Sold my Jaguar and games to get a PSX. Bought Assault Rigs, Raiden Project and Panzer General. The CD laser motor went out within 2 days, man I was fucking pissed off.
I got my Playstation along with Robotron in 98 for my birthday. I was stuck with awe with the graphics and amazed that I finally owned one. Played the hell out of that game.
Has it really been 15 years since the original Battle Arena Toshinden stole our hearts? Seems like only yesterday.
PSX > DC
i only got mine because final fantasy 7 didn't work with one of the earlier versions of bleem.
i ended up playing the psx a lot more than the n64 that i used to prefer.
Bought my original one with Mortal Kombat 3, The Raiden Project (still have that today) and the game I thought was so fantastic graphic-wise, it put everything to shame at the time...Battle Arena Toshinden. Course now it looks and plays so very dated but at its release, it was awe-inspiring. Still have my PS1, both American and Japanese along with the infamous Game Shark add-on :p
I can't remember the year I got mine, I think it was '96. I remember getting the console, Crash Bandicoot, Doom and Street Fighter Alpha (which had the worst box art I have ever seen). I decided the PS1 was the way to go after reading a 4-6 page spread in Gamefan about FFVII. Never regretted it, I had some fun times with that system. Then the PS2 came out and was somehow even better.
ohhh man I played the demo of assult rigs so many times(broke kid with a brand new PSX and no money to get a game), never did get to try the real version. Thanks for the reminder I havta go find that game now.
The PS1 was the system that broke me free from Nintnedo. I waited patiently for the N64, bought it at launch, kept it one week and returned it for a PS1. I never looked back. For its time, the PS1 was the best...it really took gaming to the next level. Games like Metal Gear, Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy VII were EPIC...
I don't get all of the Dreamcast hype figuring it was an arcade port saturated, short lived fail-boat machine at best...but respect for the PS1 is well placed.
A used PS1 was the first thing I ever bought with my own paycheck...$80 for the system/cords, two controllers and a GH copy of Tekken. One of the best gaming decisions I ever made. The little guy is sitting two feet to my right as we speak. Tons of great memories.
I'm still kicking myself for not getting one of those PSOne system/screen bundles when they were clearancing them out.
Wow....15 years already. My brother and I traded in our SNES and about 30 games for it to the local Diehard Gamefan store (when they still existed) and got one soon after it came out. We couldn't believe how good the graphics and music were for the games and the fact that it had near-perfect arcade ports. PSX was one of the best systems ever, and I have many fond memories of playing it.
I got a refurbished one for my birthday one year. It was just after Final Fantasy 7 went on greatest hits.
Dateline December, 1994:
I had been planning to get a Saturn. I'd been eying it since it had hit a few weeks earlier, checking out the games. I went to the import store to buy a Saturn. I had the money and everything. They had got in their first Playstations. I spent most of the afternoon playing both PSX and Saturn in the store, comparing games, graphics, upcoming release line-up.
Went home with a Playstation.
What's weird is that it was almost a repeat of the Genesis generation for me in that way. Had been planing to buy Genesis. Kept renting the system, trying different games. Then SNES came out. Tried SNES once and instantly abandoned all plans to buy Genesis.
Holy shit the PSX is 15!?!? I still remember playing playing To Shin Den and Ridge Racer for the first time and being blown away by their 3D glory.
I'm going to have to fire up some Ridge Racer and celebrate.
I remember a friend of mine got one with a few games for Christmas in '95. We played the crap out of Ridge Racer(still one of my personal favorite PS games) and Twisted Metal. Ah, good times.
Although I did have a PS1 early in the console's life I gotta admit that I was firmly on the side of the Saturn. Still, that first Christmas where I got the system was one of the best ever. I had been stuck in 16 bit hell for years, and friends had moved up to the new generation of systems. Then I finally had the system, Street Fighter Alpha, Wing Commander 3, and Cyber Sled. I played the hell out of those and the KOF 95 demo that came with the system.
I remember I got one in 1997 with Oddworld and Twisted Metal.
I grew up as a Nintendo kid. I remember my friend up the street got the PS1 and I went with the N64. As time went on I wanted one more and more.
I took a break from games for about 3 years after I was done with the N64, and one day I got the urge to buy a Playstation 1. I remember getting the model with the LCD screen attachment. It came with Pocket Fighter, and I had bought XvSF prior to it. Man I remember having fun times sitting on the computer with the PSOne on the desk too browsing the web and playing games. It was fun.
