I watched the Albert Finney Version last night... Unsure if the new one is better told... but my view is that the 1974 version is almost perfect in it's story telling of the classic Agatha Christie book...

I enjoy that version but David Suchet is Poirot and any adaptation without him just leaves me wanting. It also bugs me when he's not with Hastings. He needs a counterpoint.

Watched LIFE this weekend.
It legitimately freaked me out, like no other movie has in at least a decade. It's reminiscent of Alien in how it builds tension & terror using a sci-fi theme. What makes it so suspenseful (to me) is how it takes place on the ISS and how everything that happens is slightly more believable than a typical sci-fi movie that would usually take place in the future, with tech that is more fantasy than reality. That, and the alien in question is intelligent enough to be scary. Good shit.

Watch Life last night. You have united nation of scientist/astronauts continuously do stupid things to further the story. Maybe Calvin would have figured a way to kill them some other way but instead he kills them because of their fuck up. Its like they kept underestimating him till the very end. There was no suspense when the alien is way smarter & seem indestructible...It was like Jason or Freddy movie without one smart or lucky character to fight it.

agreed. It became more and more ridiculous every time someone did something idiotic to advance the plot.
I can see how this movie could be good if you are not paying attention to the dumb/smart people.

The David Suchet Version has a different tone to it... It's all about the ambiguities of Justice and how as Poirot is getting older he finds it harder to hold onto his clearly defined sense of Justice.

It has a darker tone than the Albert Finney one... but both are very good...

As for Hastings... if you read the books... Hastings, Inspector Jap and Miss Lemon are only in like 6-8 books. For the TV series they included them in a LOT of episodes... which doesn't adhere to the original books.

I agree that it would've been nice to have them through it all... but in terms of accuracy towwards the end of the TV adaptations... I suppose it may have been too much to ask for...

Sidney Lumet delivered, I still get shivers when thinking back how the kidnapping was depicted. The all-star cast is splendid, too. BTW, just noticed it's Poirot ;).

Why Him? - Pretty good laughs at the beginning but you get used to the vulgarity and gets less funny.

Wind River - Guy wrote Sicario & Hell or High Water, so was looking forward to watching this one. Didn't disappoint...really liked it.

Mother(korean) - Another mystery murder & this too was really good. You really feel for the mothers love for her child...With the police not helping, she goes out to prove his mentally challenge sons innocence.

No way. Wind River was complete garbage. Horrible writing. No character development. Completely misused Jon Bernthal, who could have had a great role. Jeremy Renner came off as wooden. An American Clive Owen, struggling to express emotion.

Trainspotting 2- I kept my expectations in check for this and it ended up being pretty much what I thought it would be. A worthy but not amazing sequel, maintained the dark humor for the most part and it was good to see everyone back. Plus they all looked pretty appropriate for their age/past 20 years of abuse. The only thing that really bugged me was some of the camera work. That still and shift to another angle just came off as awkward and was too frequent.

I think my favorite scene was Mark and Simon just getting blasted on coke in Simons flat while Veronica watched them.

I watched the RLM review, think that's all I need to see.

Cabin In The Woods- Not my first time seeing it. Always enjoyable. If you haven't seen it and enjoy Dale and Tucker or Drag Me to Hell you should give it a watch.

In the past year, I liked Get Out, The Lobster, It Comes At Night.

Historically, my favorite movies of all time include The Fall (2006), Leon, Let the Right One In, Donnie Darko, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and True Romance. I have soft spots for Robert Rodriguez, Gary Oldman, and Jodie Foster. I really enjoyed The Green Mile, Dead Zone, and Shawshank. Generally anything related to Stephen King will be well written. And ultimately, every good movie must also be well written, with good characters, development, foundation laying, and a climax. Most of the movies of the 1980s, for me, were great because they played to the conventional storytelling rules, and ultimately, gave a complete story.

To put Wind River in context, it was third worst movie I have seen in a theater. Number 1 was Maggie. Number 2 was Instinct.

