Anyhow, anyone have any thoughts on this. I'm kind of looking forward to it. I hope it's as good as they make it look.
I've no experience with any of their other products though.

I'm taking a "wait and see" approach to this. On paper it seems awesome for the HDTV owner, but none of the clones has ever managed to get everything quite right, not once. I was looking forward to the Retron3 when it was released as well, and although it got a lot of things right there were still issues that kept me from buying it. I was looking forward to the Hyperkin Supaboy too, but it had quality issues as well.
That sounds really negative, but I really do hope the Retron5 turns out great. Original carts+controllers, HDMI input, selectable video options, Gameboy Advance and Famicom support, it's all good on paper. Hell, now that I think about it it may be worth the price of admission if the GBA part works well and I can use the Super NES controller with it.
i was there for the reveal. its not perfect, but it is 95% close to real hardware.
i am getting one myself. if only to have a 'go to' game testing system that can handle everything.
i really dig the thing. and the (supposed) price is right.
Sounds good. But I'd rather wait for some customer reviews first.
The reviews of heard of their older products have been basically that it's cool, but has lots of little issues. The hardware is all emulated, so sound isn't always perfect, the games don't always play 100% correctly, but it works. I know there were issues with the Retcon3 where not everything worked using the same video out... Some people were miffed about that, but for a single little console that can play just about anything retro you throw at it... It's damn cool.
The article in the Master System issue of Retro Gamer Magazine says they will support the console with firmware updates, so here's hoping that they can fix any glaring issues with the emulation and not "brick" the RetronN5 a la Tommo.
I'm interested after reading the article, hopefully it can serve all of its purposes well.
Also, after reading the posted article I'm interested at gameboy emulation as well, BUT I would never put Platoon on the NES in any of my systems what a @#$* game, that is one game I don't care if they can emulate properly.
I had one of those Yobo consoles myself that played NES games. Fired up Crystalis and, it was missing at least 2 sound channels. Put that back in the box.
It sounds interesting but, I want to hear what the "issues" are before I buy it. The ability to firmware update does sound promising, though.
Jon
This is one of those cases where it is too good to be true. I know the 3rd model had a ton of issues and the emulation was poor. Hopefully they hammer them out because it would be nice to have an all in one system to save space.
Horrible looking tart of a device. The only thing marginally interesting about it is the gba support.
i wonder which open source emulator they stole without permission to incorporate into this
I think I'm in the same boat as well. I want to wait and see how it is before I decided to dip my feet in. They sound like they've listened to all the complaints and I really like the on board save states since I don't want to risk breaking any carts trying to replace a battery. I really hope it does most of what their saying and they have better sound emulation. I know it won't be 100% accurate but if you can't get the jumping and coin sound effects in the first Super Mario Brothers to work right then you gotta get back to the drawing board.
Firmware updates? Am I the only one having a bad case of deja vu here?
I really hope it turns out to be good. I want to enjoy some NES again. I've been looking into other options but am waiting to see how this turns out.
I'm gonna wait for the reviews as well. I don't care how many different systems are incorporated... If the sound's not right I don't want it.
From all the different videos and such I've seen I really have high hopes for this.
Anyhow went ahead and preordered a black one.

