Indeed. Imagine how this stuff will run 20 years from now. It'll be like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie.
They've just plain gone too far, Im down right sickened by this. I dont know how this could be legal.
That sounds like something a terrorist would say...Quote:

Yeah, watching me jerk off in my house will stop terrorism for sure.
Seriously though, this is pretty messed up stuff. I don't think people will allow it though.

I forsee many many employees being fired for trying to do just that. ^_^Quote:

At least its outside only. But, couldent the terrorists just go inside a gas station or safeway and chat away?

I sometimes wonder if the American population would ever let something like this happen. Are we really do desperate for "security" that we are willing to give up our privacy?
Even if they do set this up, there won't be a crack SWAT team ready to stop any crime. If anything, there will be an overweight security guard there watching the cameras, who wouldn't know a terrorist from a 90 year old woman. "Check it out, that elderly woman just bought a pair of fingernail clippers. Better take her down."

I couldn't agree more, shit happens just do what needs to be done in response. This is just taking it way too fucking far. Soon there won't be any privacy for anyone it will just become a net of paranoia when the gov starts looking into people's home trying to see who has eapons or seems "strange" that could be a threat.Quote:

SkyNet is apparently real. This is seriously a major step in the wrong direction for the future evolution of mankind. Not to also join the "name your movie of choice!" bandwagon but 'the things you own, end up owning you' is certainly applicable here. It defys any logical thought process I can muster to accept how somebody can invest time and resources into technology such as this.
W.I. Thomas once said,
'If man defines the situation as real, it is real in its consequences.'
Alienating people's privacy will only spur people to look over their shoulders as if they really were criminals, and those with nothing to hide only end up living constantly in doubt of the verity of their own actions. It's like 1984. Treat people like criminals and they will behave like criminal candidates. We don't need another era of McCarthyism.
Holy shit, the USA's turning into Mega City 1 eek!
Damn good post MegaDrive, and thanks for the heads up Kid Aphex.
Honestly though, trying to take something like this out at the polls won't do any good if Big Brother already has a hair up his ass to get the ball rolling on this. For that matter, do you think American citizens are happy with Mexicans flooding into the coutry, and then being allowed to stay most of the times they get in here? How come border policies are never put up for vote? That's the thing, if Big Brother already declares something okay, then piss on the little man opinion.
This sounds like something Pat Roberts was getting called a nut-case over about 13 years ago. Pat Roberts, head of the 700 Club, had this zany idea that if he were to get into a political office, he'd start what was termed "thought police". Acting under suspicion of "demonic activity" (I shit you not), trained people who could "sense evil" would be allowed to go into your house and arrest you. That simple. And yes, he was laughed at and mocked by loads of people, as he should've been.
And that's why it becomes twice as ridiculous sounding to me to hear that government is following a similar line. Instead of suspected demons, it's suspected terrorists.
I've thought it for a long time, but I honestly think if this passes, it'll be one more push to the break point. I don't think this plan alone would stir the people into a revolt against the government, but once a plan like this passes, and similar plans follow since the first of the type passed, I can see another Civil War. But this time, it's going to be a combination of North and South vs* a higher power. America was founded on wars and revolutions, and nothing is 100% guaranteed to last forever. Maybe over-confidence will be the ultimate downfall of Big Brother one day...

"Before, there was a reasonable expectation of privacy when you were walking down the street,"
Exactly what privacy do you really expect in an openly public place? In this case security cameras are offensive. And who here really thinks this woulc be working within a resonable amout of time? People going on about invasion of privacy in a public place really need to realize how many video and still cameras are already out there that were not put their by the government. How many stores have you been in with video surveillance? How many ATM machines do you use during a day?
Privacy -
1.The quality or condition of being secluded from the presence or view of others.
2. The state of being free from unsanctioned intrusion: a person's right to privacy.
2. The state of being concealed; secrecy.
Again how do you get privacy when you are in a public place surounded by other people? While you are at it you better go get those tourists with the video camera they are taping you.
Well I make it a point to Flip Off/Give The Bird to every Street Light mounted camera I see in any and all cities. I expect their must be a record of me in a freeze frame screaming the words "Fuck You" and flipping off the powers that be. But I don't care, if they want to start shit I'm ready right then and there (I won't elborate on that one, but I'm sure some of you can figure out the Fugue behind that statement).Quote:

