Nahhh, it will suck, have great games, and be the best seller cause all Sony is, is hype! Sony is a great hype machine, and tons and tons of people flock to the brand, regardless of it being filled with trash and completly unreliable and crappy hardware. I hate Sony, I will not buy any Sony products... I have wasted my money for too long, but no one else can figure that out. Too bad the PS2 has such great games, and I am sure PS3 will have equally impressive games... and it will be a huge success like PS2, but not in my house.

This is a ridiculous question, especially when you take into consideration the fact that the PS3 isn't even close to being released. The Sony brand name is, like it or not, one of the most powerful consumer "forces" on the planet, and barring some kind of colossal fuck-up on Sony's part, anything they release will sell like crazy.
Is there even a PS3 coming out any time soon?
Man, the next PS system will be 9...I mean c'mon didn't you see the commerical?! Yea NEURAL STIMULATION!!
PS3 is rumored for release in 2005... So, really that is not to far off. Another year and we should see some games up on prototype.

Nahh, they were just refering to how many PS2s you would have to buy to continue playing games 20 years into the future... I mean one every two years sounds about right for Sony's equipment... perhaps a little generous, but... :)

I think it will tank. Look at Sony now...they're in major catch mode, rushing to get everything out from online play to the earlier-than-expected debut of the POS3.
The XBOX is doing far better and is far more advanced than even the rocket scientists at Sony figured. They can't just lazily go about flooding their crappy console with second tier software that they've done all along since the PS1. There's some actual competition out there now!
From what i heard, PS3 will be a very powerful hardware.Sony stated it as 1000 times more powerful than the PS2 and its far more superior than Pentium 4.I heard that Sony is perfecting its processor for the PS3(Advanced Emotion engine?).Like it or not, sony products sell.
I can't comment on XBOX 2 or nintendo's next console(if they are making it that is). There are past rumours that XBOX 2 will come out before PS3 can.
Stop giving BS opinions that PS3 will flock as its not even out in the market yet. There is still a long way to go.The future is unpredictable.
And the PS2's lack of VRAM might be one of the major flaws but some developers as you all know say that it isn't a hurdle now because they are accustomed to the PS2's hardware. Some of the PS2 games such as Burnout 2 or GT3 are proof of what can be done on the PS2 if the developers take advantage of it.Hell, even Hideo Kojima says that the differences between PS2, GC and XBOX is not all that great.
I reserve judgment until we actually KNOW something about it.
If it's the thing they're going to put in your toaster, microwave, DVD player, TV and anything else electronic, as long as they price all of the above equipment around the same price as regulat stuff, it'll sell like crazy. Will someone actually play a game on a toaster? No.
Fuck M$. The only game to own on the X-Box? Halo.
Fuck $ony. The only game to own on the PS2? Well, there's a lot of good ones, but not many I couldn't live without (I'll say Dynasty Warriors 3, but you can get that on the Box too).
Fuck Nintendo. The only games to own on the Cube? Metroid and Zelda.
I hope they all fail and SNK (or Playmore takes over and creates the quality of Stuff SNK used too) returns.

Amen to all of the above, especially with this being a silly question. Post again in 8-12 months when we know more about the P$3 and the X-Box 2.

