TNA Impact on Spike TV
March 1, 2007
Taped February 25 in Orlando, Florida
Report by James Caldwell, Torch columnist

We open with Jeremy Borash with Christian Cage and Tomko backstage. Tomko was dressed to wrestle. Before Tomko could start his promo, Christian cut him off and told Tomko he has a great opportunity to take out Samoa Joe tonight. Christian said they could bond like father and son - maybe enjoy a ballgame and share some Dodger Dogs. Tomko said htere's nothing in it for him to take out Joe. Christian said his incentive is that he'll give him an NWA Title shot after he takes out Joe. Tomko left and Christian whispered to Borash, "So damn selfish. I wonder where he got that from." And our stage is set.

After the usual intro aired, Mike Tenay discussed a six-way X Division match and Joe-Tomko tonight. We saw footage from 8:35 p.m. EST before the show started with Kurt Angle and Scott Steiner trying to tear each other apart. West then screamed at the viewers about what happened earlier. Tenay said something was happening in Cornette's office.

Kurt Angle and Jim Cornette had their weekly therapy session in his office, with Leticia holding the mic. Angle said what Scott Steiner did to him last week was uncalled for. Cornette screamed at Angle not to screw up his TV show after all the favors he's done for him. Angle said he would do what he has to do.

Random X Division men came to the ring for a six-man tag match. Shelley handed a DVD to Tenay and West before handing off his camera to So Cal Val. The faces came out, then Kevin Nash and Sonjay Dutt came to ringside and asked Lethal to do a Randy Savage impersonation. Lethal did his intro, then the heels jumped him to start the match.

1 -- SENSHI & JERRY LYNN & JAY LETHAL vs. AUSTIN STARR & ALEX SHELLEY & X Division champion CHRIS SABIN

The face team recovered quickly and scored with a three-person highspot from the ring to the floor. Bob Backlund then came to ringside before they cut to a break.

Backlund was on commentary as Starr isolated Lethal in the heel corner. Shelley and Sabin hooked up on a sweet Muta Lock and double foot kick to the face combination spot on Lethal. As if we need a third person screaming on this show, Backlund kept screaming at Tenay and West. Meanwhile, there was a match in the ring and the camera kept focusing on Backlund. Do we need any more examples of TNA trying to bury the X Division? Senshi took a hot tag and landed a hard chop to the chest on Starr. He then landed combo kicks on Shelley. Starr accepted a series of stiff kicks from Senshi, but Sabin caught him from behind with the Cradle Shock. Lynn prevented a pin attempt by Sabin, then Lynn hit the TKO out of the fireman's carry position. Backlund left the broadcast table to check on Senshi. Meanwhile, Starr gave Lethal a brainbuster suplex and talked trash. Backlund then grabbed Starr by the foot and shoved him into the ring where Lethal rolled him up from behind and used a bridge pin to win. Afterward, Backlund chased Starr from the ring and extended a hand to Senshi, who turned him down with a bow.

WINNERS: Senshi & Lethal & Lynn in 8:00. Plenty of action to start the show, but, as usual, way too much happening at once. (*3/4)

They plugged this month's text-messaging feature on whether Rhino or A.J. Styles would take the plunge on the Elevation X.

We saw a video package on the Sad Day in the Life of Eric Young. Young arrived at the hotel, balanced Robert Roode's luggage up eighteen floors on the elevator, then arrived at Roode Inc.'s hotel room where Roode and Ms. Brooks gave Young his instructions for the day. Roode spilled some popcorn on the floor and told Young to vacuum. Young said his friend told him he doesn't have to do this. Roode then reminded him that he signed a contract.

Sting did another pre-tape interview from a casket. He asked Abyss how he sees life after death. Sting said Abyss only has a few more days left to ponder. "At Destination X, Abyss, you will die," Sting said. He told Abyss not to choose death six feet under, but to choose the light with a new slate.

Borash found Abyss backstage looking at a picture of James Mitchell. A boom mic entered the shot, then Abyss grabbed the man holding the boom and threw him against the wall.

Scott Steiner came out to the ring flexing. Kurt Angle then jumped him from behind and landed hard blows. The X Division faces hit the ring and tried to pull Angle away from Steiner. Cornette held back Angle while Steiner entered the ring for an apparent wrestling match.

2 -- SCOTT STEINER vs. CHASE STEVENS

Steiner then blindsided Stevens and put him up top. He gave him a top rope belly-to-belly suplex and covered him for the win.

Steiner then left the ring and grabbed a mic. He said the next time he's in the ring with Angle, he's going to leave him in a pool of his own blood. Steiner said he embarrassed Angle last week, but most importantly, he embarrassed him in front of his family. "Oh, it's getting personal now," Tenay interjected. Steiner said Angle's wife told him Angle's not half the man he is. Angle had enough and jumped Steiner from off camera. They continued to brawl while security and random X Division men tried to separate them. Cornette had enough and screamed at Angle that the whole show doesn't revolve around him. Angle then dropped Cornette on the mat and put him in the Anklelock. The wrestlers stopped Angle, then Cornette got up and ripped off his jacket. He reminded Angle that he's his best friend in the company because he knows Angle means box office. He reminded Angle that everyone else in the company wants to cut his nuts off to get his spot. Cornette then ejected Angle from the building. More security spilled into the ring to take Angle away. Of course, the big question is where's Shane Douglas to get himself over?

