I went to the local Red Cross blood donation center today for my regular once every 2 month blood donation appointment. Everything seemed to be absolutely routine --- read the packet, read the poster, answer the questions, get finger pricked to check for iron content --- until I arrived at the step where I sign my name on the agreement form. I am always asked at my appointments to confirm that the name, social security number, and address are mine, so when my eyes picked up something different in the field for ethnicity, I demurred:
"Why is the field for ethnicity filled out with 'Not Hispanic/Latino'?"
"Oh, in our systems, we actually have the ethnicity choice of 'Asian,' --- you are Asian right?" I nod. "At the end of filling out the form, there is a choice of 'Not Hispanic/Latino' that we have to check or leave unchecked."
"Why does that even matter for blood donation?"
"I don't know."
Whyyyyyyyyyy?
To avoid INS beating down my door and deporting my ass? Is the government on the hunt for La Qaeda?

). It's how you carry "your self" (two words felt appropriate here).