Wow, 2 big console gaming birthdays with a day of each other :)
I got one the day it was released.
My parents said they'd pay for half if paid for the other.
Worked my ass off to get that thing.
Remember getting Battle Arena Toshinden and loving the hell out of that game.
I had that same system for ages.
And I'm pretty sure I still have the system and Toshinden in the back of my closet somewhere.
Worked fine minus the blue line during CG scenes and being flipped upside-down.
I was a big RPG guy then so that thing was a dream machine.
Definitely the PS1 and DC are my two most nostalgically favorite systems.
I didn't get a PS1 in that time, I got a Nintendo 64. I didn't get a PS1 until 2000. Since I got it, I never looked back at my N64. I hated how my friends had a PS1 and they had the opportunity to play the awesome RPGs and fighters while N64 owners were kinda left in the dust in those generes. Don't get me wrong, I love the N64 but at the same time, I was ready for something different.
I remember the console for having the worst ports of fighting games, especially 2d fighters.
Have you heard of something called a Nintendo64?
Playstation at least HAD ports of fighting games. And the ports of 3D fighting games were excellent. The Tekkens and Soul Edge were mind-blowing for the time. And Rival Schools was great. Of the 2D games, the Capcom ports ranged between decent to very good. And I think PSX was the only console to get a port of Power Instinct 2 at all.
The only place the 2D fighting game ports on PSX really fell down was with the SNK games.
I had alot of fun with PSX. I didn't have a computer at the time and it seemed to open up a genre for me that I wasn't able to play, in strategy games. Panzer General was actually one huge reason I bought the console. I'm not a big fan of the whole playstation brand now, but I will give big props to the PSX for truly being an innovative, industry changing console.
The later capcom ports were pretty awful too, at least coming from the perspective of someone who had the saturn versions. A lot of that can be tied to the memory carts for Saturn, but the Playstation ports of anything from marvel super heroes on were terrible in comparison with msh vs. sf and alpha 3 standing out the most.
I miss the days when EB/Software Etc... actually stocked saturn imports with the memory carts/boot cartridges. They were actually great companies to work for at the time. It's gone really downhill since then.
The Playstation definitely had it's own selection of amazing of fighters among other games. Tekken 3 was the first 3d fighter I really got in to, Rival Schools was awesome, and Bushido Blade 1 was conceptually a blast until my friends and I figured out how to cheese the hell out of it.
I bought a used playstation in '97 to play FF7, and wound up being really impressed by the quality of some of the titles that came out for it.
The PSX, Good times. I remember the first game I played for it was Battle Arena Toshinden. Fell in love with Ridge Racer and Resident Evil.
Aww, I got my PSX a few years late in the game. I got it with Bushido Blade which I adored. I was too poor to afford a memory card though, and I think I left it on for a week before I managed to scrounge up the money, lol.
While PSX ports of SNK fighting games were not as good as the Saturn ports, several of them were still decent or good. I have many fond memories playing the ports of KoF 95, 96 (despite the awful loading times on that), and 97.
And Tekken 1, 2, and 3 were amazing ports and games. My brother and I spent countless hours playing each other on them.
I got my first PSX a couple months ago.. cool piece of equipment. I was more into computer games back in the day and never cared to own one when it first came out.
i got my ps1 around the time when the dual shock came out.
got it with the demo disc and parasite eve.
i already had an n64 and saturn though. i dunno, ps1 never did a whole lot for me outside of ff7 and mgs. i do have some nostalgia regarding the earlier games like jet moto and 2 xtreme. twisted metal 1 and 2 were great as well.
I got my Playstation around 95 as well. My mom paid I think like $300. One of the memories I remember most are when getting Resident Evil. My dream game...oh man...the excitement of that. I remember having McDonalds while watch my friend start up the game. Watched the first scene when the zombie turned his head and looked back at me. I was like.....holy fuck....run....lol
Good Times! Good Memories!
I think I got mine xmas 95 with a copy of Viewpoint. I am shocked that my psx still works.
i was seven years old
I picked one up my first Playstation in 96' after seeing the box art for Twisted Metal. I was enamored with the Playstation from day one. From 96' to 99' it was my favorite console because it had the games that I wanted to play. From Castlevania: SotN and Chrono Cross to Final Fantasy VII and Legacy of Kain, the Playstation was the source for several awesome gaming memories.
