enough and builds some decent atmosphere, but the 2nd half just isn't as strong.

The Purge, Election Night.
First one I see in this series, not bad. It's well made and fairly tense all the way through. I hear the second is the best one, so I will definitely look for that one next.

I saw Thor Ragnarok finally the other day. I know I say it every time but I think I may finally be done with the Marvel movies. I keep threatening to not go to them anymore but they keep pulling me back in with amusing casting/production choices (like having Jeff Goldblum play himself with silly makeup on or having Mark Mothersbaugh do the soundtrack). They all feel the same. The main character does their best Robert Downey Jr. impression (and most of the lesser characters do lesser versions of said impression), they make endless self-references (to pop culture, to comics, to previous movies, to future movies) and there's a couple of scenes of big CGI destruction porn and then a half dozen post credit sequences to set up more movies.

There's nothing really wrong with them. This movie, like the rest of them, was perfectly pleasant and inoffensive. The soundtrack was pretty great. It just all feels like empty calories. Like a Saturday morning cartoon with a $200 million dollar budget. While I know there's nothing inherently wrong with that idea, it becomes a burden if that's seemingly the only worthwhile thing showing up in movie theaters. Superhero movies just need to go away for like 10 years so the template for them isn't quite so painfully obvious as it is when there are 3 or 4 coming out per year.

I keep thinking about this movie even a week later. I am just amazed at how much creative control Marvel gave to a guy from New Zealand on a nearly 200 million dollar movie. From that opening scene with Thor swinging around in a chain which felt really, really not Thor-ish I knew this was going to be a weird ride. I saw zero trailers/advertisements before so I went in blind.

The craziest thing is what a positive reception it got. Of course it killed at the box office, over 700 mil, but critically it appears that it was lauded. Baffling. It's terrible, but at least a terrible that I feel the need to watch again.

I'm disappointed Hulk didn't have a harem though.

Election Night is the worst of the three. First two are both pretty good, very different from each other and both are good at what they set out to do. I'd say start at the original then watch the second one.

I finally watched Atomic Blond. The soundtrack alone made many of the scenes better than they would have been otherwise, and the style was through the roof, but wow the story was awful. Convoluted doesn't do it justice. Theron and McAvoy were both great but seriously the story is just ridiculous, even for the genre.

Justice league.

5/10.

Lotta missed opportunities, terrible cgi (the moustache fiasco) and a forgettable villain. Not as shitty as Suicide Squad, but not as good as Wonder Woman.

I liked Man of Steel, and rather enjoyed BvS' directors cut. But this was a misstep. Also cyborg looked like tinfoil shit.

They shouldn't have fast tracked this film. I'm a bigger fan of the JLA over the Avengers so it kinda sucked to see my favorite team in such a shitty presentation.

Fire and Ice is great. I recommend it to anyone who hadn't seen it. Heavy Metal is also worth watching. Bakshi was basically a 13 year old boy in adult physical form.

Saw Loving Vincent on Friday. Uniquely animated with a simple but intriguing story that incorporates van Gogh's portrait models and tells the story of his last days.

Watched Atomic Blonde over the holiday weekend.

It was fun if nothing particularly special. Was hoping for Lady Wick (including all of the weirdness of those movies' world) but got more Lady Bourne (military/spy espionage "who do you trust" bullshit). Apparently it's based off of a graphic novel... because everything is at this point.

That said, Charlize Theron is still a smoke show and there's some serious brutality in a couple of the fight scenes.

My wife and I raided Barnes and Noble for the Criterion Collection sale and we had a blast watching some stuff. A lot of it was stuff that I saw and she watched for the first time like Sanjuro and Tokyo Drifter (recommended).

Also, she bought a collection of films from Julien Duvivier. Saw one film from the 30s, Un carnet de bal, and it was spectacular. France really was ahead of its time for film.

Killing Ground - the Aussies do a nice job with their psycho backwoods killer stories. Had a few echoes of Wolf Creek and the sequel, but smaller scale. Effective, pretty good.

47 Meters Deep - dumb, but harmless. Not memorable but enjoyable enough. The ending is pretty good.

Sleepless - terrible plot, generally not very good, but Scoot McNairy livens up the scenes he's in.

Short Circuit: Complaints about that guy who plays the dude with the Indian accent, being "whitewashed" obviously never watched this movie. I get the complaint because he is a whitey who plays an Indian... but this is actually brought up in the movie itself. Maybe people who rant about this can't afford a VCR.

Donnie Darko is a nostalgic classic! The soundtrack alone makes that film.

I watched The Void and really enjoyed it. Gory, existential, flesh fest! I would've liked more in terms of "why", but it was the atmosphere and horror that makes the movie. I loved the nod to Fulci's The Beyond at the end.

Yeah I know that the Jamie Foxx version is generally considered a butchery of the original, was just in the mood for some brainless action.

I'll check out the original one of these days to cleanse the palate with something good.

Kong: Skull Island- Honestly better than it has any right to be. Not that it's great or anything but it is visually creative and I enjoyed the early 70s/end of Vietnam setting. Still full of bad jokes and cliche. SLJ and his whole crusade was BS, should have killed him off earlier instead of John Goodman. Also another victim of pop music soundtrackism, you gotta let the music work and use it sparingly don't just cram shit in there because you can.

Autopsy of Jane Doe- Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Some great effects in the actual autopsy scenes, suspense and sense of claustrophobia were adequate. A bit predictable about a third of the way in but still wanted to see how it played out.

Hopscotch (1980) - The best James Bond parody I've seen yet. No tired satire, no slapstick, nothing but a drop of dawdling -- or rather, just a delusion of dawdling. All the elements are there: the supercar that throws oil on the driveway, the remote controlled superplane that ensures the escape, the supervillain that's just a tad bit short, the clever and sexy girls, the pivotal doberman and the insight that everything costs money. Brilliant!

Could be time for a "fixed" version of Justice League just like they did with Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad.

Suicide Squad doesn't really get much better but the Ultimate Cut of BvS is really leagues better. They cut out super important plot details just to fit the movie into the IMAX runtime.

Justice League can't have benefited from having two directors. Snyder's kid died and they brought in Joss Whedon to finish it like 80% of the way through the movie, and he apparently completely changed the tone.

Hopefully Aquaman is as good as Wonder Woman.

I don’t know anyone who was passionately into Aquaman.

In order of coolness
Batman
Superman/Flash (personally dislike Superman)
Green Lantern
Wonder Woman (for lack of anything better)

And like aquaman I guess.

Not the best portfolio of IP.
