Games you really wanted to love, but just couldn't

At the moment, there's really only 2 games I wanted to love, but somehow just couldn't get into them.

GTA: Vice City-Anybody who knows me, knows that I'm a HUGE 80's freak. So when it was announced that VC would have a massive soundtrack of 80's hits, I couldn't believe it. Then, I got the game. To tell you the truth, the soundtrack was everything I thought it would be with Emotion and Wave being my favorite stations. But after the 15th or so mission, I found myself bored with absolutely no urge what so ever to continue playing.

MK: DA-The MK franchise has always been my favorite fighting series since the release of MK1. So when MK5 was announced, I couldn't wait. Then, as usual, I got the game and was highly disappointed. It just didn't feel like MK. Instead, every time I put the controller down, I felt more and more dissatisfied. It just felt like a severely watered down Soul Calibur with blood and gore. And to my surprise, everyone who hated MK1-4 loves MK: DA. DA is easily one of the single biggest letdowns I have ever encountered in my video game playing life time.

With that said, what games did you really want to enjoy, but instead ended up extremely disappointed with after finally playing them?

Bangaio, Treasure made... Shooter... hmmmm, i hated it.

King of Fighters 2000, very disappointed.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1, 2, 3, 4: Couldn't get into it

Samurai Shodown games-Sorry, I just don't see why it's so popular
NFL 2K3-Only because I just suck at football
SEGA GT 2002-This is even more boring than GT3
Hitman 2-Those Max Payne controls are murder
Final Fantasy IIV-This was the first RPG I decided to try, but I still can't like them.
Super Metroid-I won't say why. Just listing this game here is enough to get me killed.

Virtual On -Saturn

I love the premise, and I want to love this game, but so far I find myself not able to "get into it."

The hype killed it for me. Heralded as 'the best shooting ever' amongst other things, i came away extremely unimpressed. The repetitive gameplay and poor enemy design, not to mention the puzzle section left a bitter taste in my mouth. Recieved my copy 2 days after launch day and haven't played it since.

Metal Gear Solid:
being a huge fan of action movies, MGS should be the be all to end all game for me, but it isn't. Awful top-down camera coupled with annoying radio cut scenes , and a poor aiming system. I've sat down to play this game many times, but put something else on after a few minutes.

Final Fantasy :
one of the most downright boring game series ever devised. NEXT!

Guilty Gear X:
beautiful graphics, great music and presentation. what kills Guilty Gear for me is the characters. either too weird, too boring or just plain suck-ass. Unlike KOF, FF, SS, SF, and the like, i can't find any character i really like to get good with.

Daytona 2001 = Played the inferior version to death on the Sega Saturn so the DC version was BORING!

Nightcaster = bad camera angles PLUS overly difficult gameplay = disappointment

Wreckless: The Yakuza Mission = Aside from the realistic graphical effects, the game is too short and repetitive for my tastes.

Most RPG's = Too boring and repetitive regardless of platform or series. Once in a great while I'll enjoy one, but that's a rare occurence.

Sorry, Plisken, but that makes no sense. If you were talking about part 2, I'd understand. But this game is cinematic brilliance at it's best. the cut scenes add to the atmosphere and the camera is perfect. But, my earlier post can garner the same reply from you so I really should talk, I guess.

I have tried and tried , but just cant get into it. Its just not fun. I like most games and have fun playing them , this game seems to be a nice change from the standard 10 minute playability of most sega releases, but I just cant get into it for some reason.

Final Fantasy 8 - I was so excited coming off of FF7 for this game, and it is just a steaming pile of shit. I actually kidded myself that it was good up until the end of Disc 2, at which point I finally realized how awful it was.

Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 4 - The series has just gotten to the McDonals stage. It was great, and it became so popular that it will sell well no matter what, and now it sucks, but people still like it becuase it USED to be great. I've tried and tried but every Tekken game since Tekken 3 has been average, at best.

StarFox Adventures - It was cool, and I love StarFox, but I just can't get over the fact that it's really some other game with a StarFox paintjob in order to mask it's short commings. Oh well.

Silpheed: The Lost Planet.
I loved Silpheed on my mate's Mega CD, but the PS2 version just bored the crap outta me.

Plisken already covered most of the reasons. Top down view, awquard aiming, worlds worst videogame plot- ever.

