My pics:

Gynoug (for nostalgia and killer music)
Hellfire (as above)
TF3 (sooo much better than 4 imo, and music tracks from heaven; water stage :D
Gleylancer ( versatile weapon system, technically excellent for 16-bit era)

There are so many others to choose from, you're spoilt for choice with MD/Genesis shooters.

Hmm, I thought I posted in this thread already.

Anyways, Truxton is the only Genesis game you will ever need.

My fave MD shmups are -

ThunderForce IV
Vapor Trail
Gynoug
Fire Shark
Gleylancer
Sol-Deace
Gaiares

...and some decent arcade ports like Twin Cobra, Truxton, Slap Fight, Raiden Trad or Hellfire. Most people say that the PCE would be the #1 shmup system of that time but for me it's the MD.

Wow I have a lot of games to check out. I usually try teh romz, and if I like the game i'll buy the cartridge.

I just tried Truxton, and I just bought myself a copy on the 'bay :glee:

You know I had a copy of Twin Cobra and didn't even know it :glee: .

That has to be the earliest Genesis game i've seen, but it's definitely fun.

I've always wondered how different this was from Sol-Feace.

Wolf Team rocked it back in the day.

There aren't many differences, the CD version has some pretty story anims/pics between rounds, that's about it. Sound is better on CD, of course but gameplay is the same.

Totally love Gynoug
Thunder Force is amazing
Just recently got Gleylancer, I can easily say it's worth the money.

I wouldn't disagree with any other recommendation here.

I've also a soft spot for the MD version of Forgotten Worlds, PCE was closer to the Arcade but I love MD music!

V-V

I think VV/Grindstormer is the greatest shooter of its generation. Manic, individual stage practice and tough as hell. Way ahead of its time imho.

Undead Line is another one that I love.

i have been a mega drive fan since they were first released and have owned/played most shooters at some point (my first console was a jp mega drive with golden axe, back in 1991!) and the best MD shooters are (imo) :

Hellfire
Gynoug
Tatsujin/Truxton
Thunderforce 3/4

and now for the more Expensive ones :
Eliminate Down
Slap Fight

it has to be said that the bottom 2 more pricey ones are in no way better than the ones above, so go for those first.

M.U.S.H.A. is worth to check out.

I really suck at shumups, but I always enjoyed playing this particular title.
It has very solid game play.

So close, I was nearly the first to remark on Toaplan's Slap Fight.

Pardon the price, it's an excellent package with a conversion from the 1986 coin-op and a brand new Slap Fight MD version included. Not the best game, but it's certainly fun.

V-V/Grind Stormer is another Toaplan game. The V-V mode is my preferred choice, but the best part is that this game has both versions selectable, making the often cheaper domestic the one to go for.

Fire Shark, Undeadline, and Twin Hawk are also worthy mentions as I own them.
GleyLancer is a really nice horizontal on the system too, just a bit pricey at times.

so many great titles mentioned already - but I'm surprised no one has said anything about Forgotten Worlds. Sure, maybe not a traditional shooter in the sense of Musha or Thunderforce....but still a great shooter, right?

I still play it all the time :)

edit: whoops - just saw some folks had in fact mentioned it :D
