Maybe I'm missing it... but I can't seem to find an official Civ5 thread here. We're two weeks out from the official release date of Sept. 21st. I'm getting psyched, playing some Civ 4 and Civ Rev in preparation. Time for the official countdown.

I'm a little afraid it is going to consume me for a while. I get sucked into Civ 4 pretty hardcore. One of the only games I can still get lost in and realize the sun is coming up and I have work to worry about in a few hours.Quote:

City warfare has been revamped. Cities have hitpoints that, if taken down to zero, will signal the city's defeat to invading forces. Hitpoints can be increased by merging units with the city. Captured cities can be annexed, razed, or transformed into puppet states, each option having distinct advantages; for example, puppet states will provide resources and have lower unhappiness.
The new addition of independent city states also holds a lot of potential.
Never got into the God Game genre.
I can see why some people (especially Bobak) can get into it though.

edit: @Abasuto - Did you like Populous (the latest versions in particular)? I thought it had the best parts of Black & White and lacked the whole tomagotchi style pet raising thing which I found to be exhausting. Populous 3 had some gnarly multiplayer, mad plagues, deep strategy.
This is a bad month for video games for me.
Halo Reach is going to destroy all of my multiplayer gaming time.
Civilization V is going to eat away all my single player time.
I can't believe these two games are coming out within a week of each other.
I'll be there when Civ 5 drops. I've been looking forward to this for awhile.

what genre does a game like civ fall on?ive never played any of these games,but i am aware of them.
what are they about?

Usually way harder. On Civ 4, I wasn't able to beat the CPU above Monarch level without going for cultural victory, which I think was the easiest for that game. I don't see how someone would achieve a Conquest victory in 4 with the difficulty cranked up. There are so many penalties that it can take the whole game just to conquer 1 of the 6 opponents, unless you are doing something wacky like save/restore to win every fight. ...and even if you don't have that issue, there are plenty of others on Steam forums. My impression is that this game is not ready for primetime, though it works for some. Civ 4 was a far more polished product on the day of release.

first civ game i've ever played. its great. i just hate how workers build roads. theyre never straight and usually take up more tiles than they need to.
if youre having technical issues make sure your drivers are up to date.

one game i micromanaged all my workers. i built roads tile by tile.
the next game i set all my workers to auto build improvements. they didnt seem to build roads like that or at least at low priority.
so for a few roads i clicked the route to button where a worker will build a road from where it currently is to wherever you click. doing that they end up building on an extra tile here and there. my roads had a ton of loops in em.

as for hardware requirements. it runs unplayably slow even on lowest settings on my work pc (p4 3.2ghz, 1gb ram, geforce 7900 gto, windows xp) and runs perfect max settings on my pc (phenom 2x6, 4gb ram, geforce gtx 470, win 7.)
i'll try it out on my laptop later (core 2 duo 2.2ghz, 3gb ram, geforce 8600gt m, win 7) and report back.
I'd buy this in a heartbeat, but I'm pretty sure my iMac won't be able to handle it (well, that and I bet the Mac version isn't out yet anyway, no?).
I only got 2 GB of RAM, a 2.66 dual processor, and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400 with a puny 256 MB of VRAM.
Hell. I don't think I could handle anything new. Stupid Macs. :)

I'm gonna go ahead and attribute the lack of replies to this thread to the amount of time it's participants are investing in this great game. Radically different to Civ IV.. I could definitely see people playing both. Civ IV isn't exactly a manic game at 4 hours a round but this one is just so much longer and more complex that it seems like it in comparison.. My first game is coming up on at least 7 or 8 hours now at 2004. Definitely loving it though. GOTY 2010 as far as anything I've played goes lol

Game plays fine for me at the lowest settings. Looks pretty too. I definitely think you can run it, but if there is any doubt, there is a demo available in Steam you can try first.
Not for Mac there isn't — at least not yet. Which is all fine and well since there's no Mac version of the game yet anyway. I, uh, probably should have thought of that before... It'll be a year or two before it comes out, I bet. Who knows, maybe I'll have a new computer by then (though I doubt it).
How about using, you know, Boot Camp to throw windows on a small partition.

Haven't really gotten into a game like this since Alpha Centauri.
Gandhi and Montezuma have long been the evil masterminds in Civilization. Montezuma is blood thirsty, but Gandhi in Revolution would nuke your cities out of spite... I'm pretty sure they intentionally coded him to be the most ruthless of all CPU controlled characters.

Those recommended specs are pretty beasty. I guess being 5 years out of the loop on PC gaming and your rig looks like a calculator compared to what is being used now.
Civ 4 should still provide a fun experience right? I'm interested in getting started in civilization again. I played 2 when i was younger and would get rocked. I still found the game fun. I'm thinking of giving it a go.
Civ 4 is pretty much impossible to go wrong with, it's definitely more of a complete/less buggy game than 5.. good as it is it definitely needs patching/updating.
Civ4 is a great game. It's definitely the stronger of the two right now due to all the updates, add-ons, and time it has had to mature. I love 5. There are definitely bugs that need to be addressed, but it is a wonderful update over 4. That being said, 4 is still one of the best games I've played in years. You'd be doing pretty good starting with it instead of the latest iteration.
will civ IV work on windows 7 64 bit? cause i haven't played a civ game since 2 and that wouldn't run on my current computer i'd bet. but i figured i could give IV a go before going into V just to get my sense of the game back. just wondering if it'd work for me or not.