WINNER: Steiner in 0:30. They're going to have to keep Angle-Steiner short at the PPV since it doesn't appear that Steiner is in wrestling shape. It's hard to get a read after a thirty-second match, but they're going to have to depend on stunts and bag-of-tricks at the PPV. (n/a)

Tenay and West screamed at the camera in reaction to Cornette giving Angle the boot. We saw footage from during the commercial break when Don Harris forced Angle to leave the building. Angle cursed Harris and the X Division wrestlers on the way out of the building.

Leticia did a sit-down interview with "the Pirate" Chris Harris. Harris said the doctors haven't cleared him to wrestle with limited vision in his right eye. He said James Storm needs to be looking over his shoulder everywhere he goes.

Alex Shelley returned to ringside and introduced his new Paparazzi Productions called Massacre: New York. We saw footage of LAX entering a random wrestling office before beatind down Johnny Rodz. Homicide pulled down a photo of a very young Devon in a classic wrestler pose and shoved it in Rodz's face. Back live, Tenay let us know that Rodz trained Devon. Shelley then asked for his film stars to come down and accept congratulations, but Brother Ray cut him off. Ray said he would throw up on Shelley and beat him down. Yes, he said he would throw up on Shelley. He said that footage made him sick. Ray then slapped the mic out of Shelley's hand and gave us a brief look at Rodz - the man, the myth, and the legend. Ray asked Shelley why he would hold the camera for something like that and asked whether they had heat even though they don't even know each other. Kevin Nash then walked to ringside and Ray told him that there's no issue between them; the issue is between him and Nash's butt buddy, Shelley. LAX then jumped Ray from behind. Ray fought them off since he's Brother Ray, then Shelley caught him from behind with a low blow. Tenay then told us that Devon is back in New York tending to Rodz, so Ray is all alone. LAX then beat down Ray before Konnan appeared on the stage and screamed, "LAX, get the tables." Hernandez set up a table in the ring and dumped Ray through the table. LAX's music hit, then they left the ring before security returned to the ring to check on Ray.

We have Breaking News from the set of Rambuck Killings. Apparently, Killings was fired...er...injured on the set and the project has been suspended indefinitely. I'm not seeing the point in this.

Borash was backstage to plug the Destination X PPV before welcoming Samoa Joe to the interview position. Joe said all the sacrifice and suffering culminates at Destination X when he takes the NWA Title away from Christian. He said tonight, Tomko pays for the sins of his father. Forget about Joe, let's find out what Abyss is up to. Off camera, Abyss was choking out someone, then Joe grabbed Abyss and threw him against a wall. He told Abyss he could continue to be a puppet or get over it and be a man for once.

3 -- TOMKO vs. SAMOA JOE

Backstage, we saw the way-too-casually-dressed-for-a-champion Christian Cage toss a cordless phone aside and smirk at the TV monitor. Back in the ring, Tomko jumpstarted the match by landing forearm blows on Joe. They had a brief exchange before Tomko knocked him down with a big boot. Joe then clotheslined Tomko over the top rope to the floor. Joe then landed a suicide dive with an elbow smash. We saw Christian Cage leaving his locker room, presumably heading for the ring.

Back from the break, Tomko had Joe in a sleeper hold. Joe fought out, then ran into a lift-up slam for a nearfall. Tomko applied a neck vice, but Joe fought out again and hit a snap powerslam for a nearfall. Joe went for the Muscle buster, but Christian slipped into the ring and landed a chair shot after the referee distracted himself. Tomko then hit a running clothesline for the pin and the win. The fans in the front row shook their heads in collective disbelief.

Afterward, Christian screamed at the announcers, then he returned to the ring with the title belt. Joe stole the belt, though, and smashed it over Tomko's face. He then put Christian in a rear naked choke before Scott Steiner hit the ring and jumped Joe. They beat down Joe before Christian gave him the Unprettier. Abyss's music hit, then Abyss cleared the heels from the ring. Everyone stood their ground, then Joe slowly got up, which led to Abyss hitting the Black Hole Slam. Tenay, surprised, said they never expected that. Why? He did that Sting at least twice and Joe just shoved him against a wall backstage. TNA's scripting of the announcers makes it seem like they have no common sense or awareness of what's going on. We close the show with Christian smiling with his cronies ringside.

WINNER: Tomko in 7:00. You really don't get a sense that Joe is challenging for the NWA Title in 10 days. We know he's challenging for the belt, but they've turned his quest for the title in a secondary story on the show. It doesn't seem like a big deal with Steiner-Angle grabbing the most TV time and Joe losing TV matches. I certainly wouldn't expect Shawn Michaels to lose a TV singles match one week before WrestleMania. (*1/4)

Future of WSX

WSX News: Big Vision awaiting word about future of WSX on MTV, no announcement yet

Big Vision Entertainment has postponed the announcement regarding the future of the WSX promotion on MTV. MTV is in a state of chaos at the moment as in addition to 250 layoffs in the U.S. last week at MTV, more than 200 more layoffs took place in the London office. Yes, MTV had that many employees.

