100$ this month. Its been consistently bad. Like way over what it'd be even if it was bad by old standards. They installed some meter regulating nonsense here to go over the ancient one they put in. Right now its getting pretty nutty.

For a house, this is very low.
guys, it's LA, the temp is 70 the whole year
paying a hundred bucks just to turn on the lights and tv would piss me off
maybe enron pt. 2?
Oh wah, my electric bill started with a 3 this month I don't wanna hear it :(
This month my bill was average (about 260 dollars), but last month we did get a freak bill of just over 400 bucks.
It sucked, but it won't be anywhere near as bad as paying for oil the next few months, so I can't really complain.
I live in an older 1960's brick house with a high ceiling living room, garage converted into a recreational room and Mississippi weather outside. In the summer it is $200-240 each month. Around spring and fall it is $120-140. In the winter it is $140-180. I try to keep the house around 70-72 degrees.
I really need to check out the insulation in the living room ceiling and put in a slider door in the rec room. The rec room is always warmer in the summer and colder in the winter compared to the rest of the house. At first I thought it was just older central air which I replaced last year, but it turns out it is just the house.
I was introduced to this site from here http://www.27bslash6.com/AGL.html
WTF are you guys powering, a flux capacitor!!! My bill doesn't reach $50 granted I'm not in a big mansion like the rest of you guys as I am renting but even my friends who are buying claim their never go over $130
If you're seeing a spike in your electricity bill, check your fridge. I'd imagine your water heater is gas powered, but if it isn't, check that as well. My June power bill was $160. Now, granted, it's usually $90-100, but there was no way I could justify a nearly double priced bill one month. Sure, hot summer out here in downtown LA, but what it turned out to be was my fridge, running out of freon, and cranking way too much. Got that fixed and my bills are back down to normal. Check your shit.
I think my local provider charges $100 just to think about sending me a bill. I've been nipping at $300/mo lately I think.
Mine went up to $220 last bill. But it was getting to be over 105+ degrees here every day all of July. Usually its around 150-190.
My bill jumped from $90 to $140 this month.:mad:
Awesome. Anyone who contests their electric bill using this diagram

is badass
I lol'd
Im running 130-150 in the summer, 250-300 in the winter. Electric everything, FTW! And once we all get to plug are cars in to charge before we drive, that'll only make things better... because the energy from power plants is pollution free... the more you know!
Mine's usually around $120 during the summer, and that's keeping the indoor temp around 77-80 degrees. It plummets to around $40 in the fall-spring, but then the gas bill goes up.
SSFIV is what's running up your bill...
LOL, that ranks up there with the exchange over the lost cat and that guy who tried to pay a bill in spider drawings.
[EDIT: it's actually the same guy! David Thorne

My mother is one of those people that goes over the top with Christmas and Halloween decorations.
I'm talking ass tons of lights, gigantic inflatables (one of Santa, Frosty, Mickey Mouse holding a snowglobe, Death [this one is over 12 feet tall], etc), lawn decorations, you name it.
Needless to say, this habit combined with Denver winters really drives my father crazy as far as the electric bill goes.
Electricity bills will vary from town to town. What's $400 for somebody could be $100 in another town using similar power. A spike in your bill is either a bad read on the meter, or something serious going on with an appliance like nruva suggested.
The best post here is Nruva's. 400 though? Jesus Christ. I don't know if some of you dudes are really rich or just really dumb. That's inexcusable. Unless you are living in a drug cartel based establishment, I don't get it.
Last month mine was $278 which isn't bad for 6 people. It should drop soon since the heat is going down so no more fan usage during the day time is needed.
Before Summer started it was usually 90, but it hit between 120-140 every month since then, we didn't add any new electric devices, we got rid of a freezer and refrigerator and the electric company insists what the meter shows is the right amount, while our neighbors are blasting their A/C 24/7 and get a bill of $60. Shit makes no sense.
Think some members in this thread are growing blue cheese:buttrock:
while at work recently I saw a ground squirrel eating the cap of a orange mushroom with white dots on it. He seemed to like it alot.
I normally do $45-50, this month chimed in at $65 for no apparent reason.. :(
National Grid is trying to Jack up our rates.
Hopefully we can stop them...
The best are towns with municipal power. CHEAP.
My bill is anywhere from $80 in the spring/fall to $300 in the dead of winter (my bill is for gas + electric). Joys of owning a house.
Last summer mine hung around $200 or so due to central AC combined with our hot muggy summers.
This summer I'm just using 3 window units and it's staying around $75 a month. I also removed a 2nd fridge we had, replaced all the bulbs with energy savers and starting turning off power strips when nothing on them was in use.
Energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs are fantastic for savings. :) We started with the 13w (60w equiv) and my wife complained they were too soft and dim (I was fine with them). So I overcorrected to 28w (100w equiv) and they are the harshest f'n things ever. It's like there's a radioactive supernova peeking out from behind every waiting doorway. I hope the 75w equivs are a happy medium.
I'd love to go at least partially solar, but to pull it off you need a roof that points south for maximum efficiency (which makes a huge difference on the # of years you need to break even on the install cost). Mine unfortunately does not.
I have all electric. Lights-heat-hot water.
In some ways, it isn't so bad because the gas runs some 20-30 a month just in service fees. So that's some 200KW or so.
Usually, my strategy in the winter is to set the heat in the mid 50's. Hopefully, i can absorb enough heat from the neighbors to keep it from kicking on.

Just got my bill today $440 fucking shits man!
Graph shows comparison from 2009 to 2010, you'll notice the dip in april/march is when we set a lower fixed rate compared to last year, usage is similar pattern but with lower rate, bill is less every month since.......EXCEPT this last month.
I keep track of this shit, i just didn't pull this out of my ass. Something is screwed up here.
EDIT(**(*(
Just went to the backyard to read meter.
82552 is what I read (if I read the instructions correctly on reading a meter)
- rule is that if the number is between numbers you go to the lower number.
If this is the case then they are trying to take my daughters xmas!
Bill shows last meter reading at: 82956

Anyone that knows how to read these things, tell me what you see. If I call someone to come check this shit, I don't want to pay 40bucks if I'm wrong.
You guys are crazy...
I own a recently remodeled (interior done in 2002, siding and high-efficiency windows added in 2005) 1500 sq/ft 1940's home ...the gas furnace is from 1996, the air conditioner from 2002. Keeping it cold as shit in here in the winter (stat on 67 day/68 night)...I'm normally looking at $280/mo in the winter (elec/gas combined)...summer drops to around $175 (stat on 70 most of the time...68 is if gets hot as fuck outside)...
That's the best I can do...I'd punch a midget for a $100 bill...
68 degrees for the AC ?
That's a meat locker. When I had a working central AC I normally kept it on 76-78.
I remember when my house did get the upgraded windows (insulated gas between the panes) and those made a massive difference.
I think they mean heater.
