for some reason, i dunno why.. but the past couple of days my computer's been freezing/rebooting by itself.

so far i've actually witnessed it happening while trying to burn a cd, run FlashFXP, and while playing a game.... and one time i turned off my monitor[but left the computer on] and when i tried to turn it back on it didn't do anything and i had to reboot.

i'm running WinXP SP2 w/ the latest updates. as far as internet security goes i'm using Mozilla Firefox[no IE at all], Norton Anti-Virus 2k5, SpyRemover & Ad-Aware Pro.

and yes, i've tried running chkdsk & defragging my HD's.

anyone have an idea?

thanks!

Sure, i am subject to that:

If i am connected to internet via my network card then when trying to access an IDE drive outside the main onboard disk controler (with my RAID card or a USB drive) my computer freezes or even reboots.

It has definitly to do with networking, as when i am connected and try to use my TV card, then the PC freezes one second every 2 seconds even after shutting down the TV program.

My ethernet card is an SMC Ether Power 2

had a similar problem four months ago.
after making sure it was no software problem
(same error occurred with my backup system),
I checked the hardware and it turned out the ram had gone bad.
no idea why since i don't overclock or anything.
got a replacement -> problem solved

get yourself some ram from a friend and run this program over night.
if your pc hasn't crashed the next morning, it was the ram.

Uhm, before going to get RAM from someone/somewhere, shouldn't he run that program FIRST, THEN go out and figure out where to get RAM if it really is fucked?

It could also be possible that your power supply is failing. PC's that aren't getting a steady, adequate supply of power do crazy things and reboot.

Sounds like a power supply problem. (either it's faulty or there's a loose connection somewhere)

welp, the ram is fine and the power supply is fine.
i can only boot into safe mode.
for some reason, even though it's an Athlon XP 3000, my comp now thinks the CPU is running at 1.2GHz & it keeps displaying the wrong time/date. [i managed to get this far by removing & putting the mobo battery back in]. whenever i try to fix things in the BIOS it just freezes up/reboots all over again[safe mode won't even work].. i can only even get into safe mode if i do the battery remover thing.
i guess this means i'll have to get a new mobo.
:(

alright, check this out.. what's going on here:

all the hd's, cd/dvd drives, ram, vid card, audio card, power supply, etc all seem to be working just fine.
i can get the system to boot windows normally... and at first i noticed it changed the time/date to Jan 01, 2003.. although when i put the correct time/date & rebooted it kept those settings just fine...

however, when i still try to make any changes in the BIOS it just keeps freezing as usual... thought maybe the battery died.. but when i pull out the battery & wait awhile for the default settings to kick back in & then put the battery back, it'll then load windows fine again... hhmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!

anyone have any idea just what the heck is actually wrong with this mobo?

it's a GigaByte K7 Triton Series "GA-7N400 Pro". and the CPU on it is an Athlon XP 3000.

no overclocking, right?
is the bios up to date?

edit: the board seems to generate a lot of heat

correct. no overclocking, board is up to date.. and the odd thing about the 'heat' issue is that i have good cross ventilation in this condo & 7 fans in my case all running at max speed.

Is your shit full of dust and shit?

That could be causeing problems...

Crack it open and take it all the way apart...... Ram, PCI/AGP cards, proccessors, cabels...

Get all the dust out...

That fixed all my problems.

Check the processor fan is working, if not it overheats and can give those symptoms. Some PC manufactuers/builders skimp and use shit quality fans, the bearings fuck up in no time.
