I unearthed this turd today in MAME, and good lord. MK2 is still a pretty fun game, and was visually impressive back in the day (although I always preferred SF). But the likes of Stryker and Nightwolf and the robo-ninjas make me cringe.

The robo ninjas were ok, but yea Striker and Nightwolf were just ridiculous. Was definately a pathetic follow up to MK2.

MK3 was terrible, but it did have one thing that I thought was very fucking cool at the time, and still do today

how freaky is that, to have both characters changing into other characters during the fight? it gets quite chaotic, it was a lot of fun.
and anyway, the characters in MK3 weren't bad as the ones in say, Time Killers or Survival Arts...

Was it just me, or was MK3 also much much more difficult than MK1 or 2. Those two games I could clear, MK3 and MK Trilogy were beyond my level.
I tried to get some of my Japanese friends to play some MK Trilogy for the PSX with me a few years ago... they wouldn't take it seriously and they kept complaining about how crappy it and other American games were. I had to put it away in the end, and drag out the DC so we could play CvsSNK2.

MK3 was a joke. They had so many robo/regular ninjas it was terrible. Shit, add in a dozen shotos and you got yourself a winning vs game.

The bosses stage was ripped from Akira though, it was set to look like the elevator leading down to Akira's cryogenic chamber. I forgot to mention that in the Akira-inspired-video-game-art thread awhile ago.

MK3's cast was abysmal. Everyone hates Stryker, but Sindel just screams (no pun intended) "B-Movie Bad Grrrl". The robot ninjas don't look robotic in the least; just a skinny guy in spandex with a cheesy one-color plastic helmet and chest-guard. That stuff's campy by "Power Rangers" standards. Actually, most of the cast looked like the belonged on that shite TV show.
Nightwolf's concept wasn't *too* bad, but how they thought a supposed Native American wearing a leather vest with sky-blue tights would be taken seriously is beyond me.
Kabal, I believe, is the only character post-MK2 that I'd consider a good idea. All the rest are just...blech.
DoA, on the whole, is just a bunch of stereotypes and fan service. Nothing to add to that.

I'd argue that for the most part, part 3's of damn near every fighting series go awry. SF3 (first version), MK3, Alpha 3 (yeah you heard me fuckers), Vampire Savior, Samurai Shodown III.
The lone exceptions would have to be Tekken 3 and KoF'96.
On Nightwolf: By "concept" I meant ideas in general, not just his appearance, though you probably realized that. Heck, his appearance was retarded (although, to be perfectly honest, I can't tell if it's that much WORSE than T. Hawk -- his "dizzy" stance. 'Nuff said). But some of his moves (like his materializing hatchet and bow/arrows) were cool IMO. He had potential as a character, but they just fudged his design.Quote:

And I forgot to mention one of the biggest offenders of MK3: JAX!!! WTF were those metal arms about? Did he become a cyborg? Just looked stupid, and tacked on for no apparant reason. FYI, I DID like Kano and Sonya's re-design, and to a lesser extent Kung Lao, since he was an AWESOME character to begin with.
And on the infamous fighting game "3=jinx": no arguing that. The only characters in the 'third' titles I've liked thus far have been Queen Bee (although I still think she looked like she should've been in Capcom's D&D series), Karman Cole (secret service lookalike = badass), and......
......
....well, that's it. :(
Alpha 3 was crappy overall too, IMO. Endings were a joke (if I have to see Vega/Bison in that 'blowing up' end scene one more time...), backgrounds were SHITE compared to those in A2 (and in general...sort of like Mega Man X5 to X4), and for new characters? Cody, once king of Final Fight, a jailbird? Karin, Sailor Moon reject? R. Mika, bastardized SNK-style grappler (albeit one with a nice tuchus)?
'Course, the DoA series was crap to begin with, so nothing surprising happened there. wink
