Board games are cool, especially the games you find at hobby shops. I use to own a lot of board games but got out of playing them once I had kids. Now, I am pretty much just in to video games but there are some great board games out there if you look.

One of my auctions just got kicked off eBay because it's ethnically "offensive."

Never mind that it pokes fun at almost EVERY race out there. I'm not a big monopoly fan, but playing this one was at least one of those "oh no they didn't" moments. Great story about it on Wikipedia.

Lots of people think of them as bored games. However, when you have a family get together that drags on, classics like Clue, Trivial Pursuit, and 20 Questions can make for a great escape.

Sincerely,

Mikhail

Thats cool. I love board games, and I used to play Pencil and Paper games when I was in highschool too. Just ust about any other Palladium books were awesome, and if you had RIFTS, it made them all even better. My favorite boardgame is probably Risk, I only have the standard variant though. I really wanna get the one that is from like 2589 or something. Its got the moon, and other planets or something as territories. Very cool. I had never played Catan, and I tried it on XBL. I only had the demo, and I didn't have time to really get into it but it was pretty cool from what I did play. I also got the demo for Caracasson or something. Its a very simple game, but with people on xbl it can be fun.

have you ever played games like Munchkin, or Hacker by Steve Jackson Games? Munchkin is pretty cool as it pokes fun at regular pencil and paper RPGs and its card-based. I recently started playing Munchkin and Hacker with some friends of mine and they are pretty fun.. Grab a 12 pack of beer and some snacks with those games and you're in for a night of laughs.

between me and my friends we probably have about 6-8 heroscape master sets. then i think weve got 4 lava expansions, the ice expansion, multiple trees/paths, and two castles.

we tend to buy more terrain than figures.:emb:

the whole deal with heroscape is its "the battle of all time" which is cool and all but it doesnt work when the scenery is pretty much all medieval.

sir denrik and the knights of weston ftw.:buttrock:

one time we built a replica of elwynn forest from warcraft and played out a modified version of that table top rpg they played in the yugioh manga. :emb: :emb: :emb:

The worst part of Monopoly is the fact that 90% of the population doesn't really know ANY OF THE FUCKING RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

never mind house rules, motherfuckers wanna start a fight with me cuz I tell them you have to auction a house if somebody lands on it and doesn't want to buy it. Or they try to put a fucking hotel on Boardwalk and no Houses on Fuckin Park Place...

Yeah, that's never a problem with Ghettopoly. You have to be drunk or high to really appreciate it so in that case the rules just cease to exist...

My collection - there are quite a few missing, notably A Victory Lost that I've been playing quite a bit

Quality stuff in that collection there. I see several games that I want/have been curious about playing.

I still need to pick up A Victory Lost. I wish MMP would release the rules (doubtful) because I'd really like to read them. Still the price on the game is so cheap (compared to some of my recent acquisitions) that I should just buy it.

Bonaparte at Marengo is another game I hear great things about, but i've yet to really look into it.

I'm not too keen on early 19th century warfare (Napoleonic stuff really) which is probably why. I also have no games about the American Civil War now that I think about it.

Heres my BGG collection:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewco...ncludetags=&search=&minyear=&maxyear=&B1=Load

How do you like Imperial? I really like the idea of an economics type game sort of posing as a WW1 game. I've read the rules and it seems like something I and my friends would enjoy.

I'm really tempted to buy Heroscape Marvel and then get the Heroscape master set again, and then i'd take the Captain America unit and the Airborne Elite (WW2 Paratroopers) squad and have them be on the same team. WW2 Cap squad for the win! They could even fight Red Skull! Now if only Red Skull had some minions...

I hear once you get 2 (or more) Master Sets then the terrain stuff you can do is amazing. Undoubtedly the best part of the game is the terrain. I still regret selling my copy of that damned game, especially now that actually cool units are out like all the Samurai, Ninjas, Greeks/Romans/Gladiators, and Zombies.

