The procedure follows Guantanamo’s “Standard Operation Procedure” for force-feeding, a document that surfaced on Al Jazeera earlier this summer. The manual, which notes that some detainees have been on hunger strike since 2005, explains: “Just as battlefield tactics must change throughout the course of a conflict, the medical responses to GTMO detainees who hunger strike has evolved with time.”

The Brooklyn-born musician emerged as a hip-hop star in the late 1990s alongside Talib Kweli in their duo Black Star. He has acted in a variety of television series and films, and also has a history of political activism. I'm against force feeding but Mos Def had nothing more than a nasopharyngel insertion, something millions of people get in a hospital every day, some children have to do this them self twice a day and I never saw such a reaction unless they put wasabi on the end as lube .

Boy, people are sure hard to please. No matter what the military does with these people there is always an outcry.

There would be an outcry if we killed all these people on the battlefield instead of taking them prisoner.

There would be an outcry if we let these people die instead of force feeding them.

And people would probably complain if we didn't try our best to extract information from these people before more of our soldiers died. e.g. waterboarding, which is torture in the very loosest sense- it doesn't even cause permanent damage, unlike the kind of torture that these people would do to our troops..

i don't really have a solid stance on this matter so i'm not speaking in favor of anything but i can imagine there's some pretty hefty long term psychological damage done to the people that have been waterboarded repeatedly

feeling like you're going to die can have a hugely negative impact on ones mental stability

so i don't think it's entirely logical to shrug waterboarding off just because there's no physical damage being done

Agreed. I've seen this done in hospitals numerous times and have never seen this bad of a reaction to it. Granted it's not comfortable or easy but the lidocaine jelly used generally numbs everything up. And I've mainly witnessed nurses perform the procedure. The Docs rarely get involved. The rare times a dr is involved is if the patient has had a bad trauma and they have difficulty getting the tube down due to their injuries and have to insert the tube under fluoroscopy.

are the patients you witnessed receive this in a hostile environment and strapped into a chair?

They don't like it when we torture them, they don't like it when we (allegedly) murder them in their cells, they don't like it when we put hoods on their heads, sodomize them, and take pictures! So we try assassinating them with fairly reliable signature drone strikes instead, and they get mad about that, too! There's no pleasing these people!

1. IMO, Mos Def decided it was going to be unbearably traumatic before he ever sat in that chair. The whole sobbing thing afterward just seemed too over the top to me.
2. Prisoners who eat don't get force fed. It's not trauma for trauma's sake.

3. And before it comes up, though I found the two reminiscent, waterboarding is a form of torture and shouldn't be equated with the discomfort of force feeding. With waterboarding comes real risks like suffocation, stroke and psychological trauma afterwards. Hitchens reported having nightmares of drowning for some time after he underwent the "session", for example.

The men held there are prisoners of war subject to all pertinent international law the US has chosen to abide by.

When their prison sentence is up, as prisoners of war, they need to be released.

The Hunger strike is a trickier issue. I'd probably let them die, but then it's hard to say because I wouldn't hold prisoners indefinitely without charge.

and just to add- feeding can also be done intravenously. so rather than choosing the most traumatic way possible, there are other options available.

You're right Duf', I was pretty much just complaining for complaining sake. I was highlighting the hypocrisy of the American people in that it seems no matter what you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I don't disagree with anything you've said. These people should not be held indefinitely without charge. Gitmo should be shut down. Personally, I'd let the hunger strikers die too.

However, I feel that next time if these people are caught on the battlefield they should not be taken prisoner. I'd release them and tell them that if you are caught in the field of battle and carrying a weapon you will be shot on sight.

We should have never gone there in the first place, but what's done is done and we need to do damage control and clean this shit up. Closing Gitmo would be a good step toward that, but if Obama won't do it no one will.
