Once and for all... *Did We {Mankind} go to the moon or not?

As the decades pass by the evidence of whether or not we went or did not go keeps coming up on all these Specialty TV shows, shit like NOVA or even The History Channel. On one hand it wouldn't take all that much compulational power to move a staged rocket into orbit on a vector path to the moon... on the other hand you've got scientists stating there's some sort of Radiation Belt that nothing we have could stop and Humans would be killed if enough of it got in their system. Then there's the whole moon walk/hop thing and how it could've been a damned "Set" somewhere in the white sands desert???

What are your personal thoughts on this and why? Did Mankind {America} actually beat the U.S.S.R. to the moon, or was it all an elborate hoax that the Astronaughts had no choice for national solidarity to be "in on" to save face that the Ruskies had one upped us? ---That the Apollo 13 incident might have been the actual attempt to go there for the first time after the cover up, but then shit happend and then it played into the "Official B.S." ??? GWB talks of setting up a moon base, my question is why wasn't this done sooner if we really were there? Seems to make more sense that building some International Space Station... so when we get there all I know is that the American Flag better be there, some foot prints and that Lunar Golf Kart otherwise it was all bullshit. ---I want to believe we went there but the more time passes, the more I think it was all just a face saving propagandized bunch of crap.

If it was a hoax, waaay too many people were involved for no one to have said anything by now. Realistically, there's no way for such a secret to have been kept. The person to break that story would have virtually nothing to fear in this day and age.

The only reason Deep Throat's been kept quiet all these years is because only a handful of people know. For the Moon Landing to have been faked it would've involved dozens, if not hundreds of people.

Still though, whenever we get there again, if those things aren't there then we'll know it's bullshit. To me setting up a Moon Base for a Science Colony, Military Bases and "Refuling Station" for future missions to MARS should've been priority one. The fact that we just stopped going with no intentions of some kind for colonization possibly below the lunar surface is just bewildering. Personally, I waver on this issue often. I often think that yeah, back in the 60s we did put a man on the moon and after that kicked the idea of doing anything else up there to the curb because 1-upping the Russians were all we cared about. "Forget moonbases, we beat the commies! Let's pack it up, boys!"

Then on the other hand, I am distrustful of men in power as they can easily manipulate/control information/dis-information (not just in government, but in all areas).

I havent found any information that would sway me in either direction,so I'm guess I'm still riding the fine line. But I have to say there were a coupleof beautiful pics of the earth as seen from the moon that were quite impressive.

I once had this quote as a sig in a newsgroup because I thought it was kinda funny, but I guess at the same time provides some thought....

And jaydubnb, I never heard anyone try to deny that we had such technologies back then. Anyway, bringing comunication to the masses and computers to the masses is a lot crazier than keeping a single specifically designed piece of machinery running properly. :p

Personally, I doubt we did, that doesn't mean I believe not, but at the same times it does not mean I do believe we actually landed.

Many documentaries and specials show a lot of "proof" that the American moon landing is nothing but the biggest hoax ever, and most of the arguments that are given to backup this are incredibly strong and valid, still... it sounds like something TOO immense.

In the other hand, certain people from my family are very good friends with actual astronauts who "landed" on the moon, and doubting them isn't something easy, so... it is hard to make a decision.

Saying we didn't land on the moon is on par with saying that the Holocaust never occured.

...and as for the question at hand: What's wrong with questioning the validity of having gone to the moon? Stuff like the Vanaken Raditation Belt has come up more than once, where even today's heat panels {supposedly} couldn't absorb that amount of radiation in space... so we're to believe that 1960's technology could do better? If we did in fact go to the moon for nothing more than a dick measuring contest with IVAN, then it was stupid to do it in the first place. By now we could've been living on the moon. I go back and forth with it myself. Though I voted NOPE just because we've seen the levels of complexity are the disinformation given to the public at large.

neil armstrong, buzz aldrin, michael collins....why don't we hunt any one of them down and ask if the moon landing is a hoax or not? if it's such a hoax, if it's such a lie, if all of it is just a piece of wool over our eyes then how is it that the very fabric of outer space isn't a lie? how is it that outerspace isn't just a piece of black leather with holes in it where specks of the great daylight shine through at night? You can come up with what looks compelling evidence for just about anything. If it was a real scandal to be taken seriously, though, you wouldn't have to search specifically for shows and information designed to doubt it. I mean, mass media would just kill to break a story like this. With all the money tied up in media and TV ratings, you'd think that someone other than a conspiracy theory show on Sci-Fi would have broke the story by now...

I believe without question that we made it. As Bobak said, there were just too many people involved. As for the WHY we didn't go back, you can blame the enormous expense involved, combined with a change in priorities in NASA and the government as a whole. From the perspective of NASA, the moon wasn't the only object that needed to be observed more closely. From the perspective of government funding, several domestic and foreign matters were given higher priority over the space program.

Really Merc, why the hell did you bother bringing this tired topic up again? The last one went quite poorly, and as someone else already said, it won't ever be settled definitively.

Well the boards were a bit slow, and this is something that I always find a bit interesting to see the different views ppl have and why. It isn't all that unlikely, my next door neighbor was directly related to neil armstrong so I saw him a few times growing up (forget the exact relationship between them I was 4-5 after all ;) ) + didn't they do a study that suggusted that everyone is only 7 people away (as in friend of an aquatience of a friend....) It isn't at all rare to know someone who knows someone important.


Also on topic, I am on the fence about the landing, (it is fun to believe in conspericy anyway ;) ) one thing I would like to point out is that if you where faking a moon landing wouldn't you build a much cooler lander... I mean that thing sucks...

Yeah that's a good point. I can link myself to a lot of people that way. There are also a lot of celebrities in this world. My dad dated Chrissy Hynde from the Pretenders in college. He also was at a party with John Elway once. My great aunt shook hands with Bill Clinton and Al Gore during a political thanks party (and there's an autographed photo of it) My uncle was a news anchor for a while. Etc etc. Doesn't everyone have similar connections? I mean mine aren't the type where I could talk to these people (except the uncle) but ya know.

UFOes (in the strictest sense of the term) have been seen by people forever. Alexander the Great claimed to have been attacked by "flying shields" that shot rays of light at his army, ancient India had their Vimanas (flying war machines with seemingly atomic capabilities -- pretty funky read) and I've read of many sightings in remote places like the Congo. Heh, I guess there is some bias as the documentaries focus on modern, "civilized" stories most of the time.
