BMU if you could get some kind of executive decision from Shawn or something to post a link to his isp's website/email I'd send in my support. This isn't right, it's bad enough that I can't look at Neo-geo.com at school (well I can get around the software lol..., but it's the principle.), but it to be banned entirely from a country?! I can't imagine not being able to go to my favorite website for reasons beyond my control.

Sounds perfectly normal. Your government bans whole belief systems, that sounds even more extreme to me.

The ISPs are following the (fucking retarded) mandate of the government, if I recall correctly. Contacting them would accomplish little, if anything.

What particular belief systems are you reffering to? I agree that censorship is commonplace, but that doesn't make what happened here in the UAE any less extreme.

I can't seem to find it now, but apparently he found that his site was also banned in the UAE

If I remember correctly, it depended on how the internet was being accessed in the UAE too- like there were some UAE access providers that the government would block, but there were some who were not affected. Like internet 'cafes' or something similar were blocked, but some home users weren't affected (or vice versa)- sorry for my spotty memory.

So, I'm assuming that NG.com is probably in a similar situation.

Of course there is censorship in Scotland, and prohibition organisations the status quo does not tolerate. My point was that aligning censorship to communism is about as stupid a point as you can make.

Rail against censorship, but don’t try and fix it as an idea to a single government system.

When people think of Communism they generally just think of a particularly oppressive government. I think that's what was meant by that comment. Also, I don't think most people would agree that all oppression is equal. If a government stops a group who believe that it's their right to kill all brunettes, then most won't see that as very oppressive, just necessary. If a government breaks into someone's house and shoots them on the spot for not holding the same religion as the president, then most would consider that very oppressive. We can argue over whether blocking internet sites is very oppressive or not, but I guess some people think so, and maybe it's rightly so. I mean, this place has a certain culture involved with it, and not allowing citizens to even experience that seems pretty damn oppressive to me. Of course, any form of government can do such things, but maybe to some it's all shades of what they call "communism". I doubt many people really know what the word is supposed to mean anyway.

I'm not arguing about what is opressive, what is 'good' opression or what is 'bad' opression, I'm saying that linking communism and censorship in that way is such sloppy thinking that I couldn't let it pass without comment.

My later point was saying that there are ideas that our society cannot countenance accepting (suicide bombing for example) that parts other societies seem to embrace. We censor one batch of ideas, other people censor another batch of ideas. I really don't think it's a very complicated idea.

Absolutely, I've no where argued against censorship because it plays a very useful role in controlling change and maintaing the status quo, an idea that runs counter to the prevailing culture must be hugely powerful to prevail against it, especially in the face of censorship.

That's why I'm slow to criticise the UAE for a piece of censorship which is clearly in line with the core beliefs of a Muslim society and loathe to alighn censorship with communism.

I have a friend who lives in the UAE. I don't think he even knows what a Neo-Geo is, though. ;)