Hahaha, so true man. I'm convinced like all of maybe 4 people have ever actually sat down and read the rules to Monopoly (or most of the other well known, now property of Hasbro titles). I really hate the house rule where free parking gives you money.

Monopoly is pretty looked down on by people at Board Game Geek, and while there are a lot of other games i'd rather play than monopoly, I'm not so elitist that I wont play it. I really don't care for the roll dice and then move mechanic, it's a bit too random for my taste. I want to get a few more games dealing with economics/finance though.

I haven't played Carcassone myself, but i'd like too and I think I might just buy it some point later down the road. I'm trying to broaden my collection a bit and get some games that don't deal exclusively with combat/fighting (I really need more of what are termed "Euro" games in 'teh Geek Vernacular).

From what I understand the Risk 2210 edition IS the best version of Risk available. There is an overall turn limit, which prevents the game from dragging on endlessly, plus some new mechanics like cards and commanders make for more strategic and tactical options then just massing troops and rolling dice.

What's really badass about the game is that they released some tournament/convention only exclusive expansions that allowed you to fight on Mars, and I think Mars' moons. There may have been some other planets available but i'm not sure. If you look hard enough you can find the maps online (you'd have to print them yourself obviously) or if you have the cash you might be able to get them on ebay, though they fetch a high price (from what i understand)

Yeah, I've played Munchkin once. It was humorous at the time, especially because it's just a silly D&D/Fantasy/RPG spoof. Seemed definitely best with some beer.

Steve Jackson games put out a cool Chess variant called Proteus that I want to buy. It can be had for $10-15.

Last time I tried playing Monopoly, my friends pooled their resources together just to defeat me. :crying:

I've always been sort of interested in some of the Cheap Ass games products, but their website hasn't been updated in a year so I don't even know if they're still in business.

What I really want to find is a good zombie game.

Because everyone either loves zombies or wants to bash their heads in.

My friends attends the University of Arkansas, and apparently there are a bunch of communists/marxists down there (humorous, given the fact that Sam Walton/Wal-mart dumps tons of money into several of that schools departments). So my friend has made friend with some of these marxist/communist guys and gals down in Arkansas.

Anyway, to make a long story short my friend told me one time how he played a game of monopoly with these communists. He said it was pretty much the worst thing ever. They all pooled their money against him, donated money to other communists player when they were about to go bankrupt, etc! LOLZ though.

I've only ever played one Zombie game, called Zombies!!! It's kind of light and quirky. Best played with beers in hand. I wouldn't call it bad, but i wouldn't call it great either. I'd have to do some looking to see if there are any other better Zombie board games out there.

I hear good things about Samurai Swords (AKA Shogun). It's part of the Milton Bradley Gamemaster Series (IIRC) and it's often compared to Risk, but is supposedly better.

Invite some friends over (supply some beer) and let the battles in feudal japan begin!
You know i have that board game still heck i didn't know it was worth any thing :tickled:

I bought the game in late, 80's or early 90's from a TRU it caught my eye since it had a samurai theme to it.

Still it does remind me of risk.. but instead taking place in feudal jpn like you mention.

It's been long time since i play it to i know... i have it packed away some where.

Btw it has the name shogun on it i got mine "befor the name change happen.

Haha, That is funny...

Imagine playing with Anarchists..... That would be even funnier.

I played a lot of monopoly as a Kid (8-12) with my cousins........

I only really learned all of the proper rules because I had the PC version when I was like 12....

Same goes for RISK... I could never figure it out on my own..... But with the PC... I could have a good time...

Imperial has always dragged on to the point of excruciating boredom, not to mention there is a strategy of non-involvement (never owning a controlling share but heavily investing in the winning countries) that seems to be the best route, but only one player can do it. to be honest we only played it three times.

I can't pour enough praise on A Victory Lost - the game is fairly even and very tense, but the sides are completely different (Germans have low numbers but high power, vs Russians with weak units and massive numbers). If I knew how to work Vassal I'd offer you a game, but I never got into it :conf:

Bonaparte at Marengo is hardly a wargame, when you play it seems more like an abstract than anything else. That said it's a great game and has that really cool "look" to it.