To Lou Gojira:
Glad to see we think at least partially alike on some of this. Personally as much as it pains me, I know that it will take more than this to stir up the masses, and never expected any ppl going to the polls to change anything. America is just a powderkeg waiting to explode into another "Revolution" and I'll be right there on the sidelines saying to all the ppl who once thought me crazy: "See, told you so. You ready to fight now? If so, lock and load and let's sieze the day men! FACK these overlord pigs... let them hear our voice, and it forever resonate within the ears, as the will of a ppl too long asleep awake to the inherent nature that molded this great nation. We will not go silently... we will not give up. Our fallen fathers show us the way, and now we dig into the ground and with their blood are charged, to take back what was ours in our darkest hours! This is our time, and the third phase of American History will now find it's place in the annals of that very history, for little Toby... assuming there's anyone left who can think for themselves from this day forward to read about, build statues to... and live the glory of what REAL men before us died courageously for, and that we all pissed away until this whirlwind moment of truth. ONWARD MEN! TAKE NO PRISONERS!!!!!!!
Check out the synopsis/review for the Robert Kramer movie ICE at http://members.aol.com/shockcin/ice.html
The film is only available on 16mm at festivals (I'm hoping someone somehow releases this thing even bootleggedly on VHS someday, but I can see why it's kept so hard to get/distribute from reading this synopsis) This is where things are going folks, anyone who says differently is just eating up the candy covered shit the collective majority would have you believe. Usually if it sounds "NUTS" it's generally true and for some reason B.B. always wants to control the very ppl that are it's body. Well if we learned anything from history or Winston at Victory Mansions... Freedom is earned not a right, and if the flicker of light ever goes out for us it'll be because the ppl themselves lost the understanding of what "Freedom" really is and what it costs us to have it. It isn't just ppl in the military doing their thing in some far away land, or the Police Department. It's everyone understanding/living out their destines, while doing what needs to be done. So far were throwing it all away and quite frankly that sucks!

Powerful words there MegaDrive. You ever consider a running for office? wink
But then, what am I thinking telling you to run for office? Like the saying goes, if voting could fix anything, it'd be illegal.
That was very well said. The United States gov. is just plain stupid. They wont stop pulling off all this ludacris shit until everything is perfect. This is one of the main things I dont like about this country, the people who run it. They are so overprotective about everything, nobody can live a good life w/o the gov. trying to control people and watch after them.Quote:

I hear people tell me it's the gov. fault for kids acting bad since they took away prayer and ass wuppens away from school and that's a true statement. Megadrive is right about resistance becuase i'm not gonna let some people tell me what to and how to do things and i'm not going to let them watch everything I do.
What makes this security thing even worse is the fact that the minority in the U.S. will be in even more danger. Let's face it, blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans will get in trouble for looking suspucious with this thing going around. Everytime I go to a store, some nerdy muthafuckin' clerk follows me around thinking I'm going to steal something. It seems to me, the U.S. becoming more of a communist country because they want to control people and monitor their every move.
All in all, the U.S. needs to stop being the police of everybody and leave people alone.

Fuckin sick and unconstitutional to boot. Can someone say, "Matrix"?
Americans are no different than the people of so many nations before them: they are sheep.
Case in point: 9/11. A terrible tragedy, yes. But they made so many unbelieveably messed up decisions afterwards (in all three branches) that privacy rights were retarded in ways 99% of people just don't realize.
WHAT EVERY PERSON LIVING IN THE US SHOULD KNOW:
Did anyone notice that whole "Total Information Awareness" network that's being developed? (if you haven't you'll be really nervous)
- It's being developed for the Pentagon by DARPA (the real inventors of the internet)
- It will combine all the information on an individual in a way unprecedented in the history of mankind
- It was fast-tracked after 9/11, before that it was highly controversial
- There was a publicized public backlash when it was first revealed publically (complete with creepy logo that had an all-seeing eye)
- After the public outcry, all DARPA did was remove the logo, changed the name to the less facist "Information Awareness Office" but they still continue the EXACT SAME RESEARCH
- this is big brother!
If you think I'm blowing things out of proportion, here's their website, tell me what you think smirk

