I think Microsoft is quite content in creating a second little industry around the repair of their consoles.

They've already proven how intent they are to nickel and dime their consumers with their overpriced peripherals. Repair service is just another part of the plan to turn a profit at any cost.

I've seen more mass media coverage on the X-Box 360 problems than I did on the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 combined, though...
I think we've all learned a valuable lesson here: DON'T PUT THE DISC DRIVE RIGHT NEXT TO SOMETHING HOT.

We never bothered to try the towel trick on my buddy's 360. But today he tells me they finally called microsoft about it and it's gonna cost him $130 to get it repaired, what a bullshit scam that is.

My 360 was one of the first shipped. Not a single problem with it.

I rarely play it anymore since getting a Wii, but my roomie continues to live on it.

Even with a 10% failure rate, it's hard to imagine getting 6 or 8 in a row that were bad. Hitting a 1 in 10 chance 8 times in a row ? that's moving into lottery odds there.

What is your problem? You keep bringing up this bullshit. The PS2 had more faulty machines end of story. Who gives a flying fuck why it won't work, it just doesn't work. I could care less if the 360 has 128,671 technical problems and the PS2 only had 1 technical problem, the fact of the matter is there were more broken PS2's at launch then 360's at launch period.

You're getting a hard on about what caused the problem. The why doesn't fix it and doesn't make it any worse or better. They are both BROKE fucktard.

You've got to be one of the most dense and pragmatic members on this board.

Glad I sold mine before it died. I just need to rent one to beat Blue Dragon or something.

Even 3-5% would be intolerable, and I definitely believe it's a higher figure.
If damn near everyone I know has had one take a shit...c'mon.
Time to get those lawsuits rolling.

My local indie has stopped taking them in pre-owned now simply because they are so unreliable. 40%+ have been returned and I've read reports of the figure being as high as 60%!

Ok, I have always kept my room cold with a ceiling fan but, I guess I will turn the dial to freeze-my-ass-off setting when playing my 360. It is nice that my system is only 2 feet away from the Central AC vent. I will just hold my breath and hope for the best. If my system dies from heating issues, then that is just 100% fucked up. This is going to be my do or die microsoft project. After this I will either make a simple notpad faq saying just this "POS" or an instructional care for the system like it is more important than your own dick.

I may invest money into buying dead systems dirt cheap, get them fixed with the guys at E-bay. Then I will buy my own equipment after I make enough and then make just as much money as the price of what it cost Microsoft to repair each system. That is a lot of money. I like the idea of taking money from microsoft, this sounds good.

Yep, just sent mine off for the second time. It ran just fine for the most part, but it would spin the disc in the tray if I ejected it, even if I hadn't played the game at all and just stayed on the dashboard. Plus I was getting a small ring around all my discs.

Ah, good old M$.

:shame:

wtf
http://www.360-gamer.com/news.asp?id=1143

that's just insane

I honestly can't wait to play Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon but there's no fucking way I'm gonna take a risk and import one.
At this point I think every single "white" X360 produced so far might have some problems after a while (not necessarily the ring of death though).

bye bye X360
see ya later

I wouldnt be surprised if some lawsuits start showing up soon, this is getting ridiculous.

I think MS extending the warranty to a year was a way for them to dodge some legal action, but I don't see that working for too much longer.

EDIT: Also added some useful links to the first post

Is it possible that with machines like the 360 running hot as standard that addons like the extra fans and so on, or running them next to an A/C is actually making the problem worse?

If a 360 was turned off after play then the heat would gradually disipate(sp) from its vents and around the heatsinks and chips at a progressive rate.

If artificial means are being used to give extra cooling then surely it's going to let some components coll faster than others and the varied rate of contraction over
the whole of the mobo is going to cause problems like solder cracking and so on.

Meh, just a thought.

But if it never gets hot in the first place...

Anyway, all this stuff seems like total bullshit. What the hell happened to consoles in the last 10 years? Why do we need giant heatsinks and massive fans just to (not) keep our consoles running? You'd think these idiots would concentrate on making the systems cooler, not faster. People used to get pissed when they could hear their console. Not that it was loud, but that it made any noise at all.
I want a fucking SILENT console. The N64 did it. The Saturn did it. The Playstation (except 1000 and 1001 :emb: ) did it. No one gives a shit about graphics if their system sounds like a Mack truck and doesn't turn on half the time.

Seen as I had to buy one of these for work the other day, I can have a say in this.

"This probably won't help the huge return of Xbox 360 units being reported by SmartHouse.

Retailers are claiming that Microsoft has had to handle a failure rate of over 30% with their Xbox 360 console. During the past few weeks SmartHouse has received email after email from Xbox 360 owners complaining of problems. Ironically a lot of the problems seem to appear after 12 months of use. An EB games store retailer stated the 30% return rate at the launch of the system over a year ago."

Our box is still running fine. After a week or so that is.