This console came out a week and a half before my 14th birthday, but I still couldn't manage to convince my parents to get me one. I did, however, get to rent it from the local video store a few times with Darkstalkers and Street Fighter Alpha. You have to understand that I used to play Capcom and SNK fighters on the SNES religiously, and constantly pause to find missing frames from the originals, as well as try and decipher different voices reused for other characters (which happened a lot with SNK fighters). Home ports before that were so off-point that it was almost a project in itself to see all the differences I could find. When I first rented the PS1 with SFA and DS, my world was flipped on its head. That was technology I wasn't used to being able to get inside my home, and it was games that I drooled over the demo screens when I had no quarters but wanted to walk to the arcade just to see them in action.
I was so fucking impressed, and I remember taking in the crystal clear voices, hit sounds, cd-based music, and rich, vibrant colors. I remember looking at the tv and saying "fuck, this is all happening on my tv!" I no longer had to go to the arcade to just watch a demo, nor was I relegated to staring at Gamefan screenshots for hours, imagining what it looked like in action. This was a far cry from the expectations the SNES gave me when it came to ports.
However, I happened to be the one that rented one of the ill-fated launch systems that were plagued with overheating problems. You can't imagine how frustrated I was looking forward to spending my weekend with this system that was delivering the previously-impossible dream of playing near perfect arcade ports in my house, only for it to just not start come midnight. I remember being devastated - I wanted to play those games so bad.
I was bummed I couldn't get the system, but I still had my SNES. I remember helping my brother in law roof some houses, and he said he'd give me $50, or we could hit up game stores in Dallas and I could get a SNES game. I was fucking DYING to play Street Fighter Alpha 2, so we searched all over town and we couldn't locate a copy anywhere. I told him we could look for it some other time, because I knew getting a $70 game that I really wanted to play was a better deal than $50 cash.
I sort of just forgot about it, until a year later my brother in law came to visit with my sister, and asked me if I thought I could beat him in Street Fighter Alpha 2, in which I replied of course. He handed me a bag that had a Playstation, SFA2, and Tekken 2, and then shit proceeded to tumble out of my ass. I wasn't big on 3d fighters, but I always thought Tekken 2 was pretty cool. I asked him why he got that, and he said that he loved the game and wanted to have something to play when he came to visit, because he hates Street Fighter.
I put in so many fucking hours on that system. That was one of the few awesome memories I have that I'll never forget. I remember grabbing the last King of Fighters 95 at Toys r Us when it was clearanced for $20 shortly after I got my system. I didn't care that I had to stare at load screens. It was a small price to pay for the quality I was getting then.
The Playstation was a fucking awesome system, and I remember feeling bad for my neighbor who had a Nintendo 64, because he would always try to trade systems and games for the weekend.
I only fell for that shit once, btw.
Did anyone else have to do the "turn the PS1 upside down" trick with an early console? I remember the first time I had to actually, I was playing FFVII. I had just got to the Diamond Weapon (I think thats what it was called at least) and within the first few turns I got Caet Sith's Slot Limit Break that kills the enemy instantly. I thought this was the most awesome thing that had ever happened to anyone, but then the fucking game froze up in the cutscene that followed. So I reset and tried again and actually got the limit break to work a second time. But after that, yet another frozen cut scene. Finally I remembered reading about turning the PS1 upside down so I tried it but I don't think I got the limit break a third time. I had to fight it normally. The cut scene played out normally though, so I didn't care.
I understand turning it upside down will stop working eventually too, but I ended up selling that system and got one of the new models that came with a Duel Shock to replace it. Still have that one to this day, box and everything.
Yeah, that was really common, it was a laser alignment issue being aggravated by the heat off the processor if I remember correctly. All my friends and I wound up having our systems on the side or upside down after a couple years. There were all sorts of shitty nyko and matcatz cooling fans for the system they tried to get us to push at EB. It was only an issue with the 100x systems, and most people that had a ps1 were on 500x systems. (I think the model numbers are right, fuck me if I can actually remember though)
At last count, I still had more games for PS1 than any other system. Great little system.
And I suspect there won't be a thread like this for the piece of shit that was the N64. :lolz:
I bought mine back in the Summer of '96, with SFA1 as my first purchase. My friends and I had never played it in the arcades, so it was like a whole new experience. I'll never forget when one of them was playing as Sodom and (probably inadvertantly) pulled off his level 3 720 super; the one where there's a long, slow, dramatic pause as he's in midair, right before finishing that jumping powerbomb of his. We were all amazed. Even though Alpha 1 was a mediocre (to be generous) title overall, and the loading times were obnoxious for a game that wasn't very big on characters or backgrounds, we had a blast. I still remember putting the game in my CD player and rocking out to Charlie's theme (remixed version was pretty sweet with its saxophone solo).