Big Vision expects to be able to make an announcement by the end of tomorrow regarding the future of WSX on MTV. As reported earlier, it has been removed from next week's schedule.

On the bright side for WSX's prospects, the person who was just named president of MTV was the person who green-lit the WSX project in the first place, and he is now in charge of scheduling, so WSX could conceivably be saved. That said, the previous president who was fired was a big supporter of the WSX program, so it's tough to tell how all of this affects the future of WSX.

Big Vision Entertainment can shop the show to other networks if MTV drops it. Big Vision owns WSX, not MTV.

WWE Smackdown Results: 3-2-07

A grave warning
By Lennie DiFino
March 2, 2007

Batista last week told Undertaker and WWE fans, "I am not intimidated by anyone." The Animal may be rethinking that statement after seeing the response of his WrestleMania 23 opponent, Undertaker, on The CW Network’s No. 1 rated show - SmackDown.

The Phenom sent an ominous message of his own this week to the World Heavyweight Champion - Batista. While The Animal stood in the center of the ring reiterating his comments from last week, the champion was interrupted when the sold-out HP Pavilion arena in San Jose, Calif. went dark, and Undertaker was shown standing in a cemetery, digging a grave.

"Batista, for some, WrestleMania is heaven on earth, but for you it is going to be hell," said Undertaker. "At WrestleMania, your reign as champion will rest in peace."

The World Heavyweight Champion Batista was left speechless by the actions and words of Undertaker. For those who have followed the amazing 14-0 undefeated streak of Undertaker at WrestleMania, this message could be one the Phenom delivers on April 1 in Detroit.

Mr. McMahon arrived at SmackDown to brag about the beating he ordered Umaga to administer last week to an already injured Rey Mysterio. ECW World Champion Bobby Lashley made his way out and Mr. McMahon attempted to offer Lashley a way out of his obligations to Donald Trump in the Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23, even offering the ECW Champion double what Trump was paying him.

Lashley refused, saying, "it was an honor to be chosen by Donald Trump.” He continued, “it will be a privilege to compete at WrestleMania and it will be my pleasure to defeat Umaga (McMahon’s representative)," Mr. McMahon became irate. The Chairman then slapped ECW’s World Champion, and when Lashley snapped back and stared at him, Mr. McMahon ducked out of the ring, the arena and San Jose.

Before he made it out of San Jose, Mr. Kennedy approached Mr. McMahon and asked for a title opportunity against Bobby Lashley. Mr. McMahon granted the request, and added the rules that Mr. Kennedy could not be disqualified or counted out, but Lashley could.

A confident Kennedy did all he could in the match to win his first world title, but even with the odds against him, Bobby Lashley defeated Kennedy to retain his ECW World Championship.

The Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 23 had two more qualifying matches on SmackDown, with Matt Hardy facing Joey Mercury in the first contest. Hardy and Mercury have had a heated rivalry since the beginning of December of ‘06, and the personal brutality continued between the two Superstars. When Mercury looked to finish Hardy off with a high risk maneuver, Hardy countered, and delivered a Twist of Fate from the ropes to get the victory.

King Booker, who qualified last week by defeating Kane in the first-ever Falls Count Anywhere Qualifying Match, sat ringside on commentary for this contest, getting a first-hand look at his competition for WrestleMania 23.

In the second qualifying match, United States Champion Chris Benoit competed in the first-ever Triple Threat Qualifying Match against MVP and Finlay.

Before the match began, Finlay berated SmackDown announcer Michael Cole for referring to Hornswoggle by any other name. It could have been that fire that lit Finlay. In a physically brutal match between the three men, Finlay was able to get the victory when Hornswoggle distracted the ref, allowing the Irishman to use the shillelagh on both opponents and qualify for the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at WrestleMania 23.

There are now 7 known participants in the match April 1 in Detroit - Jeff Hardy, Edge, Matt Hardy, Finlay, King Booker, CM Punk and Mr. Kennedy. Who will be the last Superstar in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match?

Jimmy Wang Yang, Shannon Moore and Scotty 2 Hotty squared off against Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero, former champion Gregory Helms and Daivari. The action was fast-paced and high-flying, and Jimmy Wang Yang was able to get the win for his team when he pinned Daivari after a Moonsault.

Ashley, the April Playboy cover girl, defeated Jillian in a Diva match. While the beautiful Ashley is treating WWE fans with her pulse-pounding, upcoming Playboy appearance, Jillian is making ears bleed in arenas around the world.

Finally, Jerry "The King" Lawler has been announced as the newest inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Matches
Matt Hardy def. Joey Mercury - Money in the Bank Qualifying Match
Jimmy Wang Yang, Scotty 2 Hotty & Shannon Moore def. Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero, Gregory Helms & Daivari
Ashley def. Jillian
Finaly def. MVP and United States Champion Chris Benoit - Triple Threat Money in the Bank Qualifying Match
ECW World Champion Bobby Lashley def. Mr. Kennedy

As reported late last night by Martin Hawrysko, it appears MTV has made a final decision to cancel the "Wrestling Society X" series after only four episodes.

