Holy shit...that has to be the most expensive DVD box set to ever be released.
No, not really. There are more expensive R2 box sets out there. Try finding the Hokuto no Ken TV set or Urusei Yatsura set to name a couple.
Besides, Tenchi is way overrated anyways. They should've stopped after the original OVA series... but of course, they had to milk it, and milk it, and milk it..........
I'm a Tenchi fan. I seriously thought about buying that set. Why don't I? Because I already have all the shows in the set, plus the OVA was the only REALLY good part, along with the 3rd movie. The 2 TV series (Universe/Space and Tokyo) were kinda... lame IMO.
All that stuff you get is damn cool, especilally the purple flag thing.
The other reason I wouldn't get it is because Ryoko isn't Ryoko without Petrea Burchard (English VA). I know it's odd for me to say I like the ENG dub better than the Japanese, but on this one, I do. I only watch Tenchi dubbed.
Im a fan of Tenchi Muyo and the first movie. Universe and the third movie are ok to, but not great. Tokyo just plain blew chunks :oh_no:
The price of that DVD set is ridiculously insane. I mean really, thats just ludicrous. :eek_2:
i'm sure the bootleg Hong Kong release will be cheaper. :angry:Quote:

That is 1 amazing set, I thought it was a US release then I saw region 2 and was like "figures":oh_no: :oh_no: :oh_no: :oh_no:
What's with this love for the third movie? It sucked!
I would love to get that set, but for that price? God damn! That's expensive!
Right from the source:Quote:

"But they're Region 2 Discs!" you say? Well not to worry English speaking otakus! Of the 25 discs in this set, all of them except the 2 bonus discs have either English audio or English subtitles which means you don't have to know any Japanese to enjoy this set. ALSO NOTE: You will need either a Regionless or a DVD player that specifically plays Region 2 DVDs in order to watch these!
Haha, you would be my hero. Better update my sig.Quote:

I'd buy it for sure if I didn't have it on LD (the superior format). Well, I don't have Tokyo or the 3rd movie... but it's something I think I can live without. :tickled:
Man... this was the show that got me into anime, though!
The OVA on Cartoon Network didn't really get me started on Anime, but it did kick me into high gear so to speak (and wanting an unmolested version helped :D).Quote:

And Chuplayer, just because you don't like the 3rd movie, doesn't mean it's not any good. So it's not your cup of tea, that's fine.
Lets Gekiga In- I saw they had the English tracks on them, but I already own all of that, minus the extras and the cool box, and considering the expense, I'm skipping it. It would be cool to own if I were still the Tenchi freak I was 3-4 years ago, but I've since seen better.
Although, you guys say it's "super expensive," at 25 discs, at $800, that's only $32 a DVD. $3 more expensive than the most expensive MSRP on Anime DVDs. Doesn't sound that bad to me honestly...
Actually, now that I think about it, I may actually order that. It's a one of a kind, once in a lifetime deal... and only $32 a DVD...
I am a freak, but damn, that is REALLY REALLY tempting...
Nick- If I order it, I'll be sure to use your link :D
I didn't fight the temptation.
Nick, you gotta love me. I ordered it using your link.
Fuck it, it's gonna be cool to own that. I'm sure if I don't like it I can sell it for a pretty penny on eBay, plus the DTS Japanese tracks will be cool to own where applicable...
Man, that's some serious money. I actually only like the first Tenchi TV series and the first movie, I couldn't get into anything after that. I didn't care for Tokyo or Universe. That box set is pretty damn sweet though, too bad it's more expensive than almost anything I own :annoyed:
@ slerch: I love the dub on Tenchi too ;) I actually have been watching alot more dubs since I got married, and I'm finding that alot of newer releases actually have damn good dubs. I try and watch both the sub and dub on almost all of my anime, but I don't always get around to it. In fact, as I type this, Love Hina is playing in the room, and it's the dub. While Kitsune's VA sucks ass, the rest of the cast is actually pretty good!
Q-
I'll take your word on the dubs. The ones I've watched recently I have not enjoyed at all. X dub comes to mind. I just can't get into the dubs.Quote:

And I don't care how good someone tells me the Sakura Taisen dubs are, I flat out refuse to watch them. It's the same thing with Vandread. I saw some of Vandread dubbed and well... it's nowhere near the quality as the Japanese IMO, as the Japanese Dita makes the show.
And as you already know, I am free to waste money on crazy stuff. :D
I like it, but not that damn much. Sheesh.
I do. In a very non-homosexual way... not that there's anything wrong with that! :tickled:Quote:

As it stands, I'm weakening too. If they'd just sell the damn things out...!
Oh, and since if got some Sakura Taisen fans (to say the least) in this thread, are the anime series worth watching? I just remember them getting a lukewarm response... but I'd imagine playing the games while watching them would make me appreciate it more...?
The only Tenchi I've seen so far had been the first and second OVA. The Shin Tenchi Muyo!, from what little I've watched, had been pretty bad, lazy and uninspiring.
700 is nothing. The DBZ boxsets were over 1,000 retail, so were the Slam Dunk sets.Quote:

