Almost makes me want to buy my first PS2 game. Guess I will just have to buy it for my sister who's birthday is Monday. Then I just might try it out.
Newest EGM has pages and pages of GTA coverage. Heavy December issue with tons of reviews and previews.
I'm waiting for Resident Evil 0. Very soon comrades. It will be in my greasly little hands and I shall return to the world of survival horror! YEAH BABY...

I relate practically every goddamn thing I do in real life to this game in anxious, horrible anticipation. For instance, I saw a cool motorcycle parked next to my car the other day. I thought, "Cool...But not as cool as RIDING FRIGGIN' MOTORCYCLES IN THE NEW GTA!". Later that day I saw a pedestrian crossing the street. No you're not. I for one will not either. The gameplay is not genius but childish. Most people never played the missions, but just go mess around. I was bored after 5 minutes of it. It just shows you what a game is when it's made by the same company who did State of Emergency.

It seems what I love the most from these games is what some of you hate about it... The idea that anything goes. I have never played a mission in GTA1, 2, or 3. Well, ok maybe once or twice... but I put on the codes, have some friends over... and we play all night, just doing nothing... We run people down, we try to jack certain cars... set buildings on fire (GTA1)... Cause pileups... try to get the highest amount of cops to come after you (did you know if you kill enough cops in GTA1 no more come?!) Jump walls, find new areas... I am still finding stuff... etc, etc.
We use to do this as kids. My friends and I would play games like Need For Speed and spend hours creating the biggest pile ups, or the most amazing crashes. It would go on for hours. In Road Rash on 3DO we would ditch the bike and go exploring... I bet you all missed a lot of the cities, did you know you could go down most parallel streets?
I just love the GTA games because it made a game out of what my friends and I use to do all the time in Video Games... and well... that is damn cool.

Nowadays, only a game that is REALLY good would last me more than a month. Most games only last for some minutes in my consoles.
GTA 3 is one of the best games in history. I played the hell out of it. I finished the game (yes, mainly I played the missions, and from time to time I just explored and had fun) and I can still play it some more.
Vice City is gonna be bigger, badder, better. I'll get it as soon as I can. Too bad it will need soms time to arrive to Europe, and I'm pretty sure it will be in FUCKING 50 hz. If that's the case I'll have to get the USA verion somehow.
About State of Emergency, I agree it was a very bad game, specially compared to GTA 3, burt that's not a reason think Vice City is gonna be bad.

.............. to be honest ,I thought this game had more attention than it deserved .but now ,I can see how hard the developers tried hard to improve this game. and yes, they have succeded on that
I bought GTA3 and found it very boring, I wont be getting it either...

No. And to be quite honest I don't understand why GTA is such a big fucking deal.
I didnt like GTA. Thought it was boring. I rented it and brought it back before the rental period was even over.

Especially when State of Emergency and GTA 3 weren't made by the same company... Rockstar is a producer, not a game developer. GTA 3 was made by DMA and State of Emergency was made by VIS.
Vice City has been programmed by Rockstar North FYI.

Holy crap. With all the people on here saying they WON'T buy it, I now must say that I will. I loved the first one. I had the feeling that I was in a movie... and yet somehow it seemed all real. The city was doing stuff with or without you.

No it wasn't, and that's the problem. Everything just "spawned" on your screen so you could kill it or blow it up. Nothing was in real time, nothing you did mattered, it was just all so fucking lame. While playing it I could actually sense all the coOlkIds talking about how they raped some prostitute in GTA last night. Yeah, ummm...what fun! I don't need a video game to rape some prostitute, I can so that for about half the price in real life.
Bottom line, game was boring as shit. If I want to blow shit up and pump a shotgun into someone's face at point blank range I'll stick with Q3A, the God of all killing games.

You see, you said you had hoped Shinobi would be a good game and were looking forward to it. But when EGM gave it a so-so review you said you wouldn't bother with the game.
I have said on numerous occasions that I just don't like the GTA games, therefore had absolutely NO interest in Vice City, ever. So I won't be getting it.

Grand Theft Auto, while not the most fun game to everyone, is a marvel of game-design and technology. I dont really like the idea too much, but I will play it because of what it is...quite the feat.

So we will give you the prize for the kid with no imagination... it was about making your own rules/games out of it. See, some people, namely me and my friends, don't really have any desire to sit down on the linear path of game playing. We have always known we did things a little different then others... read my first post, but GTA was great for people like us. Just hanging out and doing stuff in the game. leet codes? haha, what a fucking riot, the game is about having fun, if you aren't playing the missions the codes just give you lots of cool toys to entertain yourself with. GTA 1 with THESHIT code turned on was a riot, we played for HOURS! Oh well, I doubt you care... we are lamers in your book... whatever :) Your loss man, I will be having a blast playing Vice City with my friends.

IGN is perhaps the finest example of video game 'payola' that ever graced the web.
Loads of 'me-too' reviews, and the predictable spate of 9's-10's for all the sure-fire 'blockbuster' titles. Shitty writing too.
Web coverage and reviews of games tend to be the most disposably written.
EGM may be a shadow of it's former self, but sadly it still represents the best 'journalism' the game industry has to offer. They get accused of playing favorites for each of the three mainstream systems, so they must be somewhere in the middle. I'll always pine for the old EGM...

