ok fanboys, here's your chance...

which genre typically offers the best/most replay? qualify your argument any way you see fit: 1cc, high-score, multiplayer, going to tournaments, etc. etc.

i vote fighters just because each new opponent can (theoretically) bring a new dimension to the game, as long as they aren't so far below your level that it's a waste of time of course.

Without a a doubt, fighters.

I play KOF98 almost daily (MVS cab on freeplay is something I can't resist), and Game Centers offer a huge variety of human opponents. And if people at an arcade all use the same strategies/characters, you can always go to some other arcade.

Also, there's always online play.

Shmups and vs. Fighters

They probabley make up 75-85% off all the games I own.

They both tend to appear very simple on the surface but with a little bit of time and practice they are some of the deepest games out there in terms of pure gameplay value.

The same could be said for a handful of other genres as well.

I also think alot of todays gamers aren't willing to put forth effort and practice games to aquire skill, they just want to beat it and move onto the next "big thing"

I often show my friends whatever shmup I'm currently playing and they say
"you mean people actually play shit like this" and I say something like "yeah and I can make it to the last stage on 1 credit with default settings"
Then they reply with "what a waste of time you fucking dork" Which makes it pretty obvious to me that they cant even comrhend the rewarding feeling that comes from "skill through effort"

To me its all about the replay value, why would I buy something only to rush through it and be finished with it by the end of the week? Hell I've been playing KOF 98 since its release day and I still play it at least once a week.

Fighters followed by shooters (Metal Slug, Contra).

I somehow find RPGs and Action/Adventure games quite addictive, but in a different way. it's like after few months from finishing one of these, I feel like going back to play it again. for example, last year I finished Shining Force 1. now I feel like playing that. same goes for SotN (which I 100%'ed many times), Final Fantasy 3, MGS1, ..... etc.

I never get tired of them.

shmups: ikaruga, r-type, etc.

I'd have to say that within how I voted, I'm including the "other" shooter genre of RGS {Run & Gun Shooters = Contra, Metal Slug, IKARI, Shock Troopers etc.} *I can see why 90% of ppl would choose VS. FIGHTING over all else, but to me there's nothing like doing the 1cc deal, or working up to it and getting damn close within the insanity of games like...

Gate of Thunder
Gunstar Heroes
Metal Slug 1-5
Shock Troopers 1 & 2
ALESTE: Full Metal Fighter Ellinor
Lords of Thunder
Strikers 1945 1 - Plus
Operation Code: VAPOR TRAIL
AREA 88 {UN Squadron}
Sonic Wings 1-3
Contra
Super Contra
Contra Spirits
Contra Hard Corps
Contra "SS"
Layer Section 1-2
Eliminate Down
Soldier Blade
Sengoku Blade {Ace 2}
Last Resort
Blazing Star
Gradius 1 - 5

...I could go on and on, but I'd run out of space to list all the games. *It's 2005, and I'm still honing my SKILLZ on a lot of these games, on some going the 1cc route is now second nature, on others... it's just a blast finishing several stages without losing a life even if you continue three or four times in the last stages... it doesn't matter because if you can do that, it means in time you'll be able to dodge everything thrown at you. My youngest brother-in law John, who fell in love with the NEO:GEO {kid has good taste what can I say?} at first scoffed at some of the older stuff, telling me "Dude you should play GTA and shit, this stuff is old."

well the kid changed his tune when I told him, "Play through Contra with me." That being on the Famicom/NES, and we powered it up. John lost lives left and right {and that was us in 2-Player}. Then I told him to play alone and use the 30 man code. By the time he got to the "Hyper Zone" he had 2 lives left. He just couldn't believe how hard/challenging the games could be. Then I powered up SHOCK TROOPERS and he shit watching me dodge seemingly everything, never taking a hit for two stages, blowing everything up in sight, and never continuing once until the last part ontop of the giant plane. After that, John and a few of his friends who wanted to see an NEO:GEO arcade looked at things in a different light. Sure, most ppl today will want all the 3-D BLING, but it takes time, effort and perserverance to master the SHOOTER/RGS genre, and the feeling you get from Owning the game is about the same as the first time you busted a nut all over a chicks face and watched her gobble up the goo from the head of your penis.