Funny, I didn't know Xbox was gaining a lot of ground on Sony...maybe I just missed something.
Like it or not, this generation of consoles has Sony in first place by quite a bit over the Xbox and Gamecube.
I think it will all come down to what games are hot when it is released , since there will be plenty of the Sony sheep that will be waiting in droves to own it , I dont think it will tank.
If it has the "must have games" then it will sell well on that basis , but I cant really say much about it until I actually see one running before my eyes , until then its all vapor ware !
Who the fuck cares.
No console maker has ever won three consecutive races. Does anyone here remember what an iron grip Nintendo seemed to once have on this industry? Now they're slugging it out just for 2nd place. The Japanese economy has been in the dumps for years now, and believe it or not the US market is now the most important. I love imports and grew up on them, but the fact is that the best games do not only come from Japanese developers anymore. Bungie and Neversoft are proof of this. I think the market is doomed to be split right down the middle, the video game equivalent of the cola wars. Sony has a powerful brand presence, and they own Japan, but their engineering muscle seriously lacks. Microsoft has all the money in the world, and their first foray, the XBox, is the best next-generation console out there in terms of pure machinery. If their second console is as nicely engineered, it will be hard for third party companies to resist it's charms.
Microsoft=Coke.
Sony=Pepsi.
Although I love Nintendo's machines, I believe they too would be better off pushing portables and being a massive third-party company like Sega. I believe as Sega's bottom line fattens, the suits at Nintendo will have no choice but to take notice and wonder if they too should follow suit.
I think the key to answering this thread is whether or not Sony actually does try to make a kind of bizarre networked console. If they do, I believe they are sunk for sure. A supportable infrastructure for truly global broadband is still more than 20 years away. People, by and large, still think of their consoles as video game machines, nothing more, nothing less.
Shit, this was supposed to be 'Year Of The Online Console' and confusion still reigns about the plans involved, save for XBox Live.
All I know is that Halo 2 will own my world for a long time. Shit, the original Halo still does.
first sega, then nintendo...man, is trip hawkins's dream coming true? will there really be just a third party platform that everyone makes games for? it seems so........ <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />
Well the early statements from Sony about having a massively parallel online network with toasters, microwaves, etc. all hooked in are totally ridiculous. Some of the stupidest shit I've ever read in my life, but not surprising coming from a company that bungled the design of the PS2 as much as it did. I want a console that I can play as a standalone, I don't want to hook up to their lame networks, pay for their lame connection fees, and be required to download their lame games whenever I want to play (laugh, but I bet thats what they're planning . . . can't play w/o connecting!!).
I think Sony's hype machine will be really gearing up soon, in the meantime they're making a pitiful attempt to implement online play for a console with weak internal hardware and NO built in modem, ethernet, OR hard drive . . . doomed for sure on that one.
I really hope that Sony bombs out as badly as it looks like they might on the next console, their current one is such a total embarassment not only in terms of design but also in terms of quality. Microsoft took the RIGHT approach, the best console design ever conceived and implemented and the games are showing that in most cases (except crap like EA's bungled NFS:HP2 port and a few others). Time will tell but I think Sony's days of ruling the console market are numbered . . . PS2's life will be a LOT shorter than Sony anticipated, and rightly so due to its pitiful joke design. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />
The Xbox is designed really well.
Well, aesthetically :p
Nintendo isn't going to go third party only anytime in the near future. The GC's last bunch of releases have sold remarkably well, and Nintendo just has so many well known franchises. Even the N64, which wasn't exactly a smash success, sold pretty decently. Especially right at the end with the Pokemon craze and the Zelda games.
Sony... I don't know, they're really an annoying company. I especially like their policy on 2D games... As in, they shun them. I think they could easily get hit up in a big PR nightmare. Maybe not the most likely scenario, but I could see it happening.
this topic was made by a sony hater for sony haters. Like it or not they just fucking dominate the market place. Because they have practical designs. I didn't say they function properly since all of you seem to talk shit about breaking them. But a controller as big as my girlfriend's tits isn't practical.
Quite likely, the PS3 will do just as well as the current console since the games push it's sales. Although I'm a bigger fan of my XBOX than my PS2, there's no denying that software sells and the PS2 delivers.
As for the XBOX gaining ground on the PS2, if this were true none of it will matter once Oct 29 hits. Grand theft Auto 3 continues to sell like mad and the next installment will sell better than a Big Mac.
This is brand loyalty and consumers will go to those who deliver. The PS3, barring a complete collapse by the PS2, will fare just as well (as long as it's not released too early).
Everyone knows that <a href="http://www.gamefaqs.com" target="_blank">www.gamefaqs.com</a> is a lame board. But i usually use its Top Ten most frequented Titles list as a gauge on the current console war.
Checked it lately?

Nice. ;)
i think its near impossible for it to completely fail.
i mean if it comes out too early, people will buy it since sony is telling them its time to upgrade.
not to mention they fucked up royaly with ps2 in a lot of regards, and its number one anyway.
its rarely ever what are the good games to us that makes ps2 sell. shit like gta3 and all the EA shit sports games make it sell. you actually think REZ pushed any systems? hell if it really was the good games that sold systems, dreamcast would be on top.
so unless it costs an ungodly amount of money, requires a broad band isp at ALL TIMES (not just online, but just to play) or has some lame ass network deal that u need to pay for and u download games, i can guarantee that , or unless xbox2 or whatever (jeez...is sega the only company that can invent a new name???) has some lame ass shit mass market games and comes out first, and is cheap, then ps3 will definately win...but then ofcourse, videogames could hopefully become uncool again, and no one will want it! :D heres to hope'n!
i really dont think nintendo is going third party anytime soon either.