PWInsider is reporting that MTV has already removed next week's scheduled airing of Wrestling Society X (which was to be Episode #5) and have replaced it with "High School Stories: Scandals, Pranks, Controversies." MTV's website has also removed WSX from its listing of official series as well. The official website for WSX (WSX.MTV.com) is still currently online.

Declining ratings for WSX was a strong factor in MTV making the decison yesterday to reportedly cancel the series. Here is how the ratings breakdown looked for MTV this past Tuesday (February 28) including WSX: "Bam's Unholy Union" at 8:00pm did a 0.7 rating, "Bam's Unholy Union" at 8:30pm did a 0.8 rating, "Road Rules XIV" at 9:00pm did a 0.7 rating, "Bam's Unholy Union" at 9:30pm did a 1.0 rating, "Two-A-Days" at 10:00pm did a 0.9 rating and "Wrestling Society X" at 10:30pm did a 0.6 rating.

WSX losing a third of the audience from its lead-in, "Two-A-Days", did not help its cause after returing from a one week hiatus. We will continue to follow this story as it develops.

The following statement was issued to PWTorch.com from Big Vision Entertainment, the parent company of Wrestle Society X, which as of Thursday was removed from MTV's posted schedule for next Tuesday...

First, I want to thank all of the wrestling fans and press for their support, not only over the past few, confusing, days, but since the debut of WSX on MTV.

Earlier today we spoke with executives at MTV and can now share with you the following.

MTV is making no statement in regards to canceling Wrestling Society X. However, WSX will be pulled off the Tuesday night lineup in order to strategize the best way to bring the show back to the network and to the fans.

Although the show has not been performing as well as the network had hoped in the Tuesday night lineup, we have been told that other MTV departments including MTV 2, MTV Online, MTV Mobile, and MTV Video-On-Demand are 100% behind Wrestling Society X. Additionally, the Creative and Development executives at MTV have commended us on the production of the show and are saddened by the lack of response due to scheduling mishaps and under-promotion.

Until details are released regarding when the next NEW episode of WSX will air, all four previous episodes will be available on WSX.MTV.COM along with their WSXtra counterparts. Furthermore, fans with MTV Video-On-Demand can watch both the regular episodes and WSXtras on their TVs.

From all of us here at Big Vision Entertainment, we thank you for your continuing support and look forward to bringing you more of the evolution of sports entertainment shortly!

Sincerely,
Houston Curtis
CEO
Big Vision Entertainment

-- TNA increased to a 1.11 rating, a jump of 0.1 over last week's rating. That equals 1.4 million viewers. It outperformed "Pros vs. Joes," which drew a 0.82 rating (essentially the same as previous week), and Inside the UFC, which drew a 0.57 rating.

-- WWE Smackdown from last night averaged a 2.9 rating in the Fast National ratings announced this afternoon, but it was good enough for fourth place on a weak night of broadcast television. The show started with a 2.8 first hour and finished with a 3.0 second hour, which was good enough for third place ahead of ABC and FOX for the hour. The show finished ahead of FOX in the adult 18-49 demographic with a 1.6 rating.

WWE RAW Results: 3-5-07

A stunning revelation
By Noah Starr
March 5, 2007

In front of a sold-out crowd of 15,792 WWE fans, the Texas Rattlesnake arrived in the Arizona desert. The U.S. Airways Center exploded as Stone Cold Steve Austin entered the ring, officially announced as the man who will act as special guest referee in the Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23.

Mr. McMahon was dumbfounded as Eric Bischoff, Mick Foley and even Shane McMahon entered the ring to reveal that they were not elected by the WWE Board of Directors as special guest referee. That’s when the Rattlesnake struck. In true Stone Cold style, Austin chugged brews and gave the Chairman a complimentary beer bath. With one billionaire’s hair on the line at WrestleMania, will Austin remain impartial? Or, will the desire to see his old nemesis shaved bald skew Stone Cold’s judgment when ECW World Champion Bobby Lashley faces Umaga in less than a month?

Earlier, the wild night began with World Tag Team Champions Shawn Michaels and John Cena in the locker room area. The tension in the air was palpable as HBK laid it all out for the WWE Champion.

“I will have your back until WrestleMania… I’ve turned against all my partners and more importantly, I’ve stabbed all my friends in the back. But with you, John, it’s different.”

After HBK told Cena he didn’t need his help in his match that night, the No. 1 contender for the WWE Championship entered the ring to face Randy Orton. Moments after HBK rolled Orton up for the win, Edge entered the ring to watch the Legend Killer treat Michaels to an RKO on a steel chair. In the blink of an eye, down the ramp came John Cena who cleared the ring and saved his tag team partner.

The night was not over for Cena. Orton told Edge that he would not have his back during the Rated-R Superstar’s match with The Champ, and after Edge refused to compete in the main event due to some excuse about Arizona being the last state in the union to recognize Martin Luther King Day, Johnny Nitro stepped up in his place. Just as it looked like Cena had gotten the best of the A-lister, Joey Mercury interrupted the contest. Soon Edge and both male members of MNM were attacking the WWE Champion. Just then, Shawn Michaels blasted down the ramp -- stopping just short of the ring. After almost leaving, HBK seemed to have a change of heart and entered the fray to save Cena. Was Michaels about to leave his tag team hanging out to dry?