I honestly dont know what everyone is getting so upset about. Mabye it's because I don't fully understand the political situation in America, but In England the growing presence of survalance cameras has generally made people feel a lot safer on the street. Its kinda like always having a policeman nearby, only not as intrusive. I barely think about them at all.
But then again, I have nothing to hide.
It sounds like the 'upgrade' to the current camera system is simply there to aid those watching the monitors - so there is less chance of them missing anything important. Personally, I hope this technology finds its way over to the UK as it can only improve the system we already have in place.
Try to think about it from a perspective other than just the goverment trying to find something to jail you for.
What if you get the shit kicked out of you by drunken morons one night?
What if you get mugged?
What if you just plain fall and crack your head?
Survailance cameras can be used to spot all these things so the police can send some help. They are there to help you as well y'know (well they are in England - not sure about America because I dont live there).
The only people who really have anything to be afraid of are those that intend to break the law, so as a law-abiding citizen myself I couldnt give 2 shits what sort of cameras they have watching my every movement. Hell, they could watch me from the moment I get up in the morning, all through the day untill I get home. Shit, they could even watch me when I go to the Pub with my friends and they still wont find anything to jail me for, and I suspect the same would be true for 99% of the forum members here.
So, that does make me wonder why Megadrive 20XX is so upset about this. Just what exactly are you hiding Megadrive?? :p
Actually, I have no problem with public video cameras. I actually enjoy them.
The new program being developed (that I mentioned above) would scare the bejesus out of anyone.
#1.> I have nothing to hide, if I did I certainly wouldn't say shit like this (my freedom of speech at work and only cause the ppl have a means to resist is it there) in the open for the whole world to access to if they wanted to... and I say what I mean and I do what I say.Quote:

#2.> Further elborating on #1... You will never understand from our (I say Our point of view to those who agree more Government is getting out of hand) point of view as Americans. I mean for cryin' out loud you live in England! My forefathers spilt their blood, sweat and tears and soiled the ground fighting your forefathers to be away from your style of government and ridiculous ways of doing things. The rebels of England (i.e. The Colonial Americans) were wanting something more, so with a bit of help from France we kicked ass and won! The Constitution was then set up so that things could be better than what was going on in your neck of the woods. Hey if you're fine with being watched and all that, more power to you. Personally I've got a bullet for every fucker who wants to errode my rights and/or make me feel like a criminal when my forefathers died for the right of freedom.
#3.> Why is America free? Simple, it was the Second Amendment of the Constitution that allows us to have the first, which is "Freedom of Speech". It was made that THE PEOPLE would always have the means to resist (not win, I mean how can you have giant victories over agencies and armies with Gunships, Heat Detector Guns, M-1 Tanks etc.)... BUT THE MEANS TO RESIST, ANY FOREIGN OR DOMESTIC FORCES THAT WOULD SEEK TO SUBJUGATE THE PPL. As long as that right stands (as 1 million + NRA members lobby/fight for every year) the represenative government in this nation will not try a "Night of Broken Glass" anytime soon. They know too well that even the most complacent if forced to will fight, and you'd see everything from low rider driving Cholos with sideways pistols... to Militia... to every other law abiding citizen armed and ready to thwart off what they didn't like. It just takes other ppl longer to get with the program. The fact that DARPA has been doing teh bullshit that Bobak posted doesn't surprise me one bit. In fact I was made aware of that back in 1995, told all my buddies about it, but they just went on smoking pot and being dumb.
The bottom line is, enroaching on personal freedom/privacy is not the answer Toy Brain. I don't need some camera waiting to be the "good guy" should I fall down and crack my head open, and for once I think I speak for the majority of Americans in this fourm that would agree on that note. Nor do I need someone to know what time I take a shit etc. If you want to live in Victory Mansions in OCEANIA be my guest, you're already in the right nation for it. Just don't tell us decendents of Rebel Englanders (among other nations) to want to adopt anything even remotely Eurpoean/English, just because it works in your neck of the woods. We left you guys behind for a reason, you do your thing, we'll do ours. One of the few reasons I did like how Bush handled the IRAQ thing (even though I didn't vote for him)... because he was like: "I ain't waitning on the worthless U.N. or anyone else. If we have to, we'll (the USA) do this solo."
So on that note while Bush might be a tard in other areas, he's got my backing on the pulse of America's sons and what it should be. Thus give all your freedoms and rights to privacy away for the illusion of "Safety" if you want, I'll protect myself anyway I can with or without official intervention and when the day comes that I face the music... I will smirk at death himself and tell him where to shove it.
MD20XX / Storm Rider
The funny thing is that we'll probably be the alien race in a thousand years that flies around the galaxy wiping out planets and other extra terrestrials.
In my usual opinion, just because we have the power to attack weak nations like Iraq, or develop information mining databases that will track your every breath, shit, and thought - doesn't mean we should. To execute that kind of endeavor is purely vanity. Especially knowing that eventually, the person in control of your efforts (GWB) will probably have the IQ of a monkey's crotch (GWB), and abuse that power in a predictable fashion.
Might as well get this all out for DARPA, who is keenly interested in the going ons of ng.c

