n64? hmm

Well, since I unexpectedly got a "ltd edition" n64 for my birthday, I thought I'd pick up some classics for it.

so kernow headed into town, on a bare cart rampage:

Pilotwings 64 : £4.95
Lylat Wars : £4.95
F-Zero X : £7.95 (eek, oh well, I needed this game)
Zelda 64 : £2.99 :buttrock:
Ridge Racer 64 £10 (minty boxed, ohh)
clear purple pad : £7.95

I'm still borrowing mariokart64 from someone, so woo! :spock:

I'm seeing the 64 in a new light, I mean I was always a fan, but when you can play 3 player mariokart, then change to 3 player fzero, ridge racer, then lylat wars, woah lylat wars multiplayer is kinda cool in its own way.

Anyway, the MVS hasn't been touched for two days now, something strange is going on. Can anyone recommend more titles? I was sort of sticking to in-house stuff but ridge racer swayed me,

I was thinking of these next:

Blast Corps (always remember it being playable)

.. :spock: actually thats the only one I can think of now, I've got a healthy collection of bare carts building up, not really interested in complete mint boxed stuff, as the cardboard doesn't make my trousers rise like a nice snk snaplock.

Any interesting hardware I should look out for too?

I think those, Zelda and Mario are the only games I ever bought for my N64.

But they all provided endless hours of entertainment.

The only one I have is Sin & Punishment.

Great game though.

Only problem it is actually kind of hard to come by and I believe it's fairly expensive.

Around the $60-70 range I believe...?

Pilotwings is good, but quite basic, and very difficult, for me anyway.

Blast corps simply rocks, I'll look for that damnit, and Castlevania, hmm they have that in town,

If you're looking for N64 games, you MUST get Beetle Adventure Racing. I had more fun with that game than either Mario Kart 64 or F-Zero X. IMO it's the most underrated N64 game out there.

Believe it or not I still have yet to play Pilotwings 64 (even though I loved the SNES version):emb:

its hard finding collector-type information on the 64, such as hardware revisions, different cases, rare titles. etc

agreed on that beetle adventure racing.
unfortunately thats one i dont have. but super enjoyable.
i played shadow gate. i dont know why but i liked it.
alot of people will probably find it slow and tedious.
just like the original.

i was about to recommend conkers bad fur day. finally hooked up my n64 and started playing that. great game with tons of personality and charm. rare did a really good job with this one. i laugh my ass off so much playing this game....

If it hasn't been stated yet, try to find a copy of the JPN cart, Sin & Punishment. Fucking awesome Treasure shooter! Probably one of my favorite N64 games ever.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time is excellent as well.

When I picked up an N64 a year or so back, I mainly went for loads or RARE games like Banjo Tooie, Jetforce Gemini, Conkers BFD, Blast Corps, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
Of course, if you dont like RARE's approach to platform gaming then there isnt going to be much joy for you in that list...

And as Baseley already said, get Mischief Makers (AKA troublemakers) - 2D gaming goodness from Treasure.

Excitebike 64 might also be worth a punt.

sin and punishment isnt an FPS.
It's basically like starfox, you simply control the cursor while the characters move on "rails" through stylish and futuristic looking levels. bad ass game.

thanks for the heads up, I always thought it was like goldeneye, perfect yawn dark, or something.

I might look into it then, apart from the fact my PAL machine might display it in gay PAL 60, and theres no RGB out on the UK systems either, fab.

Very excellent game, though I haven't been finding it anywhere.

I really like Paper Mario, Pokemon Puzzle League, Banjo Kazooie, Star Soldier, and Mischeif Makers. There's some other good ones too though.

I asked about RGB/scart cables and the gamestation guy said I could use a GC or SNES one.

apparently nintendo disabled RGB out on the PAL system as it wasn't used to a great deal on their SNES. silly I say.

anyway, with a GC cable it'd probably do composite or something.

lol did you ask me? because i work in GS.

i took in an N64 with a scart lead thinking i'd hit jackpot, but the picture qualities even worse than RF. Tried the same lead in my cube and the resulting picture quality is disgusting.

A friend of mine has an N64, when it came out he got it with Turok and bought Blast Corps later on, and to this day, it's one of the few N64 games I really enjoy, good mindless blasting fun, and graphics are quite nice.

I'm not a big-N fan, but I must admit that I was quite jealous when my friend bought it and we played it for days after days.

Ridge Racer 64 is nice, if you look past the grainy graphics you have an extremely fast, solid, and fun racing game.

I didn't think they existed on the 64, apart from the cutesy cart-racing form.

Then my friend, you NEED to obtain Excitebike ASAP. By far the finest interpretation of MotoX I have ever played. The control is superb, the graphics quite phenominal for an N64 (almost blur-free), and you're also getting the original, an updated version, and a raft of subgames thrown in as well. Trust me, whatever you have to pay for this one, it's worth it. One of the machine's finest, and most under-rated titles ever IMO.

you can't even mod a pal n64 to output rgb. it's only possible with ntsc systems. awesome, eh?

as for the cube's rgb cable :
don't know if it's true (i think it is), but i read that bigN changed the pinout of the av plug or something like that.
all i know for sure is, that i got a black screen when i wanted to use my gc rgb cable (nintendo brand) with my snes. :(

Hey Kernow, let me know what you think when you pick up Excitebike. All this talk of it has just made me go and bid on a copy too (got rid of it some years ago for some stupid reason I can't remember), there's actually a copy going on BIN for £12.50 which is pretty good. Be warned though, it's more difficult to get into than you're prolly expecting - I still remember it took me several hours to understand that the game wanted me to... *gasp*... slow down to take certain jumps. Great game though. And check the graphics - unusually clean and pixelly for the N64 (well, if memory serves me correctly).

fuck Fzero X is great, first game I bought when I got this 64, its simply baffling how they get the speed sensation out of it when its using about ... 5 polygons for the cars and track.

a simply awesome title. me loves it.

APART, from the gay intro screen, characters, all a bit meh.

but the heavy metal soundtrack rocks, gotta have metal when racing/shooting things.