Then I bought Darkstalkers and HOLY CRAP, that's when it all hit the fan. What a work of art that game remains to this day...The graphics, the colors, the animation, the soundtrack...all were (and still are) phenomenal. It's the one longbox game I still have (I dumped SFA1 like a bad habit when Alpha 2 came out). As happy as I was to have it, I was still pissed that Saturn owners had Night Warriors, with both games reaching their respective consoles at the exact same time frame (seriously, there were ads for both in one magazine of EGM). I even wrote a letter asking Capcom about when Night Warriors was going to come out for the PSX and received a hand-written SFA postcard (!) informing me there was no news about one at the time, and thanking me for the letter.
Mine had a tendency to spin the games so fast it sounded like a car revving its engine, and you'd have to stand it up vertically on its side (like the stands used for PS2s and 360s) to get the thing to work properly. I remember GameStop had a deal where they'd take $100 or so off the purchase of a new PS2 if you gave them your old PS1 and 10 games, so I traded the system (which was really on its last legs performance-wise) and a bunch of stuff the normally wouldn't give me more than $3 apiece for and walked away with my PS2. I even have both of my old-school pre-Dual Shock controllers, which I accidentally left at home that day. I put 'em into my PS2 every now and then for kicks.
I still haven't seriously got down to beat Alundra, and am currently having a blast with Um Jammer Lammy, which I bought new for $3 last month. Great system, even though I HATED Sony's anti-sprite policies. SaGa Frontier II and SOTN were made all the sweeter because of them.
My gen 1 PS1 (with the full outs...including composite video and stereo RCA) still works to this day...and I've never had to turn it upside down...I'm shocked.
Fuck the N64...that fail machine ruined my love for Nintendo and started their downfall into a distant 2nd or 3d place company in the console wars.
I bought that pile of shit the day it came out (or actually a few days before, thanks for breaking street date K-Mart), at the time my buddy had a PS1. I took it to his house and hooked it up...bought Mario 64 as well. I choked down that blurry, empty landscape, elevator music havin' pile of dogshit as well as that terrible fucking controller for one week before admitting defeat and returning the pile of garbage...I bought a PS1 and never looked back...
That cum-dumpster of a console gets plenty of love from blind-idiot big-N fanboys and kids too young to remember a proper ass kicking Nintendo console but I refuse to be nice to it. The cart based format was shit...most of the games were shit...the fucking controller is only second to the Jaguar's controller for worst ever made...in other words...epic FAIL.
That console has an ocean of crap titles with a few (and I mean FEW) scattered gems amongst the shit (it makes my dookie sparkle). Pathetic figuring the misplaced love it gets to this day.
All-in-all, if you were born before 1985, you should know better than to bow down before that pile of crap...
*phew*...I feel better now...
...had to let out some steam...
I guess I am just a jaded Nintendo fanboy...It was my own fault but I patiently waited, and defended the Ultra 64...then the N64...I sat by as my buddies bought the PS1 or Saturn...I told them how epic it was going to be...
Long before the release of the N64 I sat i amazement when my buddy played Ridge Racer and Wipeout on his new PS1...I remember thinking to myself "this is the future of gaming." but I didn't listen to myself.
No, I patiently waited for the N64 to come and kick everyone's ass like the other Nintendo consoles had done.
Then my patience blew up in my face...as I sat playing that pile of shit Mario 64 while uncomfortably cramming my hands together on that pitchfork controller my friends sat there, mocking my purchase...in that moment I cracked...that feeling of amazement I had when first playing Mario on the NES, then Mario World on the SNES was simply not there.
That system symbolized the end for Nintendo in my mind. Since that pile of crap, they have never been considered a serious gaming system maker. There have been a few great games scattered here and there but for the most part...since fall 1996...Nintendo has been a shadow of what it was from 1986-1996. Their arrogance in making it a cart based system was only the tip if the iceberg. Almost every large franchise moved to the PS1...it was sad. Outside of their in-house games, their systems have been failures ever since (even the Wii...).
I guess I look at it on a much larger scale. The N64 was the start of a bad time in gaming...