Please, Sony is scared for the future of the Piece o'Shit 3 here in the US. THe ONLY reason the PS is selling more than X-Box is because of the PS1 & those fucking 3rd party Jap developers. That's right. Sony just about has a monopoly on Software. I mean jeez, it still takes like 3-6 months for a Jap game to get released here after its already been released in Japan. And people still run out & buy games like Kingdom Hearts soon as they are released here.
Please, Sony is making fouls out of Anericans. Support the X-Box & more Jap developers will have to. Especially fukkin Squaresoft. I mean, what the fuck. It's so obvious about FF XI. We COULD be playing it next month on the X-Box. But, of course, Squaresoft is just another Jap company that only cares about thereselves.
Look, Sony doesn't give a SHIT about you stupid ass AMercians that support there PS2. They just take your cash & sit back & laugh at you.
If people were SMART they would support the X-Box. Not just lured into Sonys trap. X-Box is here to stay, just wish more stupid ass PS2 owners that buy every game realeased on the system would understand that.
Thank you Capcom for making your small contibutaion in a few months with CVS2/MVC2 online.
console wars and country bashing. does it get any better? and bascially it is about the games as you stated and the fact that microsoft is seen as a joke in the gaming world, well get used to it...

I think the first reason the above should be disregarded as ignorant slop is Saturn Gamer's use of racially deragatory terms. The fact that this person is unable to argue any point, a completely unfounded point in this case, without bringing his personal bigotry into public view is absolutely disgusting. The use of the word "Jap" to describe anyone or anything of Japanese origin is just as deplorable as using the term "nigger" to describe a black person, or someone of African descent.
Secondly, Sony has no reason to be concerned about it's future in either America or Japan. They've had a long-standing establishment in both countries, among others, and won't be losing it anytime soon. Why? Because Sony has continued to produce one of the most highly desired consoles since the inception of the Playstation.
Someone's decision to purchase a console isn't based on the relative "quality" of components included. Nor do they have the expectation that it will perform flawlessly forever. Only a fool would purchase a product not expecting that there is some chance, that it would stop working. Possibly even prematurely. I'm not saying that I particularly like the fact that the PS2 has functionality issues. All I'm saying is that people buy systems for the content produced for them, not for the hope of having a chunk of plastic and silicon that will work perfectly forever.
Senor Saturn Gamer is right, Sony does to an extent have a software monopoly. The Playstation has an amazingly large software library because it's been the easiest console to program for since it's release. This ease of programability caused a lot of slop to be produced, but also brought the system many, many extraordinary titles. People purchased the Playstation because of these titles, and Sony was able to market the system to a very diverse group of people as a result of the Playstation's ease of programmability. This is what drew developers to the Playstation. Companies weren't purchased by Sony in attempt to make their first console dominate the market. Companies signed exclusive production deals with Sony based on the system's merits and user support. This is why companies like Square stay with Playstation despite the fact that the PS2 is more difficult to program for. It's proven itself in the past, and shows no signs of losing it's hold.
I find it laughable that you criticize Sony's concern for the consumer, especially when you're speaking in support of Microsoft. Especially in light of Microsoft's past unethical behaviour in dealing with competition. Sony isn't free from any blame here either, but the level to which Microsoft takes its unfair business practices is absurd. Would it somehow be better for Microsoft to have a console software monopoly? Saturn Gamer seems to think so. I'd much rather support a Sony, a company with at least some ethical base, than Microsoft. Do you think that Microsoft cares anymore about you than Sony does? Corporations are in business for money, consumer satisfaction is only a tool to solicit more money from you. Microsoft's trap is just as bad, if not worse than, Sony's.
The X Box is not here to stay. The system's sale was completely based on a demand for a multiplayer console first person shooter that was a closer to what the PC offered in comparision to the crap first person shooters released for the N64. The system sold on one mediocre title, whose time in the limelight is already nearing its end. Even games like Panzer Dragoon Orta can't save the system. The Saturn died and it had many many more excellent titles than the X Box. It too had games that some people claimed would sell the system after the consumer market lost interest in it; Burning Rangers, Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining Force III, and Panzer Dragoon Saga. All these games did was turned a disappointment into a tragedy, which is exactly what's happening with the X Box. Microsoft is quickly learning that they can't buy their way into the console market, and it's a shame that a few good games are going to lose notoriety due to being produced for a console that is going to be the next to fail in the American market. Not to mention the Japanese market in which the X Box sells less than the Dreamcast. The X Box will probably stick around somewhere in the market for a while. There'll probably even be an X Box 2. But their luck with the selling point that was Halo is going to be nearly impossible to reproduce.
Everything takes time. The Saturn's was a long and drawn out death, but it kicked the bucket eventually. The X Box is going this way too, just much quicker.