In the first-ever Falls Count Anywhere Match for the Women’s Championship, Mickie James battled current Women’s Champion Melina in the ring, around the ring and even inside the Diva locker room! When the dust finally settled, Melina pinned Mickie to retain her title. But after Melina verbally attacked guest ring announcer Ashley, the future Playboy cover girl knocked Melina on her butt.

In what was meant to be the final Money in the Bank Qualifying match, Carlito faced Ric Flair, who recently became almost a coach to the Southpaw from San Juan. Before the match ended, The Great Khali stormed in and laid both Superstars out. In broken English, the behemoth screamed: “I want Kane!” Will Flair and Carlito get another opportunity to qualify for a trip to WrestleMania or will the last spot go to someone else? Will Khali get his wish?

Also on Raw, the brutal Intercontinental Champion Umaga once again bulldozed fan-favorite Jeff Hardy. Can even the powerful Bobby Lashley defeat this savage? Later, amidst chants of “U.S.A.,” Hacksaw Jim Duggan failed to break Chris Masters’ legendary hold in the Master Lock Challenge, and before the night ended, Nick Bockwinkel was announced as the newest inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2007.

Matches
World Tag Team Champion Shawn Michaels def. Randy Orton
Intercontinental Champion Umaga def. Jeff Hardy
Chris Masters def. Hacksaw Jim Duggan (Master Lock Challenge)
WWE Women's Champion Melina def. Mickie James (Falls Count Anywhere)
Ric Flair vs. Carlito (Money in the Bank Qualifying Match; No Contest)
WWE Champion John Cena def. Johnny Nitro (Disqualification)

For the second time, Mickie James landed awkwardly on her head during a match. It almost looked like she broke her neck when she fell down during last night's match with Melina. I'm thinking it's Melina's inexperience causing the problems.

We lost another wrestler...

Bad News Brown passes away at 63

Slam Wrestling posted the following sad news tonight regarding the death of Allen Coage. Personally anyone who has heard our hotline and webcast over the years, he was one of our favorites. I strongly recommend anyone to pick up the RF Video Shoot Interview they did with Bad News. A very classy man.

Everyone here at Wrestling-News.com and The Minority Report sends along our condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Allen Coage.

Here's Slam Wrestling's article on his passing:

Former Olympic judo bronze medalist Allen Coage -- better known to wrestling fans as Bad News Allen and Bad News Brown -- has died suddenly. He was 63.

Coage died early Tuesday morning in Calgary at Rockyview Hospital, having been rushed to the hospital, complaining of chest pains.

Three weeks ago, Coage underwent hip replacement surgery and had been making progress on his recovery. Monday night, he was home alone and called longtime friend Gerry Morrow, complaining of chest pains. Morrow got him to the hospital.

Coage broke into professional wrestling through the New Japan Pro Wrestling organization, training in Japan and spending the first few years after the 1976 Montreal Olympics in Japan. He was known as Buffalo Coage there.

In the Calgary Stampede promotion, he was a star as Bad News Allen, having bloody feuds with the likes of The Dynamite Kid, Archie 'The Stomper' Gouldie, Bret Hart and others.

"Bad News Allen was one of those four or five wrestlers who I considered to be the hardest men in wrestling," Tom 'Dynamite Kid' Billington wrote in his autobiography. "He was definitely bad news. Don't get me wrong, he was a good friend, but once he got you in the ring, it was as if he didn't know you. I've had a lot of hard matches in my career, most of them in Japan, because that's how they like their wrestling, but the matches I had with Bad News were something else."

In the WWF of the late 1980s, he was known as Bad News Brown, and feuded with Bret Hart, Jake Roberts, Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper.

Coage often complained about his WWF run, which followed the closure of Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling promotion. "I made a lot of money up here with Stu. He enjoyed me because I put asses in the seats," Coage recalled in July 2006, leading into a typical straightforward explanation on his WWF days. "They handcuffed me. They pretty much didn't let me do what I should have done.

"They really held me down ... you've got your head guys, and Randy [Savage] called all the shots, so he was the one. I figured the object is to make money, and if this guy can make some money for you, you let him go, let him do his thing. I guess there was a lot of jealousy there, or whatever. I don't know his reason or whatever, but he was the one because he called all the shots."

Jake Roberts recalled Bad News. "He was good, very good," said The Snake. Was Coage hard to work with "No, he was fucking easy." Even the judo stuff? "I had no problem at all working with him. We had a great time."

With his mean-looking face and a constant scowl, Coage delivered many memorable interviews. He is best known for slagging all the "beer-bellied sharecroppers" that watched Stampede.

When Stampede Wrestling re-started on TV in 1999, Coage was tapped to be a colour commentator, alongside Mauro Renallo.

He had been working the last number of years as a security guard at a mall; "Teenagers are a pain in the ass. You always have to run them off," he said in July 2006. Apparently they didn't know who they were messing with. "It don’t matter to them, they're tough."

Coage is survived by his wife Helen and their children.

Ratings...