Honestly looking forward to this more than any of the next gen systems.
I agree, I'm looking forward to it also. The only thing I care about is if the HDMI out looks good, but I'll wait for reviews when it comes out before I pull the trigger on it. I don't really "need" the system since I have the ability to play all the games it supports on a CRT, but being able to play on the HD TV is what I'm really interested in.
I actually got a hands-on with this thing at MGC last year.
it's pretty damned cool, but i didn't get the finished product, so things can still change.
by far though, the thing that impressed me most was the damned controller; it's actually really good.
I didn't get a chance to test the GBA side of things, they had Street Fighter Alpha 2 running on the snes side, and Kirby's Adventure running on the NES, but that was it.
but both of them seemed to run damned near perfect, if not completely so.
(alpha 2 is still a crappy port though)
I have never understood buying something for emulation purposes... no matter how close they get it to the real thing, a PC emulator is going to do a better job and you presumably already have a PC.
My philosophy is, if you're going to pay you may as well get the real thing. If you're going to emulate you may as well go for the best emulation possible, and do it for free.
I had to talk a buddy of mine out of dropping 60 bucks on a Genesis clone the other day. I told him to either buy a real Genesis or, if he wants an approximation of a Genesis, just emulate the damn thing on his PC.
Thats pretty much how I used to feel about the subject for quite a long while.
However emulation on a pc is really not for me. I want to play console games on a console. The knock off systems have not been that impressive to me either.
This new retron setup up though looks to have a lot of promise. Still hardware emulation, I'm kind of hopes that it wil be the best features of emulation with console ease of use. The hdmi improvments are really what I'm looking forward about.
Also it looks to be rather kid friendly. I kind of feel like this system will fill a bit more of a need than the other third party setups so I have high hopes for it.
though it could just be the next neo geo x. I'm glad I cancled my preorder for that thing.
C'mon, Scoops! The clone has TWENTY built in games! Classics like Altered Beast and Sonic Spinball!
i preordered mine. at the very worst it will be a solid testing station for carts. at best its gonna be a new corner stone in my rig where i don't need a million things plugged in at once.
The Gameboy support actually has me more interested than anything.
I'll have to see if the controllers are cheap plastic first. If they are easy to mod, then i'll prolly get one too.
The video wont be perfect enough for purists, but HDMI is pretty sexy. I can take my classics out of the "basement" and put them back in the home theatre.
Any real pics that aren't just CAD renders?
Is Hyperkin ever going to announce a proper release date? I know the page on Amazon is a placeholder with the Halloween release date. As I said before, I really like the idea they have but I'm going to wait and hear the reviews from folks that buy it. I'm always leery on clone systems, but I do love that I can have multiple systems in one. I might even hack the back of my Power Converter to see if it can play Master System games too.
This work for ya?

And now you can use your sega power base converter on it as well.

pre order pages have dropped off everywhere.
I'll probably wait for the second revision to come out.
I'm kind of excited, but I'm not touching it until I see some reviews.
Sweet. Now I don't have to hack the back bit of my Power Converter to use it on this. I had heard that it worked on their other systems but you really had to take off much of the back in order for it to fit. I think they said it wasn't compatible with the 32X though.
They've been posting videos of the games running on the system, that's the PAL version of Mario 3 with some shaders. Looks too smooth to me so I'll shut them off. The video says the audio enhancements are on, so while most of the sound effects sound right the bass in the music is really loud. It's not as jarring as some of the other clone systems I've played so hopefully it'll be much better since they've been listening to customer feedback.
They are putting out a lot of videos showing off game play.
I think this is one of the best ones so far as it shows changing the settings.

Is it just me or are the scanlines fucked?
Yeah, they're not all even thickness. You can see the problem more clearly in the Aladdin video as they turn on the scanlines without the filtering:

I believe this is the ugliest console case I have ever seen.
A guy at a nearby independent video game store got me a little hyped on this for a minute... It looks kinda neat on paper, but that was before the Neo Geo X. I'm really not up for buying something too good to be true.
-There's the original hardware to play on the CRT TV the way it was meant to be, and also the Wii VC
-There's Wii U Virtual Console and PSN releases for emulation on the HD TV
-I could always use my PC/hook up my PC to the TV for that too... & I have my Games For Windows SFIV pad and PS2 to USB adapter too
I don't see that as being something worthwhile. If (and I say if) the HD TV actually looks good, then people who already have the carts would be good for this system. I don't think the drive is great enough for people to rebuy digital versions of games they already have. Even myself, I don't NEED a retron because I can play all the games already on CRT. But if it looks good on an HD TV then it will be worth the purchase. Also considering I am out of ports on my switch box for my CRT.
Yeah, I'm still looking forward to this. More so than the other systems comming out at this point.
I only said that because to me, the draw for this type of machine is the HDMI output and convenience of one device being able to play games from different platforms. I rebuy digital versions of classic games all the time, to have them available to play in different rooms, or on handhelds. That's actually why I was originally interested in the NeoGeo X too. Too bad it turned out to be below expectations. I don't know... maybe I spend too much on games or maybe I'm lazy haha.
This thing reminds me of a mvs 4 slot. If this thing can be modded with a jamma connection, it could potentially be quite a versatile mobo in a cab.
Looks like a cheap slut that will take anything. I always struggled watching DP porn, i think this thing gives me that same sick feeling. Just too many holes to be filled at once,
Drakon. Ugh.
