Not sure if there's another thread about this somewhere, but I thought I would let people know there's a new Ridge Racer in the works. This has to be one of my favorite series of all time, but it looks like they are changing the game up this iteration to make it more like Burnout. Also it's being published by Bugbear Entertainment makers of Flatout so who knows if it will be any good.

Any info on why the original developers not working on it anymore?
1st thought was "jesus it looks like NFS Underground....where the fuck are the "Ridges".
Then she got in the Muscle car and when she hit the taxi i just burst out laughing.

looking at this thread title got me so excited, then looking at the video my heart broke instantly.
nice PS1 era CGI too, that shit is the future of animation I hear. Awesome they can fit it on game disks thanks to CD-rom technology.
Wow that's pretty awful looking. Ridge Racer = bright colors, beautiful places, techno music, not this urban shit. I guess the series just doesn't sell the way it used to. Wonder if they'll put the icing on the cake by making it free roaming.

Looks x-treme, as in an early 90s-esque revamp to make a once-prominent franchise "edgy" and give it more "attitude".

Ridge Racer is a brand, a longtime franchise that brings with it certain expectations.
You expect these sorts of uber-clean Tokyo-ish highways, brightly colored cars that vaguely represent Japanese sportscars in a much more fun way, excellent, sort of retro electronic music, and possibly some sort of rendered hottie in the intro.
That's it, really. Give us that amazing patented drifty gameplay, and we're golden.
Something like this is NOT going to stand out among the more polished efforts from EA and Criterion, and even worse, it will alienate longtime fans of the franchise, of which I am definitely one.
If they actually wanted to make money, they would craft a killer Ridge Racer Online, a game that would merge the classic RR vibe in terms of gameplay, cars and track designs, and music, along with good online code and record-keeping. Cheaper to develop, sold purely via XBLA or PSN, and you'd sell the game to a LOT of fans.
As such, because of Namco's lack of vision and their disconnect with what fans love about the series, we get turds like this. You'd have thought they would have learned their lesson with R: Racing Evolution.
Sad panda.
They should have just made another PSP Ridge Racer, that was the last good one anyway.

I remember when I saw the intro to Ridge Racer V.
Blew me away. Stylized. Sweeping camera angles. Infectious song thumping in the background. Visually engaging. Different. Sexy. Holy crap this is real time graphics on the PS2 (still impresses me to this day). Exciting. Unique. Fun.
This trailer just shat on all of that (hey that kinda rhymed). Though I shook my head in shame, I had a sneaking suspicion douchebags everywhere were yelling "AWWWWW YEEAAA BOYYYEEZZZZ" at the end of the video.

Don't crap on NFS Underground. Those games were the pinnacle of that series. But I have to agree I don't like seeing Ridge Racer changed, especially when the franchise is being outsourced to another developer.
Watched the trailer again. I really hope the woman isn't Reiko.

The story was okay and it was decent for running through at least once.

Namco has been disappointing lately. First they fuck up Ace Combat, now this.
Ridge Racer and Ace Combat are two of my most revered gaming franchises, so I'm not a happy camper right now. I'm going to go dig out my old copy of R4 and weep as I play. :crying:
To this day I still absolutely love R4. It is the pinnacle of the Ridge Racer series for me. The addition of the story elements to the classic RR gameplay made it absolutely perfect in my eyes and a game that they have yet to eclipse.
R5 lost some of the feel.
R6/7 brought back the RR feel and they were a blast to play but the addition of the "nitrous" system was a red flag.
Now this...abomination.
This......bastard child of Burnout/NFS etc wearing RR's clothes.
Fuck whatever this is.
Please quit trying to make everything gritty/hip/urban.

They keep showing the TV commercial for this here in Japan. The graphics look really bad. They look like DS graphics - I don't know why they are doing it.
I loved Ridge Racer. I went back and played 7 again recently. It's not that great unfortunately... R4 is still the best.
In all honesty that's the biggest thing I'm worried about. I myself would probably buy the game even with the change of direction if they A) had the same fantastic music as in 7 and B) the game was just as fun as Burnout. I'd be totally down for that.
