Ok one question!:shame: Why doesn't anybody ever notice that the Mad Max series is a complete rip off of HOKUTO NO KEN. Hell the frist Mad Max and the Fist of North Star movie even end the same way!

2) Did he ever get his woman back in the story.

It's kinda sad that so many people hate FONS, especially since they are basing it off the streamline and mangay dubbed crap. About 8 years ago, I saw the dub of the movie and thought it was the worst movie I had ever seen. But going back to it in Japanese after watching the TV series, I loved it. It's a retelling of the first story arc of the TV series and doesn't make a whole lot of sense if you've never seen the TV show or read the manga. Much like CLAMP's X the Movie, actually. FONS does get repetitive in that in pretty much every episode, Kenshirou goes to a town being oppressive by gang members and then makes their heads explode, but overall I found the series enjoyable. While the second arc of FONS 2 kinda lame with the rehashed villain, it at least offered some change from the stock formula. The violence level in the movie (and now, the new FONS OVAs) is really toned up - you can see the little pieces of brain matter and gore.

"Bart" and "Julia" ARE the names for the characters. BAATO (that's a long-a sound in Japanese) is how you say "Bart" in Japanese. If his name was "Bat" it would be BATTO. The name "Julian" is said YURIAN, so I am guessing YULIA/Julia works the same way, as it's the female form of the name.

New FONS is 3 episodes. It is a sequel to the TV series. ADV just announced they had bought them for American DVD distribution.

The HK bootlegs do not have top notch audio and video quality. 9 episodes per disc (which are uncut) lead to some severe artifacting problems in every second of the series. The subtitles start off as marginally readable yet obviously ESOL, and by episode 16 they dissolve into complete Engrish to the point of the show making as much sense with the subtitles off as with them on. Also, the flashback sequence of Shin stealing Julia (ep 4, I think) is ruined because of a pressing or authoring error, so you don't see much of that scene; the DVD skips. The Movie DVD is a boot of the LD with some very amusing flaws in the left side of the picture. Also, one boot is of the actual LD; the other is a boot of the Streamline dub and a Chinese-subbed only boot of the movie.

MASSIVE, HUGE SPOILER

To answer the last question, Kenshirou does get back together with Julia, but she eventually dies of radiation poisoning.

i also hate manga dvds for the most part, they ALWAYS cut the opening and endings and replace them (songs too), they did the same thing to street fighter v tv series.
Which really is a shame, as SFIIV had some really good OP/ED theme songs -- one of the few things the series had going for itself, IMO.

the raijin manga is top notch i just hope they finish the us release, if i remember the fotns manga is 28 books long. i have 1-4 of fotns, i need to buy the others.
28 vols. can be a bit daunting, especially for a relative newcomer to the U.S. like Raijin, but as long as the title has enough fan support in the form of sales, I can see Raijin sticking it out to the end. I was running my Japanese DVD of Shin Hokuto no Ken ep1 in my booth at Otakon last summer, and talked to a lot of FOTNS fans -- I was surprised how many of the fans were in the younger (17-20) age range (I think I was expecting the FOTNS fans on the whole to be older, probably just due to the age of the original manga & anime series).

Mad Max and The Road Warrior were released in 1979 and 1981. Perhaps one of the other folks in this thread can provide us with the original Japanese publication date for chapter 1 of the FOTNS manga, but I believe Mad Max predates it (possibly The Road Warrior predates FOTNS, too?). I think MM & TRW influenced FOTNS, not the other way 'round.

Also, is there a good Fist of the North star site somewhere?
I thought these two sites were pretty decent:
Hokuto Renki Touza
Hokuto no Ken Homepage!

Actually, Bat's name is written バット "batto" in Japanese (whereas my Japanese DVDs of "The Simpsons" indicate that Bart's name is spelled バート "baato"). While I will agree that some languages (especially German) pronounce the letter "J" with a "Y" sound (witness Juli and Juni [pronounced "yuuri" and "yuuni") in Street Fighter ZERO 3), I don't think interpreting FOTNS' ユリア Yuria as "Julia" is a good interpretation (and the translators of FOTNS' English editions at Raijin seem to agree). And the Japanese don't always pronounce Julian as "yurian" -- Julian Sands name, for example, is rendered as ジュリアン・サンズ "jurian sanzu."

Thanks very much, btw, for the detailed info regarding the poor quality of the FOTNS bootleg DVDs. Every HK bootleg DVD I've ever seen has been terrible, in exactly the ways you described, but I've never seen the FOTNS boots, so I couldn't say myself what specific problems they have. Thanks again for the much-needed info -- you've probably saved at least one or two people here the expense of buying alot of trashy knockoffs.:buttrock:

fotns tv series started in 1984, and the movie was in 1986, i dont know when the manga started but i doubt it was before 1982, the first 2 mad max films had already come out.

Hm. I will have to go back and research the Bart/Bat thing. It could very well be that I am misrembering the katakana for his name in FONS. I'll post once I confirm.

You're right, about the J and Y variation. If the non-Japanese person is supposed to be from a Germanic language, the "Yu" would become "Ju" in English. I don't know if there's any basis of the preffered romanization of the woman in FONS. It would be useful if someone had official artbooks with her background and personal data, or if someone could ask the mangaka themselves how they would prefer it. It is kinda weird though, FONS seems to be taking place in North America, but we have this Yulia/Julia person hanging out with men who I think are indeed supposed to be Japanese martial artists like Shin, Kenshirou, Toki, Raou...