The two that come to mind first are:

Kizuna Encounter - Super Tag Battle. Game was just plain boring to me. I'm sure it is good in two player mode, but in single player I just can't get into it.

God how that game is so incredibly overhyped.

Maximo- I just cannot play this game for any extended length of time. I have fun for about 15 minutes, then it just gets irritating.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica (DC)- I tried once. Tried twice. Tried three times and only once could I stay interested long enough to get past the first disc. This is without a doubt the worst RE game.

Resident Evil (GC remake)- I already knew all the major plot points anyway, its the same retarded gameplay dressed in flashy graphics.

Final Fantasy IX- Loved 8, LOVED 7, loved 6 and even 5, but I couldn't get anywhere in this game, I don't know what it is. Chrono Cross sort of ruined my appetite for RPGs, so this just fell in with the rest of them. Blah.

Like Plisken, I wanted so much to like Metal Gear Solid. I played halfway through it like three times and then finally sold it. I didn't have any problems with the camera though. While the cut scenes do add to the atmosphere, there were simply too damn many of them. I didn't like running down the hallway then watching a cut scene, going into a room then watching a cut scene, shooting a guy then watching a cut scene. When the cut scenes weren't interrupting you the damn radio was. I was afraid to ignore either one because I thought I would miss something important. The fact that I felt like I was watching the game more than playing it killed it for me.

Seeing those of you who don't like Samurai Shodown makes me want to cry! There is no better game series, in my opinion. Absolutely the best games ever made period! I know that many will not agree with that last statement, but that's why it's my opinion :D .

As for me, Timesplitters 2 was extremely disappointing. I was really looking forward to another FPS, but nothing about this game interested me. The levels were too short. The enemies were uninteresting. Nothing at all was remarkable. I just don't get what the game magazines saw in this. I sold it right after I beat it.

Skies of Arcadia is another. I loved the storyline and most of the game. The random encounters killed it for me and I was never ever to go back to it after about 8 hours into it.

FFIX - it just felt kind of like another cookie-cutter RPG. It didn't have that magic that VI or VII had.

FFVIII - bland, boring storyline and characters I didn't care about. I forced myself to get real far in the game and then just gave up. A few months later I started from scratch and got real far and gave up again. I repeated this a third time and then just shelved it. I suppose I did get a lot of gameplay time out of it though :) . But only cause I forced myself too :( .

Final Fantasy X was probably the best example for me... I liked the characters, the story's probably the most cohesive the series has ever seen, and it plays well. But the oversimplification of the magical elements and the near-uselessness of status-inflicting spells (not to mention the ludicrous amounts of time required to really get much out of tinkering with weapons) made this game much less than it should have been. Not to mention, it has the single worst soundtrack in the history of the series... if pressed, the only track I can remember is the Hymn of the Fayth, and that's only because it was repeated so damned often.

Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics are also fine examples. FFT is a fine game, but I just can't get into tactical-combat games no matter how hard I try... and Vagrant Story's stellar premise and presentation was spoiled by utterly horrible pacing, too much micromanagement, and insanely dull and tedious combat.

FFX - I really did want to loved this game. It looked so pretty, but it just didn't have enough gameplay for me :( .

Now please don't flame me for this. I'm not trying to appear l33t. I honestly feel this way. I just couldn't get into them. Besides, trying to appear "l33t" in the videogaming community is pretty sad, isn't it ;) ?

Dragon Warrior 7 - crap 3d world that forces you to constantly rotate the camera.

can't find the time to play them ............ I have played the second for 10 hours long time ago and then , I stopped (can't remeber why) . I tried to play it again but couldn't figure out what's happening (forgot the story) ....... but I will play them when I have enough time

*** an advice to those who can't enjoy RPGs ; try to find enough time to play them . don't judge a RPG by playing for 10 minutes and say it sucks . play at least 10 hours and then you can say if you like it or not (especially FF 7 which I didn't enjoy it that much at the bigenning where you play in midgar and considerd it the best FF after playing for 60 hours) . also , try to find a game which is easy to get into like dragon warior and suikoden 2 .

Maybe one day I'll wake up and realize what I was doing wrong. But that dumb game is a puzzle shooter - not a shooter. Like some kind of Bust a move shooter, collect the right amount of colored enemies to win nonsense.

Capcom vs SNK - I was thrilled when I heard capcom was doing this, and I was thrilled when I played it a E3. Then I bought it and it was a real let down. Sorry, but Kyo doesn't play that way. Natch for Benimaru. And Rugal, well, they just got him all wrong.