The game desereves all tens. I looked at some spoilers on the game and I nearly wet my pants. I can't believe they improved on the game as much as they did. I mean it's really insane.
I don't see why people would hate the game so much. I mean it's boring is good I guess but I don't know many people who got bored of it(I only got bored after playing it repeatedly after beating the game.) But the whole "it sucks because no one wants to play the missions" is complete crap. My first priority was to beat the game. But exploring was important and sometimes I got side tracked on killing sprees but didn't everyone?
gta III wasn't the greatest but it opened up a genre no one had properly explored, but gta Vice City has come and improved on every aspect. That rarely happens in a sequel and specially a popular one like gta III was.

I thought the game was alright when I played it and not the 2nd coming of Christ as some would have you believe. I thought the missons where slow and I quit because I really didn't get a thrill of going on mindless killing sprees. Blow shit up? Real men play Contra. :p

IGN is still honest. I tend to agree with them on most games.

PSM/OXM-VERY honest
Gamepro-I like their ratings system but the magazine seems like it was written by 7th graders.
So where does one go for an honest review?

I won't be picking this game up. I'm sure it'll be fun and worthy of high marks for innovation in programming and such.
I had fun playing the first one but not for the missions so much as I could just do whatever the hell. Picking up a hooker and driving her somewhere to get some action was funny (even funnier that you could beat the bitch down and get your money back after she was done).
Mag reviews do help me out a little on some games. If nothing else they help me provide friends with opinions on games when they ask me about a certain title (like working at a game store means I magically know everything about every game out there :rolleyes: ).
I'd go into the whole speal on why I hate hype but I'll save that for another day :) .

I fail to see how you bashing a game you haven't played is different from me deciding I'm no longer interested in Shinobi based on reviews from a magazine I trust. GTA: Vice City is a different game from the other GTAs. Just as you can't compare GTA2 to GTA3. I'm certain there will be quite a few similarities, but still, it's a different game.
For example, I loved Tony Hawk 1. I was luke-warm to 2... I detested 3. They're all pretty much the same game right? But deep down, they really aren't.
Anyway, don't get all high and mighty and preach to me that I should make my decision after I've played the game and then go and bash a game without playing it. Practice what your preach.. or just don't preach.
I have nothing against you personally, but that just really erked me.
If you like Scarface and Miami Vice, you'll love Vice City... It's that simple ;)

First off I never even bashed GTA: VC. I just said I wasn't interested in it and won't be getting it. That's my choice. I just thought that having your decision made up for you by reading a review of a game was kinda dumb... since you were initially interested in the game.
I'm not preaching anything. I was just pointing out the differences. If you don't want to play TJ&E3 that's fine, just like I don't want to play GTAVC. The game is awesome.Although i didn't like GTA3 that much as the graphics look simplistic, vice city fills in the gap.The graphics has a cleaner and sharper look and the city is twice as big as the 1st game's city.They have improved the car models as well.The mayhem is still there and its a lot more fun than before.You guys should check out this game.
And for some of you wondering, vice city is not a sequel or a prequel.Its a stand alone game.Completely new.

If this game was the sequel to some classic "cult" game, then most people on this site would probably love it.
It just isn't cool to like anything popular on ng.com. Saying that GTA3 kicked ass wouldn't be "hard core". Rockstar fucking sold out man! What a load of shit!

Did you know that I was just getting ready to type nearly the exact same thing BJMFH ;) ? Vice City is one of the few next-gen games that actually deserves the accolades it's receiving. And for all the "hard-core" gamers here that hate next-gen games just because there new, then all I can say is that you need to lower your ego's immediately. I'm not saying you have to love GTA3/VC, but to call them garbage only because there not on a classic system is beyond childish.

If you hate GTA3 or VC, at least hate them because YOU dislike the games. Please don't hate a game just because you are trying to fit some image conjured up by self-proclaimed video game wizards.
The following list is a few reasons as to why a "hard core" video gamer might dislike a certain title.
1. The game is on the PS2.
2. The game sold really well.
3. The game has become a staple in pop culture.
4. All your friends are talking about it.
5. The game was featured on the news.
6. The game received many positive reviews in video game publications that obviously sold out to "THE MAN" years ago.
7. The game is 3D.
I could continue, but I feel certain that I've made my point. If you found any of the reasons listed above as adequate cause to hate a game, than allow me to congratulate you, you are truly "hard core".
A hardcore gamer, in my book, is someone who loves videogames with a passion no matter if the game was made 10 days ago or 10 years ago. You may hate GTA all you want, you have the right to do it but you can't say the opinions BJMFH has pointed out. I love this series because it was an opening from the linear gameplay into a more chaotic theme. It took me nearly 6 months before deciding to rent it first because I thought "here goes another riding car game". I was all wrong. The simple fact that you can squash some civilians is great because you aren't restrained to doing your missions one by one. You can't really lose either which is a good point. Hate it if you want but don't come claiming that it's a childish game or a teenage freaks game. Even I hate to be associate with the masses but I don't give a damn when it comes to a game because if it's fun for me, I'm going to play it!

Much of this board has a serious mainstream-complex.
I just think it's funny that people complain that "some players don't even play it for the missions". That's a *good* sign, folks. If there's enough to have fun with without even hitting the meat of the game, the developers have done something right.
I'm certainly not a big GTA 3 fan, but even I can appreciate the variety of things to do that it offers. And all that 80's music should make VC that much more interesting to play...
