This is completely surreal and I still dont believe it. They all but HAVE to stop these "death" storylines now. And I swear that if WWE creative thinks its cute to pull a spirit of Benoit angle like they did with Eddie then they have lost ALL of my respect.

I believe they are. After how abysmal the whole Eddie's death storyline went, I don't think the creative staff is going to shoot themselves in the foot again. Either way, this sucks big time.

He took Benoit's place at Vengaence and the storyline was to have him the ECW champion, the one title that elluded Chris.

Still, the WWE could've book Elija Burke or The Alpha Male instead. Nitro was the one most likely available in a short time to come to the PPV and wrestle CM Punk for the title...in any event, my belief was the idea of CM Punk to lose in his first title chance and make him either more determined to get another title shot or to make him a heel against Benoit.

In any event, we're stuck with loser Nitro for now :oh_no:

Punk makes mark in wild night of ECW action
By Corey Clayton
June 26, 2007

SAN ANTONIO – Just two days after seeing the ECW World Title slip out of his grasp at Vengeance: Night of Champions, CM Punk had one goal: to reestablish himself as “the man.”

“It’s time CM Punk became the man in ECW,” Punk told WWE.com before heading to the ring Tuesday night. “I’ve kind of been the uncrowned man for quite a while, but I haven’t been able to nail it down and pull the trigger on the big one. Now is the time for me to make it happen.”

And did he ever. Taking on New Breed leader Elijah Burke, Punk scored the final two pinfalls in a best-of-three-falls match to be named the No. 1 contender for Johnny Nitro’s freshly-won ECW World Title.

With both Superstars splitting the first two falls and momentum on the Straightedge Superstar’s side, Punk went for the knockout blow, trying to catch Burke in a GTS. Burke elbowed his way out of it, and after a series of counters by the pair, Punk was able to stun Burke and hit the GTS for the pinfall win.

After the match, Nitro came down to ringside and posed with the ECW World Title, staring down Punk.

Also, the AT&T Center crowd witnessed two special appearances by WWE Superstars on ECW on Sci Fi.

First, WWE Champion John Cena visited Raw for the first time in more than a year, challenging the new ECW World Champion Nitro to a Champion vs. Champion exhibition match.

Allegedly suffering from a high fever and cold symptoms, Nitro took it to the WWE Champion. He showed traces of new-found hardcore improvisation, throwing the Chain Gang commander into the ringside steps.

Nitro’s attempts to grind Cena down just couldn’t close the deal, as Cena battled back, setting up Nitro for a FU, but Nitro was able to counter it by flipping out of the slam and sending a kick to Cena’s head from the second rope.

But Nitro could not capitalize. As he set Cena on the top rope for a superplex, The Champ shoved Nitro down to the mat, and caught the ECW Champion with a leg drop from the top rope. Cena quickly hooked Nitro in the STFU submission to score the victory.

Nitro appeared later in the program to issue a warning to his ECW counterparts, saying that his loss to Cena was a fluke, due to his illness. He also said it didn’t matter who was named No. 1 contender to his title.

“I am the ECW World Champion, and no one can take that away from me,” Nitro proudly boasted.

Also, fans witnessed a meeting of the minds between former New York City schoolteacher Matt Striker and WWE Hall of Famer “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.

Striker came down to ringside during Piper’s appearance with a birthday cake in hand. He told the “Hot Rod” of his admiration for the Scot and his storied career. Then he asked Piper to join in singing “Happy Birthday” to celebrate Striker’s recent birthday. Piper lead the San Antonio fans in a round of singing, then smashed the chocolate cake in the teacher’s face just before the final verse.

As Striker tried to clean the fudge frosting out of his eyes, Boogeyman appeared from a cloud of sulfur smoke at ringside, and headed after the former educator.

Striker’s escape was cut off by Piper, who tossed him back into the ring, where the pit dweller powerbombed Striker into his cake debris. Then, as a special birthday gift for Striker, Boogeyman fed the teacher a mouthful of nightcrawlers – no gift wrap required, and no gift receipt.

