Can't let this die off.

Just checked PinballNews.com and they have a 10 minute play through of the new Indiana Jones Pinball Machine from Stern.

http://www.pinballnews.com/games/indianajones/index6.html

They said the machine's software is still in early development, and it'll change before the game's released. The announcer sounds like Warf from Star Trek, I guess they were going for John Rhys-Davies's character since they probably can't get Harrison Ford to do it.

I LOVE the Raiders of the Lost Ark 8 Ball Multiball. I can see the machine getting hammered, but hopefully the few places I know get the machine and it'll be worth it.

Damn that machine looks lots of fun. I can't wait to give that table a try. On the much more retro side of things, I picked up my first pinbal machine for only $100. It's on old but good shape Williams Big Ben EM pinball. Built in 1975. I've been spending most of my weekend learning this table and pinball in general. I already had to fix the flippers since one of the wires came loose. So far so good. I'm learning to love this niche hobby and one day I will get another table or two.

Well, I think I found Mecca for pinball players. Right after I posted the link about the new Indy game, I found a group called PAPA that has a huge tournament once a year in Pennsylvania.

www.papa.org

and

http://pinballnews.com/shows/papa10/index.html

This event used to be at Broadway Arcade in New York City and when it went the way of the dinosaur, they went to Pennsylvania.

The place only opens ONCE a year for the tournament and people from around the world come to play. There's three main tournament divisions as well as ones for kids, seniors and special tournaments like "One Handed Challenge" and the "Tommy Challenge"

I'm REALLY thinking of going to this place for my summer vacation, I want to see just how low I rank among the best in the world. Plus the guy has machines I've never seen before.

(Let me know if I should make a thread in Neo Gatherings about this, I'm sure there's a lot of east cost guys like myself that would want to go.

I just recently got bit by the pinball bug. I loved them growing up, and now I'm dying to own one myself. Although as others have said, the high cost does not make it appealing. I might drop by a local distributor/reseller and see if they have anything for a good price.

Holy shit, Tommy Challenge? Like, play the pin blindfolded? I don't know how that can be exactly pulled off, maybe in the musical Tommy it worked, but that's fiction matey.

I would love to participate in a pinball tournament, but I'm not sure there are many training grounds around central and southern Jersey anymore :(

There wasn't a pinball machine based on Tommy, were at a certain challenge something comes up to obstruct your vision of the paddles?

Yeah, there was that, it was kind of an amusing diversion, a fan basically came up to totally block your flippers, so you had to be very good at trapping balls when that came up.

Wizard!

Probably not a full license, but the closest you can get.

Edit: Data East made a Tommy pin for the Broadway production in 1994.

I don't see 8 balls in play when multiball kicks in for that table. My cutoff limit for multiball is 6, i.e. Twilight Zone's Lost in the Zone, and even that is pushing it. It's virtually impossible to trap balls, but then, with 45 seconds on the clock, that's probably not the idea anyway. In that mode alone one can rack up enough points to get that Free Play, if one hasn't already achieved that by clearing all the bonus modes.

Actually the "real" Tommy pinball is this one. Like I really know that, lol. :lolz:

From IPDB:

'Buckaroo' was the game played by Elton John's character in the classic pinball-themed 1975 film and rock opera 'Tommy' (aka: "Tommy by 'The Who' ").

They did "Tommy Mode" on Revenge from Mars, here's what they said on PinNews.

Tommy Mode required the use of extra-sensory skill as the flipper area of a Revenge From Mars machine was covered, denying the player the chance to see the ball or the flippers.

And look at the scores!!

Tommy Mode Tournament
Expert Division winner - Darren Kamnitzer (115,083,600)
Novice Division winner - Patrick Newhart (101,392,740)

I don't think I could score 100,000,000 with my eyes open!

The Data East Who's Tommy machine was fucking awesome. Not only did it play all of the music from the musical (WAY better then the shitty movie) but it had a mode called "See Me" where it looks like a fan with two eyes comes out and blocks the flippers so you can't see.