Last night's Raw drew a first hour rating of 3.8 and a second hour rating of 4.3, with an overall average of approximately 4.05. The final overall number will be available later when quarter hour and overrun ratings are averaged. It was down from last week's 4.3 rating, which could be considered a letdown considering Steve Austin was on the show.

In the key demo of men 18-34, it drew a 4.03 and among men 18-49, it drew a 3.56, both equal with the average over the previous four weeks.

ECW on Sci-Fi Results: 3-6-07

Rattlesnake's venomous visit
By Craig Tello
March 6, 2007

Glass broke, beer cans got cracked and all hell was raised in the Land of the Extreme as “Stone Cold” Steve Austin made his first-ever appearance on ECW on Sci Fi.

Trumping Mr. McMahon’s surprise appearance on ECW on Tuesday night, the Battle of the Billionaires special guest referee promised to be present at the contract signing between Donald Trump and the WWE Chairman this coming Monday on Raw.

Just before throwing back several six-packs with the ECW Die Hards, Austin explained that he will have no bias at WrestleMania 23 because he doesn’t like Mr. McMahon, Trump or any billionaire. He also said he has no problem dropping a Stunner on Lashley or Umaga if he needs to. Ultimately, the Texas Rattlesnake "guaran-damn-teed" that be it the Chairman or “The Donald,” he will make sure that a billionaire will leave Ford Field bald on April 1.

Less than 24 hours after Stone Cold was revealed as the referee for the Battle of the Billionaires, the WWE Chairman came to ECW on Sci Fi with a purpose on Tuesday night. Just as he had on SmackDown the week before, Mr. McMahon came to offer Donald Trump’s representative Bobby Lashley the opportunity to back out before WrestleMania 23. Demanding Lashley’s apology as well, the Chairman audaciously replayed – numerous times – the SmackDown footage of him slapping the ECW World Champion.

This exposition came to a close, however, as a cool, unfazed Lashley confronted the maniacal McMahon in the middle of the ECW ring. As the champion extended his hand to the egocentric Chairman, it seemed Lashley was actually making a deal with McMahon and backing out of the WrestleMania clash. Suddenly, the ECW World Champion’s expression changed from a warm smile to a hostile, intense glare and the handshake between the two turned into a painful encounter for McMahon, who was brought to his knees.

“If you ever, ever lay a hand on me again, I will break you in half,” said a fierce Lashley to the agonized Chairman.

With the “Biggest Spectacle of Them All” being just three weeks away, the stakes were raised in the conflict between the ECW Originals and the New Breed. After Rob Van Dam Five-Star Frog Splashed his way through the brash Elijah Burke, Tommy Dreamer laid down an emotional challenge to the New Breed at WrestleMania 23. In eight-man tag action, Dreamer, RVD, Sandman and Sabu will collide with Marcus Cor Von, Matt Striker, Kevin Thorn and Elijah Burke live in Detroit on April 1.

Before they head to WrestleMania, it seems the New Breed might be attempting to add some recruits to their ranks. Prior to his match with RVD, Elijah Burke tried to persuade Money in the Bank participant CM Punk to align with the New Breed. Though Punk didn't appear interested in this proposal, it looks as if the services of the straightedge Superstar are a hot commodity in the Land of the Extreme.

Also on ECW on Sci Fi, the deranged Snitsky continued to ravage the ECW roster. After Hardcore Holly secured a decisive victory over Balls Mahoney, Snitsky stormed the ring just as he has for the past several weeks. The monstrous competitor proved to have no allegiance to anyone as he set his sights on the wily Alabaman, nearly decapitating Holly with a big boot.

Rob Van Dam def. Elijah Burke

-- As we’ve been reporting, TNA Wrestling and NWA have agreed to end their partnership.

Bob Trobich, of NWA, and Steve Campbell, of Panda Energy, have been negotiating an agreement to cease their partnership. NWA will be taking their Heavyweight and Tag titles back. This will take place in a storyline at Destination X on PPV this Sunday.

NWA had a number of rules, which TNA did not follow. Such as, when a title change were to take place TNA officials were suppose to notify the NWA board of such changes. TNA also refused to pay a fee when they had an event in another NWA member’s territory. These actions are a result of the two parties coming to an agreement and splitting.

It’s expected that this Sunday, at Destination X, they will drop the NWA named titles to become TNA titles. How this will all transpire is unknown at this point in time.

Exclusive: Sabu Leaving WWE, Headed To TNA?

According to sources, it appears that TNA and Sabu have had preliminary discussions about his next move in pro wrestling. Sabu's contract with WWE is ending within the next few months, leaving him available to return to TNA if both parties were to work out a deal.

It should be noted that WWE's schedule has taken a toll on Sabu's body, most recently in the summer and fall season. Considering other reports that have made the rounds stating that Sabu has not been happy with his time in WWE and that he has strong heat from other workers in the company (along with others including The Sandman), it isn't hard to imagine this could be his next move.

the return of ecw i believe...

I think so as well. Once Heyman was on board, he was given a big enough pay to lure him away from TNA and stay with the WWE.

Big Show's contract with WWE expired just days ago. He was offered a six-figure "intellectual property" offer where WWE would retain rights to his likeness being used in any project, but he turned that down.

