I like to melt out with a hot iron, trim with a Stanley knife then file down.

Have a damp cloth ready to remove any molten plastic on the iron tip, then be sure to tin it quickly. Its more practical than drilling.

Toddy I didn't mean to say that you suggested something stupid, it's only that those sticks are pretty expensive and it's not nice to fuck them up so I'd say better take your time when doing such things. At least that's what i think...but what do I know, Trevor may not give a damn about cosmetics and just wants to play asap.

I would like these to look perfect cause they cost me a lot of money, I will be using a female DB connector like the one in the pic above so ill have to screw it to the outside of the stick

but yeah i can wait a while if you dont mind posting it here when your ready :)

The "best" tool to use would be a DB panel punch. I know Greenlee makes them. Unfortunately they cost around $400. :help:

Usually I trace the holes first with a stencil then cut the corners and middle with a unibit drill bit. Then I just shape it with a file. Only issue is the plastic may not have that machine smooth look, but that could probably be fixed with a quick shot with a heat gun.

DON'T MELT THE PLASTIC. YOU'RE NUTS.

I agree, maybe im a being a little hasty with these things.
As long as the starting holes are kept well within the DB form, melting is easier than drilling and achieves the same results Ive found.

Didnt meen to seem sarcastic btw  ;)

Front-mounting connectors is easier than rear-mounting them: even if you don't make a perfectly polished hole the connector frame will hide the imperfections. You could do as follows:

take a frame for PC connectors like this and use it as a template to mark the hole outline with a stanley knife (better than a pen). Next take a dremel and drill 4 holes near the corners of the outline and use a jigsaw like this to cut the plastic from hole to hole going as close to the edges of the outline as possible. At this point it's all a matter of smoothing the hole with sand paper until the connector fits the hole. Put tape all around the hole to prevent scratches.

As a totally different alternative for your project, you could remove the small PCB inside the DC stick and make an external adapter out of it and replace the original cord with a PC one that will plug onto the supergun or the adapter. I think this is a better solution because you don't have to ruin the stick and you'll have only one cable coming out of the stick.

This was pretty much what I said. The jigsaw you refer to is actually called a "keyhole saw". Just so people looking for it can find it easier.

Here's what I did, which corresponds to what MKL stated:

Just a quick question for whoever has the answer: what color wires on the joystick wiring correspond to what directions? I was thinking about throwing a DB15 connector onto my Agetec stick, but I kinda hit that snag when I was looking at the guts of it today. Thanks in advance for the help!

Very meticulous work, MKL. I am highly impressed.

Just two questions: 1) Does the VMU still work? I assume not, since I don't see the connectors attached anywhere; and 2) Where do you get the DB15 connectors with that black finish? Thanks!

The person I made it for didn't care about it.

Shops in my town. In the US Mouser carries something similar:

I think you just have to tighten those bolts to pull the two halfs together...

right finally got round to taking the pics.

This is a pic of the DB15 connector on the back of the stick

3-picture1.jpg

here is a pic of the back of the DB15 connector

3-picture3.jpg

here is a pic of where i had to drill a hole so i could feed the wires through

3-picture5.jpg

heres a pic of the inside of the stick (bit of a jumble i know :emb: but hey)

3-picture2.jpg

heres a pic of how i spliced the wires for the DB connector onto the original wiring BTW there not my hands ;)

3-picture4.jpg

And finally heres a pic of the stick in all its glory (dosnt it look sexy)

3-picture6.jpg

in the end it was quite easy all i done was splice the wires for the DB connector on to all the original wiring, drill a hole so i could feed it through and cut a hole for the DB connector (this was the toughest bit) anyway hope yoou like it