CvS 2 - Haohmaru and Hibiki = raped. They aren't SNK characters. Sure, they are powerful, but not the way SNK made them. Fuck that shit.

Final Fantasy 8: I was hyped for this game. Played the demo for HOURS on end. Great music, great graphics, great beginning. The battle system sucked, and the story turned into ASS CHEESE... And there was no real bad guy to hate in the game, which was horrible, especially after having Kefka and Sephiroth in the previous games. I am still dissapointed in this game. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

Grandia: I tried to play this game and I just couldn't get into it. The story was just so...bleh. And much like FF8 it had no real good villain to hate in that game, which killed it for me. I just couldn't get into this game no matter how good people told me it was supposed to be.

FFVIII- I played for several hour and the game just boring. I hated the fact of stealing spells instead of earning them. I also did not really like the cast of characters.

Tomb Raider- Ever since the first title I hated this series. It was way over hyped I hated the graphics on the game play.

KOF2K- I had such high hopes for this especially since I liked '99 so much. I played it a couple times and sold it a week after I bought it.

Max Payne-(PS2) It looked good, had some innovative game play and I hated it. Constantly having to readjust the camera for combat. The control also sucked. He seemed always to be running somewhat diagonally and that didn't help at also during the heat of combat.

MGS2- I hated Raiden's story and the soap opera story line. Graphically it was fantastic, but the 40+ continous cut-scenes got really annoying, slowed down the game play and made me lose interest in what as going to happen.

Mega Man X5 I love the first three of the series on the SNES. I played through X4 on the Playstation, and thought it was OK... a little too
"kiddie" though. The series lost its darker atmosphere (compared to the NES titles) and seemed like something targeted to 10-year-olds. It seemed like a side project for Capcom instead of something with a lot of effort behind it. Still, the game wasn't bad. Then I played X5. This game did absolutely nothing for me. Boring and uninspired. It was... embarrassing.

Quake II (N64) After playing the PC version, I was looking forward to this port because I didn't have a powerful PC yet. I think the first Quake was very well translated to the system... but this one tried to be different, and it simply didn't work. Oh well, there's always the PC version. :D

Inspired by a friend who talked about nothing else for weeks when it came out, I bought a copy for DC and tried to get into it, but it just didn't work out for me. The same goes for Shen Mue.

3 Count Bout

I *still* try to find out how to play the damn game without breaking the sticks. One day I like it, the other day I get mad over it... it's a cool piece of game, except for the stick whaggling and button mashing. If that had been left out, it would have been the best wrestling game ever IMO.

Metal Slug 1st Mission (NGPC)

It plays like a SNK version of Bionic Commando, with lots of stupid platform jumping. A Slug should be all about shooting, not platforming.

Dynasty warriors 3- Seems cool at first but it got boring after a while.

Burnout- It was good but not that great.The second one was pure gold though.Puts the original to shame.

Street fighter EX3- Feels so much like EX2 with a few tweaks.What was capcom thinking?!? I was hyped about this game back at the PS2 launch.

Ikaruga- I followed the hype but i was dissapointed with it after playing it.

World Heroes 2 Jet

I really liked the ports of WH1 & 2, and when I finally found this for the Neo in a tiny little used video games store I was overjoyed.

I took it home and played it and it sucked. I really like the chararcters in the series, but the backgrounds and the system in this particular game are just no good.

I'm so sorry, Galford, but I just can't like the game. I bought Samurai Shodown 2 from Jonathan once because I figured I was doing something wrong before. I tried many times, but the game is too slow and the characters seem to have no reach.

I was never a fan of SamSho and I'll never be.

the backgrounds are beautiful, but I prefer standard fighters over weapons based, I suppose.

I feel like a heretic but I never learned to appreciate KoF the way it was meant to be played. The backgrounds and music are great for the most part but I think the gameplay is too fast for my taste. I prefer fighting games that require more deliberate movement such as SamSho, LB, and even MotW.

Super Smash Brothers Melee-sorry, I didn't get it. The game's overly simplistic style just didn't capture me, and even in party mode where you had four players at the same time I wasn't all that interested. There's a LOT of oldskool goodness in there but...eh.