TNA Impact! Results: 6-28-07

1 -- KURT ANGLE vs. RHINO vs. CHRISTIAN CAGE -- TNA Heavyweight Title match -- No DQ

Angle and Christian ganged up on Rhino, the default babyface, in the opening few minutes. After clearing Christian from the ring, Angle worked on Rhino on the mat, but Rhino powered out into an electric chair slam. Tenay told us to send a text vote for either LAX, Daniels & Styles, or the Naturals for who should face Team 3D for the tag titles on next week's show. Christian then returned to the ring and took out Angle from behind. He executed a suplex and scored a nearfall. Christian dumped Angle to the outside, then he stomped on Rhino in the corner. Christian whipped Rhino to the opposite corner, and Rhino's body collapsed. Christian smirked, then he picked him up and landed a dropkick for a nearfall. At 8:00, they set up a three-man Tower of Doom spot, then Angle fell to the mat. Christian slammed Rhino off the top onto Angle, then Christian hit a frogsplash onto both men and he covered Angle for a nearfall. Cut to break after eight good minutes of wrestling.

[Commercial Break]

We re-join the action with Angle going for successive German suplexes on Christian. The referee was checking on Rhino as Angle hit suplex after suplex. Boy, Angle really showed a nice sense of struggle going for the fifth suplex. Angle then slapped on a double anklelock, but Rhino and Christian broke free and landed double clotheslines on Angle. Suddenly, Christian and Rhino turned on each other, and everyone recovered on the mat. Christian hit the Unprettier on Angle for a nearfall at 17:00. Angle then accepted a few taunting slaps from Christian before throwing him to the floor. Rhino then came off the top rope with a diving clothesline on Angle out of nowhere for a close nearfall. He then slapped on a Boston Crab in center ring on Angle, but Rhino was distracted by Christian on the apron and he speared him to the floor. Angle took advantage of Rhino being distracted and gave him the Olympic Slam for another nearfall.

At 18:00, Christian pulled out a table from under the ring and slid it into the ring. Rhino cut off Christian once he slid the table into the ring, then he leaned the table against the corner. Christian recovered and choked out Rhino and Angle. Suddenly, Abyss walked to the ring at 20:00 for no apparent reason. He chased Christian around the ringside area, then to the backstage area.

[Commercial Break]

They returned to the Impact zone with Abyss nearly pantsing Christian backstage near the TV truck. Abyss pushed as an Igloo cooler and threw Christian head-first into the cooler. Back in the arena, Angle took Rhino down with a suplex for a close nearfall. Cut backstage where Abyss threw Christian into the side of a dumpster. Back in the ring, Angle slapped on a chokehold. Back to backstage, Abyss tried to roll a dumpster into Christian, but Christian moved. Suddenly, A.J. Styles and Tomko jumped Abyss to save Christian. Abyss tried to fight them off, but the heels continued to assault Abyss. Back in the ring, Rhino landed a forearm blow on Angle before missing with an elbow smash. Angle took control with a back suplex for a nearfall. Back to backstage, the heels ganged up on Abyss. More stomping and pounding. And now a break at 26:00.

[Commercial Break]

We re-join the match at 30:00 with Christian nowhere to be found as Angle and Rhino continued to battle in the ring. Angle worked on Rhino with the table looming large in the corner. Rhino came back with a belly-to-belly suplex, then he measured Angle for the Gore. Amazingly, Angle didn't move out of the way like you would see 99 out of 100 times, giving Rhino the Gore through the table. Christian re-emerged and covered Angle in the ring, but Chris Harris came to ringside and pulled Christian out of the ring. Yeah, another run-in! Harris then whipped Christian into the ring steps and landed left hand blows ringside. Suddenly, Tomko and Styles came to ringside and jumped Harris. They beat him ringside, then Rhino made a cover back in the ring on Angle for a nearfall. And, hey, Abyss is back to get in on the fun. Abyss threw Styles into the guardrail, then ripped into Tomko with right hands. Tenay told us that Young's match has been cancelled due to the length of the match. Oh, and here comes Sting! He choked out random men with a baseball bat before throwing Tomko in to the ring. He spanked Christian with his bat, then we saw Tomko busted wide open form the forehead. Men spilled into the ring as chaos ensued. And to a break we go at 35:00.

