Wii: Zelda - Skyward Sword

Didn’t see a thread for this, so thought I’d start one. I know there are not a lot of Wii players here, but looks like the early reviews of Skyward Sword claim that it is pretty awesome. IGN has given it a 10 and seem to suggest it may be the best Zelda ever. I’ll be the judge of that (:))...but nice to hear that kind of praise since I was not too crazy about Twilight Princess..or the recent DS games.

So many good games coming out this holiday season, and I don’t really have the time right now for any of them, but the nintendork in me will probably force me to get this on release. Maybe even pre-order the LE w/ that snazzy gold wiimote.

Wow 10/10 is saying something, sure enough.

It will be sure to be epic. It's a MUST own in every home.

First good reason to fire up the Wii in a while ;)

I'm surprised to hear that. I played it last month and the controls were god awful. I even re-calibrated the wiimote and reset the console.

Here's IGN's Video Review. Really gonna ruffle some feathers when you say it's better then OOT, but for me my favorite will always be Link to The Past.

I'm glad I went for the special edition that comes with the soundtrack and Wii Motion Plus, it gives me an excuse to get one. I'm also glad I've kept away from seeing a lot of footage or reading anything about it. Sounds like it's going to be really good.

Most reviewers are giving 10/10 or perfect scores to all kinds of games these days...waaaaayyyyy too easily; not saying this game doesn't necessarily deserve it, just a cometary on reviewing in general these days.

I'm getting this one albeit reluctantly, maybe because I miss the Zeldas' of yesteryear like A Link to the Past, but mostly because I'm really getting tired of not being given the option to use a standard NON-MOTION CONTROLLED control scheme. I get my work out when I go for a run, I would prefer to play the game in the style of the older Zelda games and focus exclusively on the story and puzzles.

I was thinking about it a while ago and I realized I hadn't truly enjoyed a Zelda game in many, many years. I haven't really enjoyed a Mario game either. I'm not sure if that's a reflection of their quality or whether I've just grown out of 'em. (I suspect it's the latter.)

Either way I won't bother with this for a long time I think. Nintendo games take too long to get cheap, and I'm not going to pay full price for this.

Mario & zelda have become repetitive to no end.... it seems nintendo intend on milking them until the VERY LAST DROP.....
And yeah who still read/watch reviews 10/10 does that mean this game have NO flaw? I feel like the grumpy old man: Get off my lawn!!!

Unfortunatly this game, as ninny said, is not going to get cheaper anytime soon so maybe i will get to play it in a couple of years or so....

Yeah, post 16-bit Zelda games have become very formulaic and stale. I'd say the only ones I truly enjoyed were Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker.....but I lost interest in Majoras Mask, Minish Cap, the DS games and Twilight Princess....I never could find the motivation to finish any of them. But supposedly Skyward Sword does shake things up abit...not only in regards to the controls...but also in the approach to problem solving and the dungeon formats.

Despite the hype, I'm not expecting anything revolutionary....but I am hoping that this will be a fresh entry to the series thats better than the last few releases.

I need to buy a Wii for this and maybe to replay some GC games.

Ocarina is great and everything, but Link to the Past is phenomenal. It's always been my favorite.

if anything, each zelda game is designed to be My First Zelda to some youngster. and i've got nothing against that. but what is up with adults looking forward to this? it's the same, each game. move on already.

Theres a lot more to zelda then that. Some people like playing a verry similar game with a differnt story so i see nothing rong with it. I happen to love zelda while some arn't my all time favorite its still a good series. They all seem the same but each title has something that makes it differnt from the last while have yet similar game play in them all.

I don't need any retarded reviews to tell me I likes me some Zelda. Day one.

I am going to have to disagree.

A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess are the most similar of any games in the series but beyond those there is actually quite a bit of difference between any two Zelda games. Adventure of Link, Four Swords, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Spirit Tracks, and Oracle of Ages are all very unique titles. They're obviously tied together by the swordplay and dungeons, but that's like saying all Mario games are the same because they all have jumping and platforms.

I have played every game in the series and I continue to look forward to new entires because of the clever dungeon and puzzle design. When I play a Zelda game I feel like great care was given to every aspect of the game rather than the current standard of lazy, paint-by-the-numbers yearly sequels (Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Madden, etc). The devil is in the details and that's what Nintendo is best at.

Can't wait to play this. Want it so badly!

Why do people keep saying Zelda and mario are the same game over and over? The very reason that I don't play those damn games anymore is because they are all so damn different from the next.

Finally a reason to dig my wii out of storage.

Exactly how I feel. At least about Mario anyway.
I welcome each Zelda game being different. I'm less interested in the characters (they're pretty much one-dimensional anyway) as I am the adventure so it gets a pass.

This is exactly the same as me. I specifically have avoided reviews for this title.

Zelda games are like endless pits for me. The games are so full of content that I just lose myself in them completely. I'm looking forward to this one specifically because I want to see what Nintendo, a company I've lost most of my faith in, can still deliver the goods.

And I want to see it without having any preconceived notions created by review sites.

I mean, it's Zelda. IMO, the most consistently excellent series, game to game, ever made. Of course it'll be a good game. But will it be for me? We're gonna find out, golden controller and all:)

Thematically, they're similar. That's it. You're on a quest to stop Gannon. There are dungeons, a girl named Zelda some castles and towns and some weird side quests.

