It's a toss between RBFF2 and Special, 2 has two new characters!

Well, this is just my opinion, but I highly recommend getting the very first Real Bout, then buying the rest in chronological order later on.

This way, you get to see the progress the series has made over the years, and not be disappointed by the precursors. Plus I like the cover artwork of the first Real Bout the best out of all three, it'll look really cool in your collection. mr_t
I'm just a Fatal Fury fan, so I say get em' all eventually!

Some info about the first Real Bout:

There are only 4-5 stages in all, but each one(except the last) has ring outs. Its the only one that has it of all the Fatal Fury games, and its pretty humorous. There are also 3 planes of movement, but you can only fight on the main one.

I believe it has the smallest cast of the Real Bouts. You don't have Krauser or Xiangfei or Rick to choose from, but there's still plenty to keep you busy, trust me.

The controls of all the Real Bouts is unique from the other fighting games, it is A=punch, B=kick, C=hard attack(either punch or kick), and D=line sway, to move between the back and foregrounds. The button scheme is simple, and very responsive.

However the combo system is great, with easy to use linking combos to specials and DMs, and it is easy to get into very quickly.

Plus the first one follows an ongoing storyline, like Real Bout 2. The "Specials" in Fatal Fury are like dreammatchs, they don't have a contributing story.

The downsides I found were: over-powered cheap bosses(but then again this is common), the line-swaying can be used to disadvantage, because you can't do anything in either back or fore, so you're left helpless to enemy attacks.

But whatever choice you make, you really can't go wrong with these great classic SNK games...

If you just want one, play them all, make your own opinions, then keep what you like and sell/trade the ones you don't. That way, no regrets for not playing the others.

RBFFS was my favourite. Although I find myself playing RB2 more these days.

RBFFS had 2 planes, you could fight in both planes. It had the best linesway combos of all 3 games because of this and arguably the best linesway system of all 3 games.

It has some awesome pre-fight animations, some of which can only be seen in 2 player mode - same applies to win poses.

Out of bounds is no longer available but the breakable barriers are still present. If you break the barriers this time around your opponent will go dizzy for a couple of seconds.

Probably the only thing I didn't like was that some characters S.Powers and P.Powers weren't all that different - Joe and Andy for example.

I'd recommend getting them all eventually. But if you are only looking for 1 then I'd get RBFFS.

absolute prefight animation ever is when Blue Mary faces off against Geese in the nightmarematch in RBFFS.

Hands down - no other scene in any other game comes close.

I also recommend buying them in chronological order. It's what i did (i had the PSX real bout 1 first (uh...bad port) then got the saturn 'best collection'. I now have RB and RBS on NeoCD and am waiting for the RB2 CD version.

Real Bout Fatal Fury is like an Enhanced Fatal Fury 3. Most of the sprites are the same size and a very similar Soundtrack is used. This is also the only game to feature the ring outs, and will bring a smile to your face withall the great animations if you pull them off (including a nude version of blue mary, even though the nipple bandit had his way with her wink )

It has the P and S Power meters which were also new after FF3. The backgrounds are very ncie and the final battle with Geese is very memorable, and so are the end credits for each character.

The character roster is:

Terry and
Andy Bogard
Kim Kaphwan
Duck King
Joe Higashi
Mai Shiranui
Sokaku Mochizuki
Bob Wilson
Blue Mary
Franco Bash
Ryuji Yamazaki
Hon Fu
Chonshu and Chonrei
Billy Kane
Geese

Real Bout Special:

RBS is one of the very best Neo fighters IMO. The first thing that hits you when you play this is the Sprite Size, which is bigger than the previous Real Bout. There are also loads more animations, Just see the new Power Geyser and Pheonix Flatterner for example! Also some characters have been Redrawn (Bash looks a lot better now, same goes for Hon Fu wwho has a gerat new standing pose). Some of the characters have secret EX Versions, and although they are pallet swaps SNK was not so lazy and produced differing Win / Character select art for them. Backgrounds on the whole are very good though some are very empty which is my only complaint. The ring-outs are gone, though i think every stage has something either side to keep pummeling your opponent into, eventually they break and get an instant dizzy.

The final fight with Krauser is also very well one and atmospheric, his sprite his huge and very well animated, and the background is very dynamic. If you've though well enough, after beating him you go to a very cool fight with Nightmare Geese, which is as good as it sounds.