[Commercial Break]

We're back at 37:00 with tons of chaos in the ring and ringside. Abyss opened up Tomko even more ringside, then Abyss slammed Tomko into the timekeeper's table. Meanwhile, Sting used a baseball bat to take out the back of the legs on Styles. Tomko then came back on Abyss with a steel chair shot to the head. They fought through the stands and Tomko choked Abyss with an electrical chord. Now, I know this was a taped show taped well before anything Benoit-related occurred, but there let's show some editing discretion. Back in the ring, Angle slapped on a chokehold on Rhino. Christian was nowhere to be found. Rhino did not let his arm drop a third time on the hold, then he rallied for another comeback. At 40:00, Rhino put Angle on his shoulders before hitting the TKO. Both men were out cold in the ring, then Rhino slowly draped an arm over Angle's body for a close, dramatic nearfall. Angle and Rhino came to, and Angle took Rhino up top for an overhead release suplex that only generated a nearfall. We're four minutes away from the top of the hour, and Angle ran into a spinebuster from Rhino for another close nearfall. Angle slowly walked into an Anklelock attempt on Rhino, but Rhino used his leg strength to power out. Angle suddenly ran into another belly-to-belly suplex from Rhino. He then set up for the Gore, but James Storm ran to ringside and poured the beer on Rhino before spitting it in his face. Angle then followed with the Olympic Slam from behind for the win. West expressed outrage with Storm ruining a title match, as if the other fifteen instances of outside interference didn't matter.

WINNER: Kurt Angle in 44:00 to retain the TNA World Hvt. Title. Just way, way, way too much outside interference for a title match of this caliber and magnitude. Unfortunately, that's the first thing that comes to mind after TNA attempted to replicate John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels's amazing 56-minute TV match. Here's the difference: not a single moment of outside interference with Cena-HBK. All that said, the chaotic scene did add to the match, giving it a must-see TV feel. It was also a very unique match since the typical TNA TV match lasts two-eight-minutes. So, that allowed the match to stand out as a special title match to make up for the constant outside interference. I could think of several FSN-era X Division TV matches that were of higher wrestling quality than this match, but it was probably one of most exciting and eventful TV match in Impact history. WWE Smackdown Results: 6-29-07

The Animal's revenge
By Andrew Rote
June 29, 2007

SAN ANTONIO – Last Sunday may have been Vengeance: Night of Champions, but this week’s SmackDown was truly a night for revenge.

Much to his disappointment, Edge was forced by acting General Manager Vickie Guerrero to face Batista in a Night of Champions rematch. Even though he is not eligible to win the World Heavyweight Championship, The Animal ran wild on Edge in the main event. After punishing the Rated-R Superstar throughout much of the contest, Batista foiled his plans for a spear when he turned it into a setup for an earth-shaking Batista Bomb, following by a three-count.

As Edge lay on his back, Batista raised the World Heavyweight Championship and then dropped it on the still body of the titleholder. The Ultimate Opportunist still has the gold, but does The Animal have his number?

In one of the night’s inter-promotional matches, WWE Tag Team Champions Deuce & Domino had their hands full with Cryme Tyme. Raw’s notorious thieves tripped Domino and popped him in the kisser, breaking his nose before Domino was able to roll up Shad for the pin. Cryme Tyme may have lost, but revenge was theirs when they drove out of the arena in Deuce & Domino’s ride.

Montel Vontavious Porter didn’t look as sharp as he did when he retained the United States Championship against Ric Flair at Vengeance: Night of Champions. Capitalizing off of a missed kick by MVP, Kane sent the prosperous Superstar to the mat with a chokeslam. Fortunately for MVP, the title is still his and his contest with Kane wasn’t an Inferno Match like the last time they met at Armageddon.

Flair didn’t have the chance to get revenge on the United States Champion this week, though he was able to teach a lesson to his other young, disrespectful rival, Carlito. Raw’s self-proclaimed coolest Superstar suffered the infamous Figure Four Leg Lock before tapping out to his former mentor.