Actually I didn't MEAN to be 'deragatory" with my comments. I just tried to squeeze alot of info into a small space in a short amount of time. So, ANYWAY, I'll make this post short aswell, w/o using 'deragatory' comments.
Playstation is NOTHING more than a monopoly, for now. The MAIN reason the PS killed the Saturn is because the Saturn was made to be THE best 2D gaming console. Playstation was made for 3D. CASE CLOSED in short terms. (nothing to do with 'programability')
There are just too many points to argue on this situtation. I guess everyone should just buy what THEY like either way. (even though SO many people are still blinded by the PS2) PS2 is a great system aswell as the X-Box. X-Box will do fine in the US. In my OPINION, I believe that you will soon see a split down the middle between X-Box & Playstation in the future. As far as sales etc.
Anyway, I DO apologize to any one of Japanese decent I may have offened. (but, not to you MOG, ok chico?.....j/k
:p )
I know I'm horribly biased in saying this, but frankly I probably won't buy an Xbox for the simple reason that it comes from Microsoft. Those of you here that work in IT (Information Technology) can probably guess what I'm getting at.
My worry is that MS will continue to throw money at the market until they destroy Sony, Nintendo and even Sega, along with other companies both big and small. I'm afraid that the industry will end up like Nintendo back in the 8-bit days, where they charged huge licensing fees for their games and crushed anyone who even thought about making another game system (Sega, NEC, etc.)
Microsoft is well known for their Monopolies and heavy-handed business practices. Because of their monopoly my company really took it in the shorts financially when we had to renew our licensing agreement with them. My office alone will have to spend $18,000 a year just to have legal copies of Windows and Office.
Now before you flame, realize that I know Sony does the same shit and I'm not happy with them either, even though the PS2 is my favorite system simply because of all the games for it. My favorite system would still be the Dreamcast if it had not gone under. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[Crying]" />
I have to say when it comes to making an operating system Microsoft sucks big time. But they do make some really good hardware. And they are the only company that can afford to throw away large amounts of money to compete with Sony.
believe it or not sonys idea of integrating their
technology with other items isnt as stupid of an
idea as some might think.
hopefully by 2005 there will be a boom in broadband users
this enables things like downloading actual games
quests, online games being the norm.
constant communication like what the internet has
to offer.
sony already tries to integrate all their technology
and other people follow their products.
memory sticks?
lots of portable devices "not" made by sony uses
them as well as sony products.
sony is trying to make a new multimedia product
that universalizes things to make life a one stop
entertainment center.
who knows what small yet meaningful advances will
be made in the next 2 years.
we might even get the fucking flying cars i ve been
dreaming about all my fucking childhood.
god. its the year fucking 2000 and we dont have
flying cars. wtf.
but anyways. thats their plan as i see it.
not that microsoft doesnt have them by their pants anyways.
microsoft already has a built in hard drive and
broadband only services for the xbox.
they just havent been utilized at all yet.
the only thing i fear though is big brother.
it seems with everything integrated alot of spying
can go on. but thats a universal fear of mine
:)
Fuck this nonsense about Xbox and PS2. They both can suck a dick.
I'm going to play a real system that was developed for real gamers.
Have you hugged your Neo Geo today?
*hugs his Neo Geo*
call me crazy if you will, but I think Sony will start slowing down. xbox hasn't gained much ground. GCN and Xbox are close to dead even thought the xbox is slightly ahead.
All systems seem to gain popularity at one point, then die off. Sony hasn't really established ANY identity games that are awesome and that are not being made for other systems. What makes or breaks a system is the "this console only" games. Sega is the only exception to the rule :)

