Sonic 2
sonic 3 and nuckles
Haha, I was making this thread and got a phone call. . . must have hit the "submit" button. No poll - I'm a dope.
I think it's Sonic the Hedgehog.....................the real power of Genesis!
I played the hell out of 2 and 3 back in the day on my roommate's Genesis. He had 1 as well, but 2 and 3 got all the play.
I recall liking 2 best, but to be honest I don't remember why.
Wasn't there a rumor that Michael Jackson had done or was going to do some of the music for 2?
2 is tops. It went downhill after that.

2 was the only really good Sonic game.Although i liked adventure battle II for gc
The first one. The level editor was really fun as well. I wish they had that in an 8-bit Mario game.
The first one. Some of the best Genesis music ever (Spring Yard Zone, anyone?) and a true step forward for the gaming experience on the platform. 2/3/Knuckles were good too, but not revolutionary.
I liked the first one. Fucking magical. It's possible one sequel or other did some aspect better, but I never enjoyed any Sonic game the way I did the first one. It was the right game in the right place at the right time. By the time 2 rolled around the following year, I was a lot less interested in that type of game. Just timing.
I have to go with Sonic and Knucles, interesting and I love having an actual difference when selecting the characters. I don't recall a lot of diference in Sonic 2 when selecting Tails, and in Sonic 3, Tails still isn't that interesting, Knuckles is a very cool character in my opinion =) and the whole "I'm not the good guy" thing is always cool XD.
I also played Sonic 3D blast, a good game and Sonic Pinball... first I hated it and after it was "OK".

Yeah, the original and Sonic 2 are tied in my mind. The original Sonic was the first 16-bit game I ever played and it really blew my mind when I was 10 years old or whatever. I love the soundtrack for the original too.
I never really played Sonic 3 though. Or any game after Sonic 2 now that I think about it.
Sonic and Sonic 2.
Sonic 3 was quite nice too but I didn't even play it half as much as the prequels.
God, I must have put 23498978234 hours in the first Sonic, it came as a real revelation for me after all the slow-mo j-n-r's.
I enjoyed the first one the most, even though they made a lot of improvements to the sequels.

Sonic 2 for me, I liked the level designs and music best.. and it was really awesome having 2P Co-op play with Tails as well.
The first Sonic will always be my favourite, closely followed by 2.
I thought 3 was awesome as hell. 2 is second best. Then 1, then... who cares.
Sonic 2. Maybe because it's the only one I played as a kid.
I never understood Sonic 2's popularity. A lot of people really seem to single it out as something special, but even when I played in circa 1992, I found the level design to be even more unvaried than Sonic 1.
Sonic 1, even though it had six levels, a lack of a spindash and half of the memory, seemed to mix it up more with it's level design.
Sonic 2 just felt like it swapped the wallpaper on each level.
I just read an interview with Yuji Naka on 1up.com and he claims Sonic 2 was heavily focus tested for maximum mediocrity, so this explains a lot.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is cool, but overkill.
Sonic 1 is the best game. Even though it, too, was designed by committee, right down to the colour of sonic's shoe, it was simply the most fun of them all. No shitty friends, no excess. Just pure fun,
3 and knuckles is probably my favorite. that ends up being one long ass game and its a decent challenge trying to get all the chaos emeralds in one play through.
surprised no ones tried to mention sonic cd. its like everything that makes sonic 1 good and more.
Honestly, I tend to enjoy about all of them about the same, though I do think I've played Sonic 2 more than the others and it definitely has the most nostalgic value for me.
A lot of people seem to dislike Sonic 3, but I liked the direction it took with the more varied, maze-like stages, lots of mid bosses, and the soundtrack was killer.
I don't think I could ever get tired Genesis Sonic titles.
I like Sonic 2 the best. I feel it's the most fun to play over and over again.
Sonic 3 Michael Jackson essential reading:

The conspiracy runs deep.
To this day I have still never beaten 1. Always, ALWAYS die on the water zone.
Great game, though.
1. totally 1.
Counting the add-ons:
1. Sonic CD
2. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
3. Sonic the Hedgehog
4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
5. Sonic and Knuckles
6. Knuckles' Chaotix
7. Sonic Spinball
8. Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
9. Sonic 3D Blast (much, much better on Saturn with 3D controller)
Sonic is probably my third favorite series of all time, right behind The Legend of Zelda and Virtua Fighter.
Sonic 4, Sonic Colors Wii, and Sonic Colors DS are all looking pretty fucking awesome so far.
Sonic 3 w/Knuckles for the complete experience as I like how the story picks up from the Death Egg crashing into the volcano from Launch Base Zone.
Sonic CD is ever so slightly shitty.
Maybe it was too avant garde for me, but I always felt it was a gimmicky game that falls apart after the third level.
It feels like one of those Sonic 1 rom hacks you can get on the net with a nice CD soundtrack(JPN) and some cool cinemas.
Sonic 1 by far, loved Marble Zone the best for some reason. allthough the music is well annoying.

Ironically that may be partly the reason. I start to get bored with Sonic 3 + Knuckles after the Casino-like stage, but you get into the thick of Sonic 2 quick because the first stages are so easy to breeze through. I'm sure nostalgia and familiarity play big roles too. Sonic 2 was packaged with my genesis and was pretty much the only game I played for a long while. Did they ever package sonic 3 with the genesis?
2 had a great challenge, wasn't overly long, and Tails was fine in this game as your lackey. 1 hasn't aged well IMO, and 3 just goes on forever.
1. It was my introduction to 16-bit gaming.
First Sonic is hands down my favorite. I used to be able to one life this game with all the emeralds no problem.
I really like Sonic 2, but it's too glitchy. Nothing like flying through a level at break neck speeds and then just fly through a solid wall or the floor for no apparent raisin. Also it seems some things will "squish death" you even when your just beside them sometimes. Still fun though.
Sonic 3 / Knuckles...... just didn't do it for me. Loved me some CD back in the day.
Fuck I miss the days of good Sonic games.
Edit: another thing I disliked about 2 was having to turn tails off. I hated how he would hit a boss and sonic would end up passing through it or getting hit. I HAVE to turn tails off to play it. He's a fuck.
i dont really like aquatic ruin or oil ocean, and hill top is mediocre.
even though casino night and metropolis are awesome whenever i think of 2 i think of the stages i dont like.
everywhere people typically say they like sonic cd the best. this is one of the first threads with posts actively against it. who knows. 1, 2, 3, k, and cd are all good.
They all suck :)
Sonic hasn't had a great game since 2.
I'm the oddball here, I guess. My favorites are Sonic And Knuckles + Sonic 3 and Knuckles Chaotix. Knuckles had some bad character design, but some fantastic level design.
Actually, I take back what I said. I loved playing Sonic Spinball, and still do at times.
I enjoy 2 & 3. I won't try and say either are amazing or hold up nowadays but at the time of release they were at least impressive. I also enjoy the NGPC one also.
Plus one time a friend and I ate a bunch of acid and played the casino zone in 2 for like 4 hours straight.
The STs are pretty swank as well.