He is not, however, expected to sign with TNA anytime soon. Instead, he is involved in another project which will be announced likely before summer.

Big Show, real name Paul Wight, has lost a lot of weight since leaving WWE, as he is taking better care of himself since he's not on the road tempted by restaurant indulgences and catering. He also has stopped smoking; he had been a chain smoker.

TNA Impact! Results: 3-8-07

TNA Impact on Spike TV
March 8, 2007
Taped February 26 in Orlando, Florida
Report by James Caldwell, Torch columnist

We open with a recap of Samoa Joe losing to Tomko last week. Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe were then in the ring to start the show. Angle said Steiner's ass is his at the PPV. He then said Christian wouldn't be going through the back door on him like he did to Joe last week. Angle said he's going to be Joe's biggest fan at Destination X when Joe beats Christian Cage for the NWA Title. He then said Joe and himself can solve their issues when that happens. Angle called out Christian and Steiner, then Christian, Tomko, and Steiner came out. Christian reminded Angle that they're an inseparable family: the Christian Coalition. The fans paid tribute to Steve Austin with the "What?" chants. Christian then told Angle and Joe to find themselves a tag partner so they can't say the odds were stacked against them when they kick their asses later in the match. So far, the bleep count on "ass" is about five or six. Network for men, right? More like PBS. Angle then said he has a partner in mind that might be a little crazy. He teased that they would find out who the person is later in the show. Joe, the #1 Contender to the NWA Title, gets no speaking parts in the opening segment.

The usual Impact intro aired, then Tenay plugged two other six-man tag matches on the show tonight.

1 -- B.G. JAMES & KIP JAMES & LANCE HOYT vs. SEROTONIN (KAZARIAN & BENTLEY & DEVINE)

Tenay let us know that Raven has re-named his group Kaz, Martyr, and Havoc. Kip took a chop block from Bentley to start the match, then Kaz tagged in and took a weak Ace Crusher from Kip. The announcers talked about everything else but the match, then Hoyt tagged in and cleared Serotonin. He then gave Havoc (Devine) a "Texas Tornado" slam from the fireman's carry position for the win. This time, B.G. gets no ring time. Afterward, Raven walked to the ring and caned all three men.

WINNERS: James Gang in 2:00. I'm sorry, but how is Raven caning three men who have one victory in 2007 going to sell a PPV? Ridiculous waste of time. (1/4*)

Borash was backstage and found Christian Coalition for a promo. Christian wanted to know who Joe and Angle's partner is. Steiner, didn't know, which led to him and Christian forcing an exchange about the Hunchback of Notre Dame. And you think I'm making this up. Christian said he thinks their partner is Abyss, then he discussed strategy with Steiner. This brings up the issue of why Christian and Steiner are discussing strategy in front of the camera when Angle and Joe are presumably watching on the monitors backstage. Steiner bailed, then Tomko said he would help Christian when he gets his NWA Title shot. Tomko left, then Christian told Borash that they need to go find Abyss. Borash said he has to go to the ring.

[Commercial Break]

[Q2]

We saw a video package on Elevation X featuring Styles vs. Rhino.

Tenay was in the ring with Borash, Leticia, and the lovely So Cal Val to present an award to Hector Guerrero. As Hector walked out, West did a voice-over complementing Hector on his accomplishments as part of the Guerrero family. Hector thanked TNA and Eddie for inspiring him. He cut a promo in Spanish, then Val was about to present him with a plaque, but Abyss's music interrupted. Abyss walked out and West, again, had to carry the broadcast alone. Once Abyss entered the ring, Hector dropped his jacket and stared him down. Val then slowly handed the plaque to Abyss, who accepted it before giving Val the Black Hole Slam. He posed for the hard camera. Again, I'm not seeing how this segment is selling a PPV match with Sting.

We saw a pre-tape promo exchange from Samoa Joe and Christian Cage about their title match at the PPV.

[Commercial Break]

Tenay then recapped Abyss giving Val the Black Hole Slam before the break.

They suddenly went back to Cornette's office where random people were screaming and hollering. Cornette granted James Storm & Jackie Moore a double bull rope match against Petey Williams & Gail Kim. Cornette then addressed Chris Sabin, who was doing the old man gimmick. He gave Sabin a two-out-of-three falls match against Jerry Lynn. Backlund jumped onto Cornette's office and wanted to know if he could special referee the Austin Starr vs. Senshi match. Cornette rejected that offer, then said the match could only be won by using the Chicken wing. Backlund left, then we saw Christy Hemme sitting in the corner waiting for her turn. She said she said she wanted VKM at the PPV. Cornette made some sexist jokes, then Christy said she had a surprise team to face VKM. Cornette gave her the match, then shooed her away. And Leticia just stood there the whole time holding the mic.

2 -- SONJAY DUTT & JAY LETHAL & PETEY WILLIAMS vs. ERIC YOUNG & ROBERT ROODE (w/Ms. Brooks) & JAMES STORM (w/Jackie Moore)

Tenay talked about Lethal's "character development," then Dutt asked Lethal to do a Savage impersonation. He did a brief impersonation at Young's encouraging, but Roode jumped him from behind. Young then did a Hogan-like slow walk towards Lethal, who accepted a handshake. So, the match is based around TNA wrestlers having no unique personalities, and trying to "develop character" by imitating former wrestlers.

