shmups: ikaruga, r-type, etc.
I'd have to say that within how I voted, I'm including the "other" shooter genre of RGS {Run & Gun Shooters = Contra, Metal Slug, IKARI, Shock Troopers etc.} *I can see why 90% of ppl would choose VS. FIGHTING over all else, but to me there's nothing like doing the
1cc deal, or working up to it and getting damn close within the insanity of games like...
Gate of Thunder
Gunstar Heroes
Metal Slug 1-5
Shock Troopers 1 & 2
ALESTE: Full Metal Fighter Ellinor
Lords of Thunder
Strikers 1945 1 - Plus
Operation Code: VAPOR TRAIL
AREA 88 {UN Squadron}
Sonic Wings 1-3
Contra
Super Contra
Contra Spirits
Contra Hard Corps
Contra "SS"
Layer Section 1-2
Eliminate Down
Soldier Blade
Sengoku Blade {Ace 2}
Last Resort
Blazing Star
Gradius 1 - 5
...I could go on and on, but I'd run out of space to list all the games. *It's 2005, and I'm still honing my
SKILLZ on a lot of these games, on some going the
1cc route is now second nature, on others... it's just a blast finishing several stages without losing a life even if you continue three or four times in the last stages... it doesn't matter because if you can do that, it means in time you'll be able to dodge everything thrown at you. My youngest brother-in law John, who fell in love with the NEO:GEO {kid has good taste what can I say?} at first scoffed at some of the older stuff, telling me
"Dude you should play GTA and shit, this stuff is old."
well the kid changed his tune when I told him, "Play through Contra with me." That being on the Famicom/NES, and we powered it up. John lost lives left and right {and that was us in 2-Player}. Then I told him to play alone and use the 30 man code. By the time he got to the "Hyper Zone" he had 2 lives left. He just couldn't believe how hard/challenging the games could be. Then I powered up SHOCK TROOPERS and he shit watching me dodge seemingly everything, never taking a hit for two stages, blowing everything up in sight, and never continuing once until the last part ontop of the giant plane. After that, John and a few of his friends who wanted to see an NEO:GEO arcade looked at things in a different light. Sure, most ppl today will want all the 3-D BLING, but it takes time, effort and perserverance to master the SHOOTER/RGS genre, and the feeling you get from
Owning the game is about the same as the first time you busted a nut all over a chicks face and watched her gobble up the goo from the head of your penis.