damn right i have?
have you polished yours?
I not that sure. Here is what I think.
The first system released is good.
Second released is the best.
The third system usally sucs.
I don't know If sony will go through that phase.
I hope not.
Well... Nintendo still produces superb units. their 3rd one (IMO ) didn't suck at all, it just didn't get the 3rd party support it needed.
Hopefully Xbox makes it to the 3rd unit. It has to do well in Japan.
†B†V†
with sony and microsoft, aren't you picking between two evils?
I'd rather have both of them out of the videogame arena permanently. Neither of them have contributed anything.
I will never buy a Sony product , and i am doing fairly well with no MS products. MS office seems to be required, so i am SOL there.
The way I look at it is Sony will push the PS3 as hard as it can. The main reason why it is coming out in the first place is because of the release of the X-Box. This scarred Sony and so it is now time to upgrade. It they were releasing it for any other reason (say the shitty work on the PS2) then it would have come out already.
Even though we all hear how Microsoft should not be in the games market, the truth is, Bill has invested millions into the X-Box and he never blows his money on ventures that fail. I really think the X-Box will become the dominating platform of the future. The hardware is brilliant, the games are good (for launch titles) and they have the biggest, richest company backing it up.
GAMEFAN
Gamefan,
I have to say, the money behind the Xbox will keep it afloat..... but I think there are ventures in which bill gates has lost before.
he is trying to penatrate the market..... Xbox made a splash..... but he had to spend 500 Million doing so(in just advertising). Their line is decent... at best.
Microsoft has never really suceeded in the gaming market. Most of their PC games sucked.....
Microsoft will take console gaming where it shouldn't be. and personally, I want my console totally separate from my PC.... that is why I buy both. MS is going to bring the 2 together, and we are going to see a total revolution in console gaming. Just think, in about 4-5 years..... console gaming as we remember and love it could be obsolete.
Nintendo is the only company trying to keep a console.... a console. Once we go online (a pretty cool feature), then we can have updates on the games..... then we are going to have console viruses..... you will see them soon.
Its kind of like "striving for graphical realism" is the plague of the gaming market Now, but trying to be like a PC will be the plague in the near future.
†B†V†
I believe that nintendo is the best company of the three in terms of thoghts and future planning. they look to the consoles as videogames . not DVD movie players or internet tools. I wouldn't mind seeing some games played on the internet ,but relying on it for everything I want to do in videogames is a horrible idea (that's sony)
as a fan of Sony. I don't want to see them losing the console war. and I hope they just focus on the videogames side
thats not in Sony's future plans unfortunately. Now they have some video player that is downloaded to the Sony hard drive for the Ps2....
it started with Xbox, and its snowballing downhill.

Square won't jump from Sony's shit any time soon considering Sony owns a portion of Square's stock (thank the Final Fantasy Movie for that). Square would be making games for the Cube (using their own name, not the name of the Square Startup that is doing the Crystals game for the Cube/GBA) if Nintendo had fronted the cash. Square would be making games for the X-Box if M$ fronted the cash (which would never happen, since more than likely NO Japanese company would even CONSIDER being partially owned by an American one, even if it was only a 10% share or something.)

All these are total bullshit.
I have seen many people trying their best just to show PS2's flaws but they can't even come up with a solid evidence that supports their arguments. The only thing i know is that people usually exaggerate on their PS2 problems and its hardware. And PS2's hardware is damn good although not as good as XBOX's.We have seen killer games on the PS2 and we have also seen what the PS2 can do when developers are able to exploit its power.PS2 is a good console and not as bad as some of you numbnuts pointed out.Just when i thought DKEX is gone....

Yeah, I know. I don't feel that calling the people "numbnuts" is really fair... some of them might not even have nuts ;) .
That said, the PS2 is sort of interesting, but I do have some complaints about it. Not really the VRAM or the programming, either. I have a problem with the lack of controller ports on the system. I mean, every other console now has four ports--Sony is just trying to get people to pay for a multitap. :p
Another problem I have is with the "front-loading" door. I just have a problem with this because it means more moving parts, which means more opportunity for failure. And a front-loading door is a bit harder to fix or work around than a top-loader (remember the spring from the PS1?)
But from what I've seen, I'm very impressed by many PS2 games. I do feel that certain games do not use the PS2's full potential, and indeed could've been easily done on a PS1 (Parappa 2). I think that part of the problems causing the PS2's lesser specs is the backward compatibility. Legacy compatibility is the ultimate double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows for a smoother transition. On the other hand, it doesn't allow for much advancement (look at MS's security problems for evidence; they'd probably have to tear down the code and rebuild it from scratch to be secure, but that's another rant.).
That said, the PS2 is a pretty good system. Sony's not the company I'd like to see as the dominant player (either Nintendo or SNK or a joint venture of both would fill that spot quite nicely :D ), but they do what they do well. I wouldn't count the other two out, though: Nintendo has a lot of heart, as they've been in this business practically since its outset; and MS has enough money that they won't be felled quite so easily. (then again, so does Sony, but you know what I mean)

haha
i hate the dual shock controller. the analog sticks are so badly placed. plus they are way too loose. they all analog button thing is completely pointless. the segmented d-pad still sucks cock. and i hate the f'ing symbols.
i'd say that the DC, GC, and Xbox S controllers are the 3 best suited to 3d games, where as the saturn jpn pad is still the best pad for 2d, and the dc one isnt half bad either, i actually like the d-pad. plus the dc controller ownz for racing games, no other controller comes close, even the S or XXL.