[Q3]

The match broke down at 3:00, then Petey hit a slingshot huracanrana onto Roode on the outside. Gail Kim then came to ringside and brawled with Moore. Back in the ring, Storm gave Dutt a superkick for the win. Afterward, the camera focused on Gail vs. Jackie before the men broke up the fight.

WINNERS: Roode & Storm & Young in 4:00. Inconsequential match trying to get in too many things at once. WWE has stepped up its quality of programming the last few months, while TNA is content doing the same running gags that don't work. TNA is apparently content with status quo right now, otherwise they would be raising their level of play. (3/4*)

Suddenly, we went backstage where Christian and Borash found Abyss rocking back and forth in a chair while staring at a picture of James Mitchell. Christian reminded Abyss that he kept Abyss's secret, but Sting blurted it out. Abyss nearly ripped Christian's throat off at the mention of "Sting". Christian said Sting is just like Angle and Joe because they all look at Abyss like a piece of meat. He told Abyss that he's a friend to him and he'd like to help him out. Abyss calmed down, then Christian said he brought a peace offering. He nodded toward Borash, then Christian grabbed Borash and threw him to Abyss, who slammed him into the wall before locking him inside a temporary cage. Christian was great here with his Gob-like demeanor.

[Commercial Break]

We came back for footage of LAX beating down Brother Ray last week. Devon then cut a pre-tape promo challenging LAX to a ghetto brawl where any weapons go. Ray said they would keep fighting LAX until they finally have revenge.

Tenay and West, with his heavy breathing, plugged the Destination X card.

We saw a video package on Sting vs. Abyss in the Last Rites match. Sting told Abyss not to choose death now that he doesn't have the devil (Mitchell) in his ear any longer.

Scott Steiner, then Christian Cage and Tomko came to the ring for the main event.

[Commercial Break]

[Q4]

Samoa Joe came to the ring and Tenay talked about Joe's quest for the NWA Title. It sounded like completely empty words since the focus of the show has been nowhere close to Joe's title quest without a new video package, no interview with Joe, and too many other angles muddying the water on the show. Angle came out, then Rhino showed up as Joe and Angle's tag partner.

3 -- KURT ANGLE & SAMOA JOE & RHINO vs. CHRISTIAN CAGE & SCOTT STEINER & TOMKO

They fought on the outside to start the match. Back in the ring, Joe gave Steiner an atomic drop followed by boot to the face and sentaun splash. Joe then caught Christian with a sidekick to the head before Christian sent him to the outside. Angle picked up where Joe left off and gave Christian a European uppercut. As Rhino set up for the Gore on Tomko at 2:00, A.J. Styles hit the ring in street clothes. Rhino cleared him to the outside, though. Styles then climbed the Elevation X structure and Rhino chased him up top. They cut to a break.

[Commercial Break]

Back from the break, the "dream six-man tag match" that all of 30 minutes of build-up continued with Christian holding Rhino in a chinlock. Tenay thanked the tens of thousands who voted in the Styles or Rhino text messaging poll. Considering they're following "American Idol", which has millions of millions of people voting for their contest, Tenay just made the company sound completely minor league. Angle took a hot tag at 8:00 and gave the Tomko and Steiner a series of German suplexes. He then gave Christian a belly-to-belly suplex. The action broke down and Angle put Steiner in the Anklelock, but Tomko gave him a big boot. Rhino then gored Tomko, but Christian caught Rhino with the Unprettier. Joe then took Christian to the corner and gave him the Muscle buster. Steiner and Joe then faced off with Steiner giving him a belly-to-belly suplex. Angle then took a turnaround belly-to-belly suplex and Steiner put him in the Steiner Recliner, but Angle slipped out and hit the Olympic Slam. He followed with the ankle lock before Abyss hit the ring and jumped Angle to give us yet another No Contest in a main event prior to a PPV.

Angle and Abyss fought center ring before Abyss gave Angle the Black Hole Slam. The lights went down and up, then we saw two different Stings sting atop each entrance tunnel. Suddenly, the real Sting was in the ring standing behind Abyss. He attacked Abyss as the show faded to a video package complete with more heavy metal and screaming and yelling.

WINNERS: No Contest in 10:00. Just way too much happening in one match trying to sell a PPV in three days. The finishing sequence was fine to give viewers a taste of "non-stop action" before the PPV, but none of it mattered when the focus at the end was on Sting vs. Abyss. It just amazes me how horrible of a job they've done building up Joe these last four weeks, and they made matters worse by digging into the NWO bag-of-tricks for the "multiple Sting" trickery at the end. On a show that featured X Division wrestlers trying to imitate other wrestlers, it was only fitting that TNA's writers tried to imitate one of the most successful angles of the Monday Night Wars era, but completely botch it in the process by doing a five-minute show-closing angle in ten seconds. Conspiracy theorists who say Vince Russo is trying to sabotage TNA have new material to work with this week because 99 percent of wrestling fans watching this show and last week's show could have come up with better ideas to sell a PPV.
