KOM_eiffelyte_FAB.jpg

The sculpting project I'm currently working on is a King of The Monsters 2 play set. My original intent was to make at least two monsters from the game, a destructible city environment, and some of the small vehicles the pitiful humans pilot, but I might take the lazier route and just do one monster (of course, that would kind of kill the whole "Monster King" thing if you don't have another monster to fight--but then, I can easily pit Eiffelyte against one of my other figures). Eiffelyte is getting pretty close to done--I still need to add the worms/tendrils sticking out of his arms/legs/chest. I'm also debating whether or not I want to have some kind of alternate/switchable streched-out arms/legs. The figure is just mocked-up at this point--the figure hasn't been glued together yet, the parts are just sitting in their sockets, so to speak. He stands roughly 2.5 inches tall and has 19 points of articulation. I'll probably start on some buildings/human vehicles after I finish him up.

Here's some of the ideas I've been bouncing around in my head for this project:

- Rather than using an area from the King of Monsters games, change the city setting to South Town with Geese Tower, Pao Pao Cafe, etc. as destroyable buildings. Alternatively, create a "Neo Geo City" with buildings/structures from various SNK games.

- Replace the King of Monsters human-controlled vehicles (i.e., tanks, helicopters, jets, etc.) with Metal Slug vehicles.

And, no, I'm not making Atomic Guy (I don't like him--giant human superheroes shouldn't be in a monster-dedicated game), so don't ask. Beetle Master, Clawhead, Neo Geon, and Cyber Woo are the current frontrunners in the rigged election going on inside my head.

Well, I'm finished with this KOM2 project, having dialed down the scope quite a bit from my original vision. I lost interest/motivation along the way, so I'm calling it quits with just Eiffelyte and a helicopter. I gave the city play set a try, but it just ain't happening. My photobucket account isn’t cooperating with me, so you’ll have to visit the link for photos:

Can you post a pic of your entire figure set?

That's awesome. I loved the pic of Eiffelyte dropkicking Rugal.

Such a shame you didn't make the whole city though.

Thanks for the comments!

Rade: Sorry, no. I’d have to round up over 200 figures to do that, and they’re scattered all over the place/in storage—that’d be a major undertaking just to set up. Every now and then I do a group photo of figures that share a common theme/game, but that’s about it for group photos.

Qube: I’m not going to do anything more with this piece. I never go back to work on an older project other than to touch up/correct paint or fix them if they happen to get broken—it’s one of my taboos, if you will. I might make some other King of The Monsters figures at some later date, but they’d be new projects, not a continuation of this one.

Holy cow, that's awesome! I had no idea people were designing action figures in this forum.

Let me know more about that playset when you're done.

Anyone done Beetle Mania, yet?

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'd understand it a tad bit more had FTL said this, as he never ventures outside his worthless forum, but for an Admin to say this is downright shameful.

Bobak: "Holy shit guys, there's a "General Discussion" forum for the Neo-Geo, did you know about this? Wow."

Bobak: Unfortunately, the play set is a no-go, I found making a bunch of tiny buildings was supreme anti-fun (there's a photo of the start I made on them farther down the web page link I gave earlier if you're interested in seeing how far I got before I called it quits). A small display stand, with just a few buildings, probably would have been a more realistic goal to set for myself.

Beetle Mania is a possible contender for sculpting someday--I think he had the best design of the KOM1 monsters, I found the rest to be fairly mediocre (I do kind of like the rock golem dude too though). While he's from a completely different game, I've thought about making the beetle guy Sisyphus from the Megadrive/Genesis version of TMNT: Tournament Fighters recently as well.

I applaud your hard work and nice choice of a character to use. I also checked out your site and I'd like to offer some input.

I would do less pieces and focus more time into each of them to get them 100% right. You've got good raw abilities and great ideas, but I think you could make professional results if you pushed yourself harder; focusing on anatomy, poses, and execution.

Look at Spawn toys.. see that level of care and detail? I could actually see this character in a SNK capsule toy set being sold in Japan.. I just think if you're going to put in the time to do this, might as well try to use for a portfolio and try to get work. Why not send pics to Toynami, Spawn, etc. The may not like KOM, but they may like your skills.

Again, I really like what you've done, and I hope you'll keep going with this.

I agree that my sculptures could benefit from me putting more time into them, and that I still have much to learn in terms of anatomy, proportions, etc. Part of the problem, besides lack of skill, is that I'm a very impatient person. The longer a piece takes, the more frustrated/bored/angry I become with it. Good or bad, I do tend to fall into the quantity over quality persona.

To get a job sculpting in the toy industry, you have to be able to work in the mediums they use, which are primarily wax and clay, neither of which I use. I can work in clay, but wax is a very different beast. Beyond that, I don't feel my sculpting skills are good enough to work at McFarlane Toys, NECA, Hasbro, Mattel, or whomever, at this point. Also, one has to consider that, when you work for a toy company, you have to make what they want, not what you want, so one could easily envision a scenario where you spend months crafting objects/characters you dislike.

Do it. Do it and I'll love you forever.

How about you elaborate and give some sort of justification to support your statement, other than proclaiming that his work "sucks" without anything to base your statement on?

How bout no...

sucks.