The Cruiserweight Championship was once again on the line when Chavo Guerrero faced Jamie Noble and Funaki in a Triple Threat Match. Proving once again that he deserves the gold, Chavo covered Funaki to earn the win. Perhaps nobody is quite on his level when it comes to SmackDown’s cruiserweight division.

Another chance for vengeance came when Matt Hardy took on one half the World Tag Team Champions, Lance Cade. Hardy hit him with a Twist of Fate out of nowhere and covered Cade, who didn’t have his partner in crime this time around to help him bend the rules.

In other SmackDown action, The Great Khali turned Eugene into his personal ragdoll and Mickie James spoiled Victoria’s first night in action as a member of the SmackDown roster.

Matches
Ric Flair def. Carlito
Matt Hardy def. Lance Cade
Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero def. Funaki and Jamie Noble (Triple Threat Match)
WWE Tag Team Champions Deuce & Domino def. Cryme Tyme (non-title match)
Kane def. United States Champion MVP (non-title match)
Mickie James def. Victoria
The Great Khali def. Eugene
Batista def. World Heavyweight Champion Edge (non-title match)

man i missed cryme tyme? they're my favorite tag team these days! dammit.

and yeah man something needs to be done. benoit needed some definite psychological help as well as more time off over the past couple years. i think the fact is all these guys need a straight detox from the roids, and consistent psychological evaluations and help. i'm working on getting into the amateur scene around town, and doing some competing, but i think the wrestlers no matter who they are deserve more pay, a longer off season, more stringent drug testing, more strictness on drugs, and just more psycho-analysis. before the 90's the death rate among wrestlers wasn't exorbitantly high, but at the same time men were different, sensitivities and weaknesses weren't as discussed or even known. but now, no now it's different. and benoit is a perfect example. passive aggressive, never shows his feelings, never talks about them, just a silent statue. much like he was in the WWE just a statue, no much talking, not much vocalizing, man needed help in a big way. they all do. fact is a pro baseball player makes millions a year, has half the year off, and is under nowhere near the stress and pressure imposed by the WWE. more pay, more off season time, and just more time to live and breathe. they need that more than anything else.

They put on a good show, even stealing their pink car after the match. Also broke the nose of Domino during the match (accident of course).

I agree and apparently there are those who say that the WWE should perform psychological performance tests as well as physicals.

While many people hate the fact the WWE is split up into 3 brands (RAW, ECW and Smackdown), it's having this that allows the wrestlers a few more days off, unlike years ago when they would wrestle up to 300 times a year. While TNA is nowhere as big as WWE, their central location and advance tapings of their Thursday night shows gives their wrestlers time off.

It will be interesting to see what changes the WWE end up doing in light of this horrific event.

well i see it like this. they need psych evaluations, physical evaluations, much more stringent rules on drugs, no roids allowed policy, and give em an off season. like baseball, football, basketball, and all the other sports have. let the WWE run during spring and summer like baseball ending in october. have less PPV events like just stick to royal rumble at the beginning of the season, wrestlemania somewhere in the middle, vengeance, then summer slam to decide everything at the end. and pay them more. i mean the average baseball player makes what? 5 million a year? give em 5 million a year for christ's sake. make the work they do worth it to them. i mean i know for a damn fact wrestling is the highest rated shit on TV, sells the most tickets, and has a huge fanbase willing to pay for anything. well the wrestlers need more of that. i mean fuck benoit was making just over 500,000 grand a year? there's no baseball player or basketball player who'd even play for that little. and they don't do half the work of wrestlers. let em have the fall and winter off. let the season start in late april, let it end in october, give em more money, but for the sake of all that is holy, make sure these guys are sane, safe, and drug free. kids watch this shit, we can't have kids wanting to do roids, get huge, and wrestle.

From PWTorch.com:

-- Kurt Angle won an IWGP Title from Brock Lesnar at the debut show of Antonio Inoki's IGF promotion in Tokyo on Friday. Angle won in 11 minutes via the anklelock on Lesnar, who challenged Angle for a re-match under MMA rules. Josh Barnett also challenged Angle to a title match for the belt.