But they're different dungeons, different puzzles, different level designs. They wear the same green tunic and stocking cap, but they're mostly different games from one another.

Siding with Famicommander on this one because he is right.

BTW, I noticed a lot of people were getting their knickers in a twist over this review from EGM. What do you guys think?

I'm really interested in this game, loved the series since it's inception. Alas, no Wii in my household, but I'll borrow one and the game from my sister once she's completed it.

That said, I still despise motion controls (I played Twilight Princess on the GC)

To all of you nay-sayers about Majora's Mask, you obviously don't understand the point of that game.
It's completely different from OoT, and way more fun to complete at 100%.
Link to the Past and Majora's Mask are the best made Zeldas ever.
No dungeon is as well made as MM Stone Tower. It's simply genius.
Twilight Princess isn't crap, it simply is worse than the rest of Zelda's. Hopefully this one is better.

PS: Link's Awakening kicks balls.

I hated the endings in both of the N64 Zelda games, especially Majora. You go through all of that and they pretty much tell you to go fuck off and you're not even invited to the party. With OOT it's like, oh thanks for doing this, but you're not supposed to be here so we're just going to wipe all your memory that this ever happened. Other then that I loved them. They brought Zelda into 3D right. I also liked Wind Waker but the game was way too easy. I'm glad they took much of the map collecting out of the US version compared to the Japanese but there was a little too much for me of wading around in the water trying to find the right spot to drop the claw to find a chest.

The Game Trailers review felt like it was being done from somebody with a bipolar disorder. They praise the game, like how they say the graphics for the Wii look great, then the next line is saying how garish they look in certain spots. It's like they didn't want to fully praise the game so they had to throw in some harsh words. Personally just like Famicommander, I don't need a review to say I need to buy a Zelda game. I know it's pretty much the same thing over and over again. It's the same with all the FPS shooters and yearly sports games, it's the same thing, but people want new so we always buy them. I also love how they go on about the game having a great story, but say how it still lacks voice work. As a Zelda fan since the start I hope they never put voices into Zelda. We've put up with the voices from The Super Show and of course the CDI games. I don't want to see it turning into Another M where you want the characters to shut up.

Kudos for someone not just hoping on the "its perfect" band wagon.
Its also great to see everyone get so huffy over one person not LOVING their beloved zelda series. I've personally never finished one, I always get bored 5 hours in or so. LttP was easily the most fun, but after my cart whiped my data a few times I lost interest

I just watched the gametrailers review and thought it was fair. The comment about the graphics was stating that it looks good, but not always...which is a common comment for Wii games. The take home message was that its a fun title, but it feels dated, and that is a fair comment. We are years beyond those CDi games and I find it silly that you'd think a 2nd attempt at voices in a zelda game would end up like that.

I obviously haven't played the title, but I felt what they said makes sense, its like picking Goldeneye, its fun and it is a good game, but it is running off of themes and concepts of yesteryear, and that is what it sounds like Skyward Sword does.

Sorry guys, But Adventure of Link is the best.

Since Moe just brought the 3DS into this, I will say two things. I FINALLY played the 3DS in a store just the other day, and I am super impressed by the 3D. Really was impressed! I'm buying one for my son, but you better know I will play it here and there. ;)

Anyhow, back to Zelda. The preview also makes the game look awesome. Yes, some have said that every new Zelda is pretty much the same game over and over, and it assumes the player has never played Zelda before, but that's what make it cool. This review makes the game look fantastic. I saw a new Zelda was coming out on the TV the other day and just said "who cares?" But now, after seeing everything.... I care. ;)

That IGN review basically disregarded all third party games which use motion controls. If anything it's proof Nintendo created a platform that only they could work with.

Don't care about reviews saying how perfect this Skyward Sword is. The DS versions of Zelda all got good reviews, yet I hated playing them.

If Skyward Sword doesn't turn out to be great, then I might give up on the Zelda series for good. Too much butchering, just to appeal ordinary gamers. :buttrock:

Otherwise I will just stick to the series post Twilight Princess.

Not interested. I could play Zelda, Zelda II and LttP over and over again but the 3D Zeldas are pretty horrible.

Holy shit, this is an outstanding post. I've been saying for years that IGN has questionable reviews at best (and worthless reviews at worst), and you've proven it here pretty handily.

It seems pretty clear that they're happy to suck the dick of any game with 'Zelda' in the title, no matter what. Those are reviews that any reasonable person ought to ignore.

They have a point. If you don't count the NES, the Gameboy, the Gameboy Color, the Gameboy Advance, the DS, the 3DS, the N64, the Gamecube, the Satellaview add-on, and hell even the CD-I, there's not many consoles out there with more than one Zelda title.

Wow man, I dare say that's akin to never knowing of goatse or tubgirl.

Getting off work in a few hours, then heading to Walmart at 7am to hopefully snag a gold wiimotion+ bundle. If they're already gone there, I'll head to Target and wait for them to open at 8. I know the preorders sold out everywhere that took them in no time. It seems my only hope is to try elsewhere this morning. Already up to $112.0 on Amazon...
The gold wiimote isn't really that big of a deal for me, but I never bought the first wiimotion+ attachment, and I'd rather have the built-in style if I'm gonna have one at all.