Shmups, based mainly on the fact that I would keep Radiant Silvergun over VF4 if I had to choose one game and one game only to play for the rest of my days.

Replay value = anything that's not story-driven/dependend, like fighters, shmups, platformers, dm fps games, etc.

RPGs and some action adventures have zero replay value IMO.

for me its rts games. followed closely by well done hack n slash type games. i can play these games for years if they are good.

then its prolly fps with well done multiplayer.

then shooters.

then fighters.

thing about fighters is, i can only handle them in small doses. i dont have the patience or attention span to learn all the 133t unbeatable combos and reversals and shit. ill take a cool looking button smasher or something simple like ss1/2 any day of the week.

Any well made competitive game has infinite replay value. It's not about genre for me, it's more about how well the actual product is put together.

I'm not big on Halo, but it was fun to get 4 people together for that for a few hours. It's got longevity if it's made good.

It's really hard to get bored of a good fighter. I see myself playing SF3 and KOF at least 20 years from now. Shooters don't get old really quick but it does happen.

RTS, Red alert 2 and Warcraft 3 rocked months of nights. I've never played starcraft at all though...

yeah i've never played any rts game for more than 10 minutes, so my examples were predictably weak. however, i was curious to see how those types of games compared to my favorites (fighters) in this regard.

Puzzle genre -- tetris, arkanoid, qix, etc.

These types of games always seem to be the most
addictive for me.

I saw "Tekken" and blindly voted. Just because it eats at kernow.

Fighters have lotsa replay value , even more than FPS because your range of opponents comes from online, in person, AND in the arcade. Too bad nobody plays then anymore hardly.

Shooters have some replay, but it's possible to memorize patterns and master a game so it goes only so far. Modern shooters have lotsa fancy shit with built in replay value by virtue of high scores.

Puzzles are up there too cuz there's always chains to master and high scores to get. They change alot with 2-4PLs. Too bad there's no real online play to speak of.

RPGs even have some replay cuz there's new story arcs and always more shit to find in the game.

So it depends.

RTSs and Fighters. The competition in these genres is insane, more than enough to warrant you playing again just to feel good after beating your punk ass friend or something. Or when you get murdered by a pro, hahahaha.

God this is a tough choice.

I select fighters, but by a smidgen. The reason is that fighter can remain unchanged and I keep on playing. FPS, RTS new updates are needed for me to keep coming back. With a fighter, I don't need new fighters and BG's to keep the game fresh and fun. I just play my friends, the 'cades, and just practice combos. KOF98, SSII, and VF4 are good examples of this for me.

Hack-n-slash... well, basically Dynasty/Samurai Warriors games.

I dunno, theres just something about them that compells me to keep playing.
On paper they seem like the dullest, most repetative game ever made, but actually playing them is a fantasticly satisfying experience. I guess its all about levelling your character up so they can take down a gang of 50 grunts in just a few swings.
Going through each characters story, plus getting each branching story-path adds immense replayability.
And the regular updates to the franchise keeps things from going stale too.

Fighters have a great replay value as long as you have other people to play against. Vs. CPU they lose quite a bit to me.

Good golf games have the most IMO. I can play NTM or any of the TW's for days on end.

I voted fighters if you got more than 1 person playing (with about equal skills so 1 person doesn't get too frustrated).

MMORPGs have some insane "replay" value, or rather, the constant need to level up, increase skill or find that ultra rare dood-dad. Hell I spent over *6* months of real time in game over a period of 3 years. In retrospect, I could have done something amazing with those 6 months instead of paying $$/month to play that stupid game.

Music/rhythm genre games have some great replayability if you like that sort of thing. If not, they are just stupid :)