That low? Wind River wasn't that bad, actually its pretty awesome. It was a great end to Sheridan's modern western trilogy. i probably relate more to this story then his previous two, as i used to work at indian reservation casino. The movie has a really amazing cinematography. The mood was also terrific with displaying the beautiful yet very bleak lonely land of the reservation. Not sure what was the problem with the characters, Renner, the normal Olsen girl, & the supporting cast did good...the climax was fast & hit hard...Finished it off with a powerful ending.

Wheelman -For a movie so short, it seem to drag for the longest time. Daughter was really annoying & we never get to see the guy on the other line or what his motives were. It was like Baby Driver w/ Phone Booth but not as fun as those two.

This is a weird movie to put up but here it goes....I finally saw Cool Runnings for the hell of it and despite it not being very truthful to the source material, it was actually nice. RIP John Candy.

So it's all about the writing for you... Fair enough. That's a good reason all it seems I ever see ya say about things are that they're shit. I used to by more annoyed by shit writing/etc but found that I was picking things apart too much and never was enjoying anything. And as I love watching movies that sucked to be annoyed at or damn near hate most everything. So I tried to stop picking shit apart so hard and just sit back, relax, & enjoy the show. And for the most part it's worked...

And for me Get Out and It Comes at Night got talked up too much and I was rather pissed by them. Missed The Lobster, gotta fix that as it sounded quite interesting. And I quite enjoy the rest of your mentions, esp Leon (proper version of course, none of that 'The Professional' shit). Introduced a friend to Leon once. Afterwards she was in tears and said that Leon was now her favorite movie of all time, and she never wanted to see it again. At that instant it sounded like a bit of an odd reaction, but made sense after letting it soak in as there's a few scenes in that movie that get to you.

Either Wind River pushed your buttons in a terribly wrong way or you don't watch movies in theaters. Sure, wasn't the greatest movie. But 3rd worst hardly.

Which version did you see?

The horribly overrated version?

I really can't tell you...I saw it on one of the Direct TV movie channels years ago. I remember thinking that I didn't see what they hype was about.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, different strokes for different folks. I think There will be Blood is one of the greatest films of all time...others can't sit through the entire film due to boredom. It is what it is.

The soundtrack was changed a bit through different revisions of the movie. If the high school scene opens to Tears for Fears, then you’re in the right one.

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. I saw it for the first time this year and felt like I wanted to watch it again right away.

I was in Jamaica a few years back and the guy who drove the white guilt bus (the one that takes you from the airport to whatever resort you're staying at) kept pointing out places where they had filmed scenes from Cool Runnings. It struck me as odd the first couple of times until I realized, duhh, that's probably one of the only movies filmed in Jamaica that white people know about.

I saw Thor Ragnarok finally the other day. I know I say it every time but I think I may finally be done with the Marvel movies. I keep threatening to not go to them anymore but they keep pulling me back in with amusing casting/production choices (like having Jeff Goldblum play himself with silly makeup on or having Mark Mothersbaugh do the soundtrack). They all feel the same. The main character does their best Robert Downey Jr. impression (and most of the lesser characters do lesser versions of said impression), they make endless self-references (to pop culture, to comics, to previous movies, to future movies) and there's a couple of scenes of big CGI destruction porn and then a half dozen post credit sequences to set up more movies.

There's nothing really wrong with them. This movie, like the rest of them, was perfectly pleasant and inoffensive. The soundtrack was pretty great. It just all feels like empty calories. Like a Saturday morning cartoon with a $200 million dollar budget. While I know there's nothing inherently wrong with that idea, it becomes a burden if that's seemingly the only worthwhile thing showing up in movie theaters. Superhero movies just need to go away for like 10 years so the template for them isn't quite so painfully obvious as it is when there are 3 or 4 coming out per year.

What? A comic movie with pop culture and comic book references?
Well I'll be damned.