Flipper_Blinders.gif

I've only gotten the mode once when I played it and it was awesome.

I think I agree with your cut off limit for Multiball, Bok. I THOUGHT the 13 Ball Multiball in Apollo 13 would be awesome, well it's not. It just looks like something vomits pinballs at you and it doesn't even last 20 seconds. There's no way in hell to keep them in play with just two flippers.

Yeah, after I was reminded of the Tommy blinders, I understood what the Tommy Challenge may entail. I do like the thought of that. I'm horribly out of practice nowdays, but after playing a few balls on a pin, I and I'm sure most experienced pinball players start channeling the Tommy in him by syncing breathing or heart beats with the ball's inertia.

If I had 4k right now I'd buy Simpsons Pinball Party. That shit looks god damn amazing.

That pin didn't match the one I remembered from seeing in the college center, and after some research, I found out that The Simpsons had been licensed more than once as the theme of a pinball table.

It look like fairly standard fare, so my recommendation is to play the table at least a few times to see it in action before jumping in with a purchase. Sometimes there is an enjoyment gap between seeing the action and controlling the action. Playfield could look great but the gameplay end up being bland and uninspiring. I might get jumped for saying this, but I was not a huge fan of Attack from Mars.

I took Tak's advice and picked up a copy of Pure Pinball. Got it for $5 at a local game shop.

Best five bucks I've spent in a long time. The physics felt pretty good and the game ran at a zippy pace. I played it for a good hour or so. If you see the game in town, pick it up.

BTW: Only downfall is the cover is a bit pervtastic.

LoL, good old Xs Games.

You have to love their cover for Mobile Light Force:

Cool, didn't know that game was worth checking out. I saw the box art and snickered at it, but I knew it was from XS so I knew the box art was going to be corny.

My friend went and picked up Pinball Hall of Fame The Williams Collection and he's been loving it. I'm trying to save a couple of bucks and trying to get it at Target without any luck.

He's told me he's unlocked the wizard mode and was beating the hell out of some of the games and has really been enjoying it.

I showed him the website for the pinball tournament and we all want to enter, I just hope it doesn't get too expensive trying to enter all of the wacky tournaments.

For Bok. Depending on where you are in Jersey, there's a couple of good places, if you need to find any place to play pinball, check out this site. If a place has it in the tri-state area, they might have it listed.

What is the consensus on Space Invaders?

I am thinking about making an offer on one.

It's a cool looking table. The play field is wide so it "feels" slow, but I really enjoy that table. I'm telling you the Space Invader sound effect plus the HR Giger-esque art work is epic.

Hey Dino. I was reading your blog about the pinball tournament with all of the rude players.

Well, I got my own story to add to it.

When my friends and I went to the FunSpot tournament they had picked six tables to put in their tournament. On the first day it was alright, not too crowded. You waited your turn, went up and played and had a score keeper jot your score down on a pad.

But throughout the weekend, it got really crowded and a bunch of fat old guys came and were just lumbering around the pinball area. And I'll tell ya, I've never met a bigger group of schmucks.

I would walk up to a machine, put my token in and start playing, not even 45 second later I'd have one of them standing behind me, breathing down my neck. Then when I'd ignore them and keep playing I'd get "HEY! Ya done yet?! Hey! Let somebody else play!!"

So I'd go away, then they'd hog the machine for half an hour... Then to make it worse, they'd curse like truck drivers (In front of children) when the game wasn't going their way and would beat the shit out of the machines. They even gave the techs a hard time because some of the machines weren't working well.

If there's going to be people like that at the PAPA tournament, I'm going to end up mule kicking some of them in the nuts.

So it is wider huh?

Don't think that that will workin my my apt..... Narrow doorways and shit.... Less space...

Also, If I had my own pin... I'd run multiball all the time...

Anybody got a Cocktail pin?
