Most difficult game ever made

...Contra EX for GBA. It's the same as Contra III for the SNES (with a few levels from Contra:Hatd Corps thrown in) but they took out the super bomb and you can only carry one weapon at a time. This game is so hard that it isn't fun anymore. I actually threw my GBA, something I haven't done since the days of the NES...

hard to answer, since I haven't played all the games ever made.

Most difficult fighter: Art of Fighting 2 (Neo)
Most difficult action/adventure: Contra Hardcorp (Genesis)
Most difficult RPG: Phantasy Star II (Genesis)

I always say Bagman...that old arcade game.

I've never even heard of anyone getting to the 2nd level without cheating.

for the Famicom/NES, trying to beat Gold Headed Destro is an act of congress, God and one of the programmers of the game accepting bribes to maybe give you a code to bypass him. I've only met one person who ever beat the game and proved it, all others just talk.

for Famicom/NES

That game is too damn hard for it's own good. Still haven't beaten it :(

It's gotta be Gradius 3&4 on PS2. I played it for about 4 hours strait and never beat it <img src="graemlins/veryangry.gif" border="0" alt="[Very Angry]" /> <img src="graemlins/blowtop.gif" border="0" alt="[Blow Top]" />

I'd say Battletoads and Super Ghouls N Ghosts rank pretty high on the OMFG I'm Gonna Kill Someone But I'll Keep Playing Cause It's Good list. I'll send anyone a dollar who beat The Adventures Of Batman and Robin on the Genesis WITHOUT a Game Genie. That game is FUCKING HARD.

My favorite painfully hard game remains Viewpoint.

Yeah, Viewpoint is simply aggravating.

Gradius 4 is impossible. I have managed to beat Gradius 3, only through cheating however.

Silpheed for the PS2 is also a pretty difficult game. It doesn't help that you're forced to start over the entire level when you die, even if you made it to the boss. Einhander isn't very forgiving either.

Makes me wonder why I buy shooters if all I do is lose.

Did you play Contra III on the "hard" level mode? Contra EX on either mode is much easier than the original Alien Wars "hard" mode. Even the GameBoy Contra III: Alien Wars (the black and white one) is harder. Although the super bomb is a nice weapon and a staple of this classic game, it is possible to get by without it (try the original Contra games on MAME, not the watered-down difficulty Nintendo versions). The only reason Contra EX is frustrating is because the GameBoy Advance control pad is stiff.

Can't blame you on throwing the GBA though. Just try Super Ghouls and Ghosts :)

Which GI Joe? There were two. The one with the branching levels? Or the platformer/sidescroller by Takara?

I always had problems with Firepower 2000 for the SNES. I sucked BIG TIME on that game. I remember watching my brother tear that shit up on the most difficult setting though, so maybe it's just me? It was a cool game none the less.

There's no gold headed Destro in GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor (the Capcom one) so I can only assume it's the platform one (no subtitles) by Taxan. ;)

I recently picked up Galaxy Fight and AOF2 carts, and I'm close to breaking both of them over my knee.

Without a doubt the two single most frustrating and challenging games I have ever played.

believe it or not, you can beat AoF2 - it's all about jumping straight up and kicking as the enemy approaches, or sticking to the high low game. Reasonable games like KoF 98 have spoiled us.

I finished the US version, 3 out of 4 paths with Ray. No cheating devices used, only tons of practice. I think that finishing Contra SS Stage 6 is more difficult. I've never seen stage 7 of SS, and I can't finish Stage 5 of Contra III in Hard mode. :D

Yes definetly something they did not need to do. Up the difficutly to game that was already difficult. Not only that taking out the screen bombs and mulitple weapon. Come on Konami WTF is up with that anyway.

I never beat it either, but I can easily make it to the last level. I haven't put a lot of effort into winning yet, but unless the second half of the final level gets a lot tougher, this game isn't that hard.

Herbert's Dummy Run (ZX Spectrum, and what do you mean you've never heard of it?)
I really cant imagine that anyone would be able to finish this game unless they heald down the keys C,H,E,A and T while climbing the rope.
Hell, sometimes I even died before I got to that part!

I think it Ultima: Exodus, something like that, for the nes. That game was fucking hella hard. Also another nes game, something like faxanadu.

Another really, really hard game is "Jurassic Park 2: the chaos continues" for the SNES.

By god if this game isn't damn near impossible.
Plays a LOT like contra...but with more exploreable and maze-like areas.

Limited ammo and time limits make this game your worst nightmare. It's also one of the best SNES games of all time. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out.

I'm surprised this game never comes up on this board....

Chakan on Genesis. Why oh why did they not make a DreamCast installment? :(

Wow. I remember how cool that game was supposed to be. They were 40% done with it before they canned it. Wayyyyy too bad. Its definitely a franchise Sega could bring back.

Yeah, that's no kidding about Batman and Robin. In fact, I used to rate every game's difficulty against that one. Like Contra Hard Corps was a .8 Batman and Robin...

Did anyone EVER play the arcade G.I.Joe game...that was one of the coolest cartoon to game arcades games. It was long as hell and it reminded me of Cabal but you were running towards the cobra headquarters......just wondering if anyone ever played it....I saw it only once at Mall of america back in 1998......first and only time I ever saw it.....I believe Konami made the game........

I don't know about everyone else, but MAGICIAN LORD on the Neo is one of the most difficult Neo platformers I've ever played (Neo Geo and other platforms included).

I've heard people beating this on one credit, but honestly, the home version is practically impossible, especially the way it starts you way back on each level when you die!

Hmm... I'd probably say Viewpoint. But I am very much enjoying it. I can't get past the 3rd level though :( .

AOF2 is tough, but once you know how you can get far in the game. I still haven't gotten to Geese yet though!

..Funny you mention MoA and G.I. Joe arcade game in the same sentence. I live near the MoA, and the Hot Comics and collectables near me has the G.I. Joe Arcade game! Hot Comics must have gotten it from MoA.. That game reminds me of Devastators.

You are somewhat right...The GI JOE arcade game was indeed running on the Devastators engine. Pretty damn impressive for it's time...you could actually see things like the entrance to a cave or base at the beginning of a stage and actually get closer to it as you progressed. Scaling was an impressive effect back in the day when this was released.

Seek the game out and play it...it's a far better usage of the Devastators engine!

Ninja Gaiden on the NES...I came oh so close to finishing it and I had a friend that actually did, no cheating either!

To me, it seems that the Ninja Gaiden games rely too much on luck...sure, some skill will go a long way, but the outcomes on the later boss battles seem awfully random.