That is a damn rip off too, all it looks like they did was package the normal R2 retail discs together, which are all available here WITH ENGLISH subtitles on all the discs.
IMO the only tenchi worth a damn is the original 13 episode OVA, the rest is crap (much like ranma 1/2).
Glad to know there aren't any homosexual overtones there.Quote:

As far as Sakura Taisen, I got the original OVAs back in the day, prior to having played any of the games. I enjoyed them for what they were, but they weren't super spectacular. I started in on the TV series prior to playing the games and finished it up as well, before playing them that is. The TV series was OK as well, nothing spectacular, but not bad either.
I then bought the ST collection on the DC and started rewatching the original OVA and the TV series. I definitely have a much greater appreciation for the series. It's gone from OK to great in my eyes. The characters in the OVAs don't feel as fleshed out as they should be, but that's because I don't think it was really intended on being watched without having had some exposure to the games. The TV series, however, does an OK, but not great, job fleshing out the characters and of course, having played at least the first game gives you a MUCH greater appreciation for the show and the games IMO.
The closing song where Kanna sings the theme song is the best part of the show (the TV series) :D It always manages to make me smile, regardless of my mood. Thankfully Dash no Chris is getting the OST for me :D
The second set of OVAs should be watched after playing the 2nd game (which I haven't gotten into much yet) as they occurr prior to Ohgami leaving for Paris.
So if you are even a slight ST fan, the TV series and the OVAs are worth watching. If you're not an ST fan or haven't played the games, and you are looking for a show light on character development with some of the best Japanese seiyuu available, then ST is a good buy. If you are none of the above, stay away.

Tenchi TV had it's moments, but I can see where people are going with this thread. Tokyo was just a shock when I first saw it... having not watched anything Tenchi for a few years, maybe I'd find it easier to get into.Quote:

Ranma... LOVED the first TV season... started getting a little restless halfway through the 2nd... we'll see what 3 and 4 bring. I mean, sure, with a 7 season series you can't stay on one subject forever, but these Happosai plots (for example) just aren't doing it for me.
When should I watch the OVAs, though? Just wanna make sure all of the characters have been properly introduced before diving in...
lol! Nick, I just sent slerch this link to read over earlier, so here it is for you too :)Quote:

My Sakura Taisen TV review! Keep in mind that it is my first ever anime review, and my first writing of any decent length in years. I'm not completely happy with the way it turned out, in fact I don't like it too much at all, but here it is anyway. I reviewed the entire series instead of just 1 disc at a time. Hope that gives you a little insight and helps you out a bit :)
Q-
ha, don't watch after season 2 then, i can't remember which season it was, 3 or 4 (or both), but the entire damn season was nothing but someone finding a cure for the curse, and by the end of the episode they lost it, repeat that for 20 episodes and you get the idea. They did the same thing with Happosai, pretty much a whole season of crap with him.Quote:

The only ranma worth a damn, are the OVAs, the first tv series and the two movies. I just wish viz didn't charge so damn much for their DVD boxsets when they're still using VHS masters, you can tell this because subs for signs and other things are hardcoded into the video.
You should watch the first OVA prior to anything else (I assume we are back on the subject of Sakura Taisen?.). Then watch the TV series. Then watch the second set of OVAs ("Return of the Spirit Warriors" and "Wedding Bells" are the US names I think). You could theoretically watch the OVAs first anyway, but the time line is the TV series then the above 2 mentioned OVAs... the original OVA was a highly compressed version of the first game... sort ot but not really, if that makes sense. They are all pretty much self contained, but make more sense in the context of playing the games. The first OVA and the TV series sort of mesh with the first game. The second set of OVAs mesh with the end of ST 2 and beginning of ST 3, sort of a side story if you will.Quote:

And don't forget the movie, which falls in after everything else. :D
If you were talking about the Ranma OVA, I say watch it anytime. :D
You've come so far, and gotten so fanatical in such a short period of time ;) Good summary of the right order to watch the DVDs in. One thing though Nick, after you watch the first OVA set, don't get discouraged. It is relatively weak, especially if you haven't played the games, and the sound is total shit. It sounds like it was recorded underwater, but it's worth it to stick with it!Quote:

It should also be noted that there is the OTHER set of OVAs that Funimation has that have yet to see the light of day on R1 DVDs...
After playing the first game and then watching the first OVA, I have to say I actually enjoyed the first OVA... does that soil me? :emb:
It doesn't do a whole lot for a person on it's own though... ADV has a set that collects all three of the OVAs they have the rights to, BTW Nick.
Yes yes yes yes yes!Quote:

I don't think the TV series should be watched before playing the games. It's really more of a "prequel" but it gives you the wrong idea of what the games are like. The TV series is much "darker". So are the OVAs (except the last one, based in Paris, which is IMO the best). They are good watching once you've played at least the first game though.
Since I'm pretty sure you know a little Japanese, there is no reason NOT to play the games (if you have the money that is). I don't think they'd be hard to play without any knowledge of Japanese, but I couldn't imagine playing them without the knowledge I do have.
I didn't really have much to be said that wasn't said already, do I?