Something like this promises to be the final nail in the coffin of the Constitution, whose grave our loveable right-wing junta has been happily digging since 9/11. Every paranoid freedom-strangling desire they've ever dreamed of has been pushed through all in the name of keeping us safe.
I say this began the day the election was stolen.
The facts are facts people.
The problem that a lot of American's have with camera's on the street is the paranoia that those same camera's will be turned to look in their window. See Megadrive's last post. The only thing that scares me more than the government ever will are the hoards of psychotic "militia" groups present with in the USA.Quote:

that is disgusting, i can see it now, watching and recording our every moment, keeping an eye on us while we do nothing but live our lives. how dare they do such a heinous thing. i beleieve this country is founded on one all men being created equal, the pursuit of happiness, and finally a government by the people and for the people. and yet where are the people? why does the majority stand idly by while shit like this happens all around? when will these "proles" if you will, realize that there is something they need to do. something we all need to do, thoreau, and ghandi said it best, and dr. martin luther king jr restated it. we run this country, not the fucking governemt we have the power, not them i quote ghandi in saying "the government rules over the people, but when there are no people to rule over; there is no government." if this plan is really going into effect, and from the looks of this news article it already has, i say we fight, we raise our fists in anger against these the eyes of the beast. this is not freedom, it is not democracy it is fear and mediocraty if anything. our "government" is too afraid of some hidden enemies, that they feel the need to watch everything that goes on, and at the cost to the american working man. the bush regime once again devours the wallets and the minds of the people and for what? for security from these enemies that hide in the shadows waiting to pounce on a hapless victim, when in truth the enemy is self made. we helped to create the mess in south kores, afghanistan, iraq, and just about every other country that "harbors terrorists" we made our mess we spilled the wine on the white rug that is the world, but instead of cleaning it up with some resolve, we flipped the rug over. and now...now we have a real mess on our hands, a mess that we made, and a mess that the children that run our country didn't clean up then, and wont clean up now. so here we are, the citizens of this country left to clean up a mess we didnt' start, having to clean up after the kids, and we have to pay the cost, but should the cost of cleaning up the government's mess really be our rights?

Well, actually he posted rather a lot. In the interests of not cluttering up the messageboards with repeated text I'll ask everyone to just scroll up a bit if they need to read it again.
Well, England-bashing aside you made some fairly passionate points there. Obviously I have a general idea of the foundations on which America was built (through history lessons and TV documentries) but I'm never going to be able to 'get inside the head' of someone who is American born and bread.
But the concept of free speech is one that the UK embraces as much as the USA - and one which I agree with.
However, freedom of speech is not actually the issue here (I'd like to see the govenment computer system that's going to record your every single word and sound - along with your cash transactions and daily movements - must have one hell of a hard-drive array to store all that data), its what you do that they case about, not so much what you say .
Its also worth bearing in mind that there is no such thing as freedom for humans, at least not absolute freedom. We as a race (not just individual nations) have always lived by rules, right from when we were still swinging arround in the trees (they just wern't written down on paper then).
One persons freedom to walk in public without a security camera watching him, is another persons freedom to ram a knife in your back and make off with your wallet without fear of being caught.
Unlike you, not everone feels tough enough to protect themselfs from everyone else out there. So for those of us who come under the catagory of 'meek' (and apparently we'll be inheriting the earth someday so its important we'e protected :D ) sacrificing our 'privacy' in public areas (privacy in a public place?? odd concept) for that extra protection isn't such a bad deal.
You trade some of your freedom for some extra protection. Well, I doubt that idea would appeal to you, and I never have fully understood the deep, psychological meaning of the American constitution - so mabye I'm missing something fundamental here, but in the UK I've met few people who really object to being watched by cameras. Most people seem to find they give a sense of security.
As for DARPA - well, as long as it is covered by the Data Protection Act (or whatever the USA version of that is - might even be the same thing)it dosent just have to be a source of incriminating evidence against you. As long as you've done nothing wrong it could just as easily be your lifetimes alibi, alowing you to produce a record proving yourself innocent of any illegal activity.
Obviously it's a problem if your government decides it has the right to falsify information (always a scary thought) - which is where the data protection act comes in......

Indeed. Imagine how this stuff will run 20 years from now. It'll be like something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie.

Looks like it's time to move to another minimally populated country, force them out, and have another glorious rebirth :DQuote:

Ain't that the truth...since that is what this country was actually founded on.

I imagine reruns of Chappelle's Show would have the same effect, but I digress. :D
Man now our lives will be just like 1984, but with a twist.
If I met the guy who thought of that idea I would kick him in the nuts like the guy in my sig is doing.