The good thing about monopoly is that you can sometimes talk 3-4 shmucks into playing a game with you....

Try to get them to play anything more complicated and you are S-O-L. Unless you want to play with the geeks that hang out at the game store..... But those fat slobs will eat all the chips, spill soda all over the place and spread their funk all over your house.

Hmmm I might stay away from Imperial then, there are other economics themed games out there.

I honestly don't know why I dont have A Victory Lost.

A sequel of sorts is supposed to be in the works I believe.

I've messed around with VASL (the ASL equivalent of VASSAL) but i've never bothered to learn how to use it. I think i've tried play some stuff on VASSAL a long time ago too, but I can't recall. Either way I've never played a game over either. I imagine the games would be sort of lame without voice chat (I don't have a mic and i'm not familiar with any voip programs)

Your comments about BaM echo what i've read about it. I want to play it someday, not sure if it's worth owning though. I'd like to go to a board game convention or maybe even hit up a gaming store that isnt full of magic/warhammer/ccgs/clix minis sometime.

Yep, everyone knows how to play Monopoly, Checkers, Connect 4, etc...

I really do enjoy Scrabble, personally - though I oddly don't care for Upwords.

My favorite game dealing with economics (albeit i've only played a few) is Railroad Tycoon. The thing is the game is way more fun, still about gathering the most cash, and is simpler than monopoly. There are many games out there that are simpler and better than what is available on the shelf at Wal-Mart.

YEah, I would like to play stuff like that... But I can just see my friends roll thier eyes when you get something like that out.......

Also, Checkers is obsolete.... Some scientists have "Matrixed" the game.... The best you can hope for is a tie. I am sure that the same applies for connect 4.

My friends enjoy Dominoes..... The one with the 9 dots....

For those interested there is a guy out on the interweb named Scott Nicholson, he hosts a video blog of sorts that reviews and discusses boardgames.

You can check out this site at:

http://www.boardgameswithscott.com

He is kind of goofy, but I enjoy his segments. The quality of his early videos are decent, but his newer stuff is way better, especially with regard to sound.

He has a "Boardgame 101" episode for those new to hobby boardgaming:

http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?p=5

A lot of his videos are up on Youtube, though most episodes are reviews of specific games.

Yeah, many games that do not feature any sort of random variable have been "solved." On Japanese design (from Bandai, actually IIRC) was solved by a supercomputer and it was found out that the player who went second could never lose.

I could see how one could always play to a draw in stuff like checkers, chess, connect 4, and of course the old favorite: Tic-Tac-Toe.

Of the more "traditional" games I wish I played more chess. I'm just too intimidated by the game really, since it almost is a lifestyle game.

Anyone ever play the asian game Go?

It has several other names I believe. They play Go in the film a Beautiful Mind. It's an abstract strategy game that is often compared to Chess.

If they were true communists then they should know that all property belongs to the bank. :shame:

I really do need to find a good game to play with friends. We tried Monopoly like I said, and Life, but they're both sort of old hat.

Usually what we end up doing is playing Uno for shots (losers take shots) or push (a card game) for...shots. (Although we once tried it with the Harry Potter jelly beans. Worst flavor I got was earwax.)

It would probably be best if the game was somewhat simple (less time explaining rules) but sort of quirky and interesting enough to convince people to play it.

You could always try Apples to Apples.

It's a fun little party game, especially when everyone is drinking. It's just a word association/trying to guess what your friends are thinking type of game.

There are a lot of simple games out there, but I don't really know of a lot of quirky stuff, since i'm a lame-o and like tried and true stuff like WW2, civilization building, and Railroading.

While I own a lot of board games, mainly common games, I use to buy a lot of strategy board games from hobby stores. I will check to see if I still have any of them and list some names if I do.

Not the type of games you all are talking about but I thought this thread could use a little gay. This is the last game I purchased. It is suppose to be a Super Mario Jenga type game. I have yet to figure it out.