More about it posted at Rob Kamphausen's Forum (direct link to thread) including video:

Today in Tokyo, Japan, a rematch of the Wrestlemania 19 main event took place as Kurt Angle defeated Brock Lesnar in a ten minute bout with an ankle lock to win the IWGP Championship, sort of. This will take some explaining.
The IWGP Championship is the top belt for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Brock Lesnar won the title on October 8, 2005 in a three way match with Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono at the Tokyo Dome. However, that July, Lesnar refused to return and defend the title (it was expected he would be dropping the belt to Hiroshi Tanahashi). Lesnar has claimed he is owed money by New Japan. New Japan held a tournament for the title, won by Tanahashi, who has since lost the title to Yuji Nagata.

Meanwhile, Lesnar has retained physical possession of the IWGP title belt. Antonio Inoki, the founder of New Japan Pro Wrestling, recently severed ties with the company and created his own company, the IGF. That company held their first show earlier today at Sumo Hall in Japan, headlined by Angle vs. Lesnar for Lesnar's IWGP championship. The storyline around the belt is that Lesnar was never beaten for the championship. New Japan reportedly has threatened to bring forth a lawsuit over Inoki using the term "IWGP", which is trademarked by New Japan Pro Wrestling. Lesnar did an interview prior to the Angle match daring Nagata to show up and face him.

That's probably the smartest idea I've ever heard (in relation to wrestling). They can't keep burning through these guys they way they have been...something like 60 dead per decade...all 40 years old and younger. It's ridiculous.

If Vince doesn't want to risk fans wandering off to rival federations during the off season, he could set up two seasons...keep the Raw/Smackdown dynamic going, but have Raw season run from April-October, and have Smackdown season run from October-April. Have the seasons overlap slightly in April and October for a big PPV or something, but otherwise, give everyone serious downtime.

i say all organizations should have an off season. just because whether you're TNA, WWE, lucha libre, or AJP, your guys are going to need a break. and giving them several months off like all other major league sports do is prolly necessary.

Here's some insight on the business from Lawrence Pfohl, better known to the world as former superstar Lex Luger.

Lex Luger doesn't mince words when asked about pro wrestling's appeal.

"People like to see freaks," said the former Lawrence Pfohl. "It's like live cartoon characters."

Not long ago, Luger was 270 pounds of romping manly aggression and animalistic sex appeal. It's what his public wanted and he gave it to them in steroid-fueled, larger-than-life doses as "The Total Package," a man who borrowed his name — sort of — from Superman's arch-enemy.

But the freak show that became Luger's life nearly killed him. The man who made millions, flew in private jets and lived in mansions is now dead broke, sleeps on a used bed and keeps his clothes in neat piles on the floor.

Luger is a pro wrestling casualty, although he considers himself lucky. He recently turned 49, an age many of his friends in the business will never see.

The latest in that growing toll was Chris Benoit, the "Canadian Crippler." The 40-year-old Fayette County resident apparently strangled his wife, choked his 7-year-old son to death and placed Bibles by their bodies before hanging himself by hitching a weight machine's cable to his neck and letting drop 240 pounds.

The Benoit family's tragic end once again exposed the sordid underbelly of professional wrestling.

Luger hadn't seen Benoit in several years but believes his old friend was in a "dark place" due, in part, to the frenetic pressures of the life and many years of drugs he took to build himself up and to keep the pain at bay. Authorities found steroids in Benoit's home and are investigating whether "roid rage," an explosive fit of aggression traced to steroid abuse, had anything to do with the deaths.

Benoit is one of many who have died early.

Keith Pinckard, a medical examiner in Dallas, started logging the deaths of pro wrestlers and ex-wrestlers after his office performed an autopsy on one killed in an accident.

"It seemed bizarre," said Pinckard, "there seemed to be a lot of deaths."

There were. He found nearly 70 who died early going back nearly 20 years. It was a rate at least seven times the rate of the general population, he calculated. The causes of deaths fell in common themes: drug overdoses and heart attacks were most common, followed by suicide and "natural causes."

Wrestling doesn't need multiple seasons, they just need to let guys work 9 months a year.... Rotate them better.

I though that Vince was going to let the wrestlers unionize after Eddie Guardado's death....