The updates to the Real Bout character roster is:

Wolfgang Krauser (returns from FF2)
Tung Fu Rue (Returns from FF1/Special)
Laurence Blood (FF2)
Cheng Shenzan (FF2)
Nightmare Geese (Just a more badass version of a badass.)

Real Bout 2:

Some see this Real Bout as a dissapointment compared to Special. While Special offers many new updates, RB2 tends to take a step back. There are no Ring-Outs, and no Items to smash your opponent through on the corner of the stages. There are no Win Quotes (not in 1p any way), or Stage Introductions. However, it offers 2 new characters, the brillaint Rick Strowd, who i use almost exclusively in the game, and Li Xiangfei; typical annoying little girl character who can also be found in KOF 99 and 2001.

Backgrounds are much better than in RBS i have to say. They are less empty and are colored beautifully. They variate slightly depending on which character you fighting. (like the previous RB games, stages are shared, each fighter does not have an individual stage). Also, on some stages you can kick your opponent into an object in the background, for example on Yamazaki and Cheng's stage their is a neon light, you can kick your opponent into this for some extra damage. Their is a car on Xiangfei's and Hon's stage which is similar.

<img src="http://www.gamegen.com/fightgen/games/rbff2-s2.gif" alt=" - " />

(Yamazaki and ChenZan stage)
Real Bout 2 also has IMO the best versions of Kim and Terry in the series. You'll know when you get round to using them, especially if your an avid player of both. There are some picture-based endings to go for, and another new character to unlock- Alfred. Geese and Krauser return as the bosses, though sadly Nightmare Geese has departed.

Character roster is the same as RBS, + Rick and Xiangfei, - 'EX' versions and Nightmare Geese.

I would personally leave them and go straight to Mark of the Wolves, but if I was to choose from them it would be RBS everytime!

Yeah, looks like Geese doesnt like dogs...

Anyway, the best one is Real Bout 1. The strongest version of Terry and Andy ever. The best gameplay also. RB2 looks like a rushed game in every aspect, i mean, it tries to be Real Bout 1, but with 2 planes and weak DM´s and SDM´s. Look what they have done to Sokaku, to Hon Fu, to Chonrei, etc.

RB1 had that dark atmosphere, like a real illegal fighting tournamen. It had so many easter eggs, like throwing the character over the hanging dolls in the National Park stage. RB2 had crap BG

I think RB is the most fun of the series. I'd recommend buying it first.

RB2 actually has all the chars in the entire RB roster...but the 1P can be a little monotonous, as others have said, with the removal of win quotes and poses. (I still wonder why they did that...) I enjoy it, personally, and recommend it as well.

RBS is my least favorite of the series...I don't hate it, I don't love it, but I like it. I find it boring at times, but then again, there is the EX characters, Nightmare Geese, and a few more extras.

So, in conclusion, buy all of 'em.

Depends on what you're looking for...

For pure arcade goodness, get RB2. IMO, it has the most refined combo engine of all 3, and I also feel the graphics and animation are the best here as well. However, there's no real story (if you care about things like that), and no pre/post fight interactions between the characters except in 2-player mode.

RBS is also an awesome choice, and is more suited to one-player fighting. The engine is good, if a little too heavy on the "high hit combo" syndrome, although I do find that the multi-plane combos are a little too generic between the characters here. Still a fun game though, with great control, awesome graphics and plenty of that traditional Fatal Fury humor.

The original Real Bout is okay, but the graphics are actually worse than FF3, and I feel that the computer AI can be a little cheap at times. Also, the lack of backgrounds hurts, and I personally don't care for the ring-outs found in the title (although it was a neat idea putting them into a 2D game).

While I personally prefer RB2, I'd say you really can't go wrong between that and Special.

he is right
i dont hate rb2
hell,i love each and every GD game
and nowadays, with stuff like rotd and kof 2002 around
how can you HATE rb2?
i wrote utter shit because i couldnt be arsed
and didnt want to spend time explaining properly what i really wanted to say
but rb2 really disappointed me at the time
because i was expecting so much more
and i really dislike how some sprites look like SHIT compared to the new ones
example
geese vs rick
i mean,come on
geese was better animated in fatal fury 3
lame endings as usual
and alfred???!
never seen such a silly "secret" character

its not a shit game

but the worst RB in my opinion

thats all

If MOTW counts, I choose that, if not choose I Special. Special has Nightmare Geese, 2 has Rick(useless to me) and Xiang Fei(play KOF instead).