Onimusha 2-after loving the first game so much, I was REALLY looking forward to the second one. The gift exchange thing is neat, but they may as well have called it Final Fantasy-The Onimusha Adventure. The technological additives to the story really killed the whole thing for me, and even though I enjoyed playing it, I've never returned to it. The first Onimusha, as well as most of the RE games, keep me coming back again and again even though I already know every last nook, cranny and detail about them. I am not at all compelled to repeat the Onimusha 2 experience any time soon. Disappointing.

Grand Theft Auto 3-the game is not nearly as good as it is shocking, which I think was the whole attraction to begin with. Running over old ladies, beating up whores and demolishing cop cars is fun for about twenty minutes. After that, I find myself without a reason to care. I guess I can acknowledge that it's an important (and good) game for many reasons, but I just don't have any enthusiasm for it.

Castlevania: Circle Of The Moon-there was a lot of anticipation for this game when it came out. And I admit that it's well made. But the poor lighting, combined with the annoyingly tough skill curve and the impossibly difficult bosses really discouraged me. I intend to go back and finish it...after I play Harmony of Dissonance, that is :)

Mario 64-widely touted by more than one source as 'the greatest game ever made'. Which boggles my mind because I just don't see it, sorry. Maybe it was revolutionary at the time, but through these rose colored glasses all I can see is the same old silly concepts utilized in a 3D environment. Super Mario Brothers is a classic game...Mario 64 isn't. Super Mario World is better than this, for chrissake!

Sonic Adventure-ho hum. It's another mascot brought into 3D environment. This game did NOTHING for me. Nothing. I tried. I really tried. I'd even be willing to put the blame for this game failing me on my own peculiar tastes in games. But I just couldn't get into it.

I think what you just stated is the opposite of why I prefer KOF and not the SamSho and Last Blade games.

Definetly everything on the GBA...I can't stand the blasted design! Too dark, and my hands cramp up after 20 minutes. SUXX.

Just remembered one... Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance. Rehashed level design, boring gameplay (CotM played much better), way too easy overall, and barely any hidden stuff. Bleah.

It was like "Castlevania Mystic Quest" or something.

Zelda Majora's Mask and Chrono Cross. Both were too different from the original formula for my tastes. Their prequels are among my top favorite games so it was very disappointing.

Carnage Heart- God, I love this game... But I just cant play it for more that 20 minutes. I try to build good A.I, but it's too hardcore for me. I keep hitting a rut everytime I play, and then lose interest. I think the back and forth gameplay between troop management and constantly programing gets to me. But I want to love the fuck out of it.

Jedi Knight II - Multiplayer was boring and uninspired while the singleplayer's storyline failed to grab me

Donkey Kong 64 - Nothing magical about it. I'll go back to my snes version now

Mario Sunshine - I'm almost afraid to list this game because it's a very good game. The reason I have it here is because I think there's nothing special, keeping you coming back for more.

Warcraft 3 - Um, the holy grail has been found and it's BORING. Perhaps the fact that I suck has something to do with it. Shoulda bought BF1942 first.

Bangaioh - WTF? I can barely see my fargin ship!

Sky Gunner - LOVE the art, but HATE the gameplay with a passion.

Panzer Dragoon Saga - Well, I'm one of the biggest saturn fans out there and this game just didn't draw me in like the first two. My patience level is not very high to begin with.

Vagrant Story - YAWN, after a few puzzles and platform-esk sections I put this one away. VERY cool setting and feel though.

Gran Turismo 3 - GOSH, I LOVE the beginner modes, but I stopped playing when my tires would be GONE after only one lap. Fark that

Last Resort - Another game I really wanted to like, but I couldn't deal with the fact that there are sections where you HAVE to take a hit. I guess that's how arcades make money. :-(

Harvest Moon (PS2) - Ummm... yeah... I'm still waiting for my first crop to grow. Maybe I should water it some more.

Yeah, Wolf, I have to agree with some of those. I never understood the craze over Panzer Dragoon Saga. I honestly never liked that damn game. I ended up getting rid of it. The graphics were pretty lame, I thought, and so was the story. The battles were pretty boring for me as well. I don't know. I think the hype fed on itself so that now it's "rare and coveted". Kind of like RS, but RS at least is a good game.

I feel the same as you about Sky Gunner too. I dunno. It's a game I want to love cause of the neato graphics and quirkiness, but it just doesn't have it. It's alternates between crazy hard and stupid easy. I'm never quite sure what I'm supposed to be doing in the game either.
