Edit: that whole time I was staring, but not focusing, at the white in the middle. What I needed was deep focus.

I was referring to the layout of the characters which refers to the character select screen specifically. If they were in a different order then it wouldn't.

I was that way too (military rank or some Atari 2600 game), then I scrolled down, saw an SF2 comment and immediately caught who each set of colors represented.