Time is an issue this semester, but I'm also wondering how far my Japanese can take me on this one. Generally speaking, I can understand/answer most of the questions, play the battles without a hitch, and get a halfway decent idea of what's going on in the "story", but I feel like I'm cheating myself if I don't understand 100%...
I'd imagine there's translation guides available, but then I feel like I'm cheating for falling back on english! :tickled:
The first time I played ST I had to guess my way through, but the more I play it, the more I can understand. And the "feeling" that I've learned is just fantastic.
Wait... 5 isn't out yet... are you messing with me?

Nick- there are translation guides available. If you really think it's a problem, play the game and if you're stuck on something, like you can't figure out what's going on, THEN go for the guide. It's not really cheating if you want to know what's going on.
And no, 5 hasn't been released yet. Nick must have picked up the remake of 1 on the PS2...
The Ranma 1/2 series kicks tons of ass, IT was the series to get me into collecting anime vhs back in 94 and is one of my favorite dvd's sets that i own on dvd.Quote:

that is one nice collectable but I also have the ova set the universe and tokyo sets plus the 3 movies... Tenchi kicks ass but to warrant a purchase for a box and a bunch of the same dvd's no way jose ......
:p that is a ton of money that is transmission fixing for my car.
Besides I heard that a new tenchi series was coming soon (not that GX BS) but a new series.. Also wtf did they ever continue the ova story at all woth the weird ass alien people?
Hey who is Sasami's voice actor? My gf loves Sasami and I recognized her voice as Shun's sister from Gate Keepers
and the girl you speak with every once in awhile in FFX.:tickled:
Are you talking about the Japanese voice actress or the English voice actress? If it's the Japanese one the voice actress is Chisa Yokoyama. I think the English voice actess is Sharon something or Karen something. Maybe it was Amanda something. I never watched the dub past the first one.Quote:

Heck, 5 isn't even the next game to come out. The next installment is Sakura Taisen: Monogatari (Mysterious Paris), and it comes out March 18th in Japan. Unfortunatly they have taken out the battle sequences, and made it just a text based adventure game, retaining the L.I.P.S. system of course. This sucks for English only gamers like me, as the FAQs will help, but the game will still be really one dimensional since there is no action involved :(
At least we will be getting Sakura Taisen Action sometime hopefully late in the year, and most probably a US release as well! About freaking time SEGA came around and released a Sakutai game somewhere other than in Japan  It never made any sense to me, that with as big of a following as the Sakutai series has, no game has ever been released outside of Japan??!! Doesn't SEGA see the potential market, even just from the hardcore SEGA and Sakutai following? Oh well, at least they are coming around because of the Sakura Taisen World Project :D
Q-
I was wondering about the US release of the ST stuff. I know that Sega Japan made an announcement a LONG LONG (2002 maybe) time ago about it, but I haven't heard anything on it since. Anyone know if this is even still planned? I remember reading that they thought the ST 5 action game would be the US's first taste of ST, but since it hasn't even been released in Japan yet, and with the other PS2 game out and another one coming, all I can think is, WHAT THE HELL IS SEGA WAITING FOR!?
Of course, if Sega dubs the game in English and doesn't give me a Japanese option, I'm not buying. ST just isn't ST without the Japanese Seiyuu doing the voices, I'm sorry. As good as people claim the Anime English dub is, I just can't watch it in English.
That is one expensive boxset, yikes!
I picked up the US boxset of Tenchi Muyo when that came out, very enjoyable series (and I also did like the dub as well :)).
Yeah, they made the announcement in July of 2002 about the English releases.Quote:

I for one would definitly play the games in English. You are right, the seiyuu for the Sakutai games/anime in Japan are some of the best I have ever heard, but I've been waiting too damn long to not play a US release of a Sakutai game!
And slerch....just watch the first episode of the TV series in dub  It is nowhere near as good as the Japanese voice acting , but all in all it is not that terrible either. I commend the job the US VAs did. They had an impossible act to follow, but they pulled out something halfway decent, not a bad final product IMO ;)

The reason it wasn't "funny" is because it was the final planned (though that has changed) Tenchi animation, so they sort of closed up the whole "who do you pick" thing... although, reading about it, evidently that wasn't really the end and we'll get to find out who he chose in the new OVA that's being made.
Have you watched episodes 14 and 15 that have been released already? I personally liked it, but a lot of people think it is too over the top (STM like).Quote:

I had really hoped that they retained more of the original OVA character design, the current one looks like a hybrid between the OVA designs and the Shin Tenchi Muyo designs, which I abhorred.Quote:
