Yesterday i changed the battery on a 10+ year old
super street fighter 2 x board from coinopexpress.
The amazing thing is,all seals were unbroken, the game still working.
The old battery was from 01/94.
Counter is on 24749!
I measured voltage(yes,mkl i've got a mulimeter now)and
it was still 3,7v after all this time.
Anyone else got an older board thats still working?

I had a blue 1, but sold it to CEX in London just last week.

My Super Street Fighter 2 is still chugging along - but I'm scared that it'll die!!

I heard that if you keep it in regular use then battery recharges, is this true??

I have no clue when these three boards were made etc.......(I recently sold them)
But all three still had the original batteries in them and still worked..

I did periodically plug them into the Candy Cab and play them. Say twice a month..(if that matters)

The main reason I sold them was because I don't play them much and didn't want to deal with the battery issues....

The person that bought them said he was replacing the batteries on each though...

It's not true.
At least i think so.

When you play the game the battery is not used.
Therefore much played games live longer than ones that are hardly used.
When its off the decrypt-algorithm is being kept alive through a 3,6v maxell lithium bat.
It is said that this bat lives max 6years.
Super is from '93,its about high time to change.

I have an X-Men Children of the Atom (1994) and it is still working but my Marvel Vs. Capcom Clash of Super Heroes is dead one year ago. However I have got an Razoola's suicide fix for this game and now I can play it again. I guess battery is not a problem now.

Hrmm as much as I have a fist full of early(ish) CPS-2 boards that have all been okay when purchased, my most amazing suicide battery survival story would be my CPS-1 copies of "Captain Commando" and "3 Wonders" both from 1991 and both original, untouched since rolling off the production line. I've replaced the batteries now, but I just couldn't believe that they fired up after being listed on da Bay as "untested" boards and buying them fully expecting to have to break out the soldering iron and have some EPROMs reprogrammed!! Happy day n all dat!! :tickled:

Maybe these 3v coin batteries last longer than the 1/2 AA's, anybody confirm this??

Yes, I've also found CPS-1 boards from 1991 that still worked with the original battery and have yet to change it on my King of Dragons PCB.

A confirmation comes from the Q-Sound CPS-1 games (Punisher, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, etc.): besides the coin battery these boards have on the Q-Sound PCB the same red Maxell 1/2AA battery as CPS-2. I've seen 5 of these boards so far and the pattern was always the same: still working coin battery, dead 1/2AA battery.

Oldest battery I ever seen on a working CPS2 game was just last week. It was from a dnd tower of doom and the battery had a date stamp of 07/93 on it and the board was working just fine. Of course that was until I snapped the battery off to make it run suicide free :)

Other intresting facts would be one pcb I had that took well over 24 hours to die after I removed the battery. For those intrested why this happens its basically because the double cap at location EXC1 on the pcb continues holding a charge even after the battery is gone. It's normally has enough to last between 03 to 5 hours. but there are cases where it lasts longer. If you want to kill a board instantly simply remove the battery and short that double cap.

How can you make a board run 'suicide free'? I've been so worried because of this thread that I've been considering selling my board...

Please reply!!!

I've got an original Quiz & Dragons CPS1 which is still going with original battery and it very rarely gets powered up. Kind of makes me nervous because no fix has been made for this game yet, although the knowledge is out there...

I seem to remember a cps2 board of mine giving me problems (ie wouldn't boot) for several _days_ once I cut the battery off and put phoenix roms in it. Combination of suicide free roms and powered secuirty curcuit problematic?

Open the sucker up, prize the program roms off the board and post them to Raz along with a very reasonable fee. Recieve roms back, cut the battery off the board, insert roms, enjoy. ;)

@djspringate
Its a very good game, don't sell it!
Just open the gameboard up with a torx security t-20 screwdriver.
Get yourself a maxell 3,6volt lithium axial battery.
Not very expensive.
Go to razoola's
http://cps2shock.retrogames.com/
page to see all the details.

@Razoola
So shortcutting plus and minus is an instant kill?

Is there any info on how long a cps3 can survive without battery?
I changed one just yesterday.
When i took the battery off,the screen turned black for about 3 minutes.
With the new battery after a reset, the game booted again.

Hey,

Check this out  . Please forgive me if this has already been posted already in some other thread? I too am going to go the Raz route on my CPS II games soon, well, after I save up and buy his current Uni Bios and SSVS!! Going to go a little deeper into debt, but hell, this game will be worth the minor set back :smirk: .

As far as CPS3 is concerned I think as soon as you remove the battery the cart dies. Methods of changing the batery include doing it while the cart is in the motherboard and the game is powered on and running, see http://members.lycos.co.uk/dangspot/ for details.

The batteries WILL NOT recharge by playing the game.
Lithium batteries will hold their voltage almost constant basically until they die...

Now about CPS3:

You can safely change the batteries with the game running (beware though, there are 2 types of CPS3 carts, one of them needs a trick or you'll kill the game). I've done both methods here (SF3 2nd Impact) and JoJo's, they all work fine :)
