So... preordering...
I pay someone early to not receive the game until after launch...
....while a thousand people are playing the game on JustinTV a month in advance.
And this isn't just for mvc3... same thing happened for SSFIV, BBCS, BBCT, DR2... pretty much every game I've ever thought about preordering for the last year.
Someone hook me up with a scalper in Chicago. I'll pay an extra $20-40 to play a month early.
I'm with ya. I never pre-order games. I'm happy driving to best buy on release day and playing it that day. Why worry about (or pay) shipping?
I can understand pre-ordering online to get some bonus material you just can't live without, but other than that I don't see the point. And I definitely wouldn't expect to be playing it on day one.
I pre-order to get the bonus content. On big name releases they always have enough copies on release day so if there no bonus I just get it on release day.
In my town there aren't really a lot of places to get video games. I pre-order a lot at best buy because you get bonus reward points a lot of times (or even free gift cards depending on the purchase) so I save $10-20 on a game a couple times out of the year.
I've pre-ordered firearm parts before :emb:
I haven't pre-ordered a game since Mortal Kombat II on the SNES. Just to much of a hassle.

I preorder most of my games through Gamestop, the major titles anyway. It's what I've done for the past thirteen years in order to guarantee that I have a copy of the new hotness, on day one. Those folks who have the hookup and work at (or either know people that work for) businesses that break retail street dates, hey...that's awesome, I actually somewhat envy you. But I am a sheep, my preorder is secure, comfortable and I kind of like that little automated phonecall from that girl, "Amy...from Gamestop", who reminds me of that preorder I made oh so long ago.

Why give gamestop money months in advance when you could easily drive to any store that actually stocks shelves instead of just fulfilling preorders + 2 shelf copies like gamestop does? It doesn't pay to preorder most games, especially with many stores running nice promotions that you never find out about until release week.

1) Guaranteed "early" (ie: release day) copy
2) Loot
I could care less about 2 in most cases, but damnit man... I'm just burned out on preordering games, then watching JustinTV streams of them for a whole month before I get my copy. And they aren't streams from businesses or promoters - they're Bob down the street that has gotten bored with the actual game play and has now created downloadable images for anyone to go grab....

If I order from Capcom, I better get it before the bootleggers do....

I order all games from Amazon now and have for a while. If it's something I know I'll want, I just preorder it because you end up getting the best deal/incentive they have up until it ships. They keep me coming back with $10 and $20 credits towards future game purchases that I get with nearly every game I order.
As for shipping, it's 99 cents for release day and even sometimes that's free. Come home from work and there it is waiting at my door.
Yeah, this. I don't pre-order much anymore, but any time I do, it's amazon now. Usually the best price, most reliable, free shipping. Even if you did have to pay 99 cents, that's probably less than you'd spend in gas driving somewhere.Quote:

Well this was my first and last order from Capcom. What a clusterfuck. I called up asking where my order was, I told the guy I placed the order in the beginning of January and all I was told that it was "in process" and I couldn't cancel the order. He tells me "wait two or three business days and you should be getting an email for where your order is" I told him the site has said the order has already been "in process" for three days and nothing has changed and he told me there was nothing he could do.
Why the fuck didn't I go to Amazon. You'd think if you went directly to the manufacturer they would have the product first, right? Amazon has been insane. They've got low prices and even when you use Super Saver Shipping the shit I get takes not even two days to get to my house. For now on I'm going to Amazon with all my shopping needs. Fuck the rest of these clowns.

Preordering games that play online is sort of pointless. If it is released in limited quantity, you wouldn't find anyone online to play with anyways, and if the quantity shipped is huge, there wouldn't be a problem picking it up from a store on day 1 which renders the preorder itself unnecessary.
In the rare occasion that I pre order a game it is something that will not be released outside of Japan. Though the very few new games I buy I could care less about playing on the release date.
Yeah, I only pre-order to get Collector's Edition games (Metal Gear Solid series, Street Fighter IV, MvC3, etc).
Those are usually only available via pre-order, or else you're just taking a chance that they won't sell out by the time you can get to them. The only other reason I ever pre-order something is if I absolutely know that I'm getting it anyway, then I'll pre-order it at Play N' Trade. They give you a $5 or $10 store credit when you do it there....
I went ahead and preordered Marvel from Amazon. I wasn't gonna but I had a lot of credit from trade ins. Also, no sales tax, so I saved six bucks.
To those who preodered through Capcom, was the t-shirt, small discount, and economy shipping really worth it?
Back in the day I pre-ordered the second run of Steel Battalion from Capcom.
I'm kind of sad no other company has put out such a unique title with an off the wall awesome controller such as that.

The only preorders I've made over the years involve imports that either come here a year later or not at all. Preordering anything else seems pointless to me.
I used to work at GS. For big releases, they tell employees to just sell all copies to walk-in customers. One email about GTA IV said (paraphrasing, but accurate) "If they don't have time to pick it up today, they don't care enough / deserve it." Any Nintendo game or any AAA release they'll did this with. It really sucks telling people, "Yeah you paid $5 (or more) for us to hold a game for you but we didn't hold it for you anyway." Dunno if they've changed since I left, but I somehow doubt it.
Games are big business now. Best Buy likely has roughly 100 copies of any new game on day one, so that's what I rely on. As for limited/collector's editions, I don't care about those at all.
But then, the only game I've purchased on day one in the last few years was Donkey Kong Country Returns and Best Buy had a seemingly endless supply of those, so maybe I don't have any perspective on this...
I currently have an NGP and a 3DS on preorder at Gamestop. :emb: I'll probably preorder Monster Hunter Freedom 3 from them too. :emb::emb:

I think we do pre-order as only for 2 reasons :
1. Cheaper prices, with limited promotional addition bonus, or something related to promotion
2. Afraid of the pre-order items instantly sold out in store just after released

I preorder basically any Japanese game or figure release since I can't be fucked hunting down that shit after it's been released. Of course I don't like seeing my stuff on Amazon.co.jp for half price, but it happens. It's also the cost of preordering.
American games are pretty much valueless here, everyone's worried that they won't work on their console or people want the PAL versions. They also take quite awhile, and most eBay sellers either offer Airmail shipping (which is untracked, and slow) or $30+ USD shipping.
Considering that I wouldn't even get $30 USD, unless it was a massively popular region-free title, and only if I were to sell this immediately after playing, it just isn't worthwhile.

Actually STK, nobody knows if we're going to get or orders or not. The order comes up saying it's "in process", I've emailed asking if they had a tracking number and they can't give out one. They can at least be honest and say they got swamped with too many orders and they need to iron things out. But so far nobody has spoken up and that just gets people angry.
