When will the PS3 be declared a failure?

Seriously, cause it's numbers are getting pathetic.

On the hardware side, it gets killed every week by the 360, wii and even the PS2 and PSP...

On the software side, it's extremely pathetic. The best selling PS3 title in the world hasn't even broken a million copies (Resistence), and multi platform titles are pathetic, Madden 08 sold more copies on the PS2 than the PS3. EA Sports for example is equally dissapointed, it's Xbox 360 titles outsold every other multi platform title they had on the PS3 and Wii combined.

About the only thing PS3 owners have are bluray movies, and that format will be dead when Warner drops bluray before 1st quarter 2008.

Proof can be found by the firesale of PS3 40 gig systems with like 17 free movies.

Any opinions on this?

I know some will say the PS2 had crappy sales before any good games came out, but it was never THIS bad. This monstrosity of a system isn't even selling in Japan...

I don't think it is a failure. It blows my mind that people never mention that the xbox360 has been out longer. I think it needs more time :D

Is the PS3 gonna sell 8 million systems in one year to catch up to where the 360 is now?

Not a chance considering it sells barely 100k a month.

And the PS3 has nothing even close to Halo/Gears of War to move systems.

Their biggest game, metal gear solid 4, isn't even a mainstream series anymore, it's popularity peaked on the PS2.

It's like someone thinking Dead or Alive 5 is gonna move more 360s, it really won't.

The 360 and Wii stopped sucking after a year.

I think their [Sony's] fate in the US is basically sealed at this point.

Such a shame too as it's really nice hardware but whenever I browse the selection of games at a store I really don't see anything out there that would make me want one.

I don't think it will out sale the 360,but I think it will have a nice set of games, and be better off.

I think we need to give the PS3 another year before we can start calling it an outright fiasco.

At the moment, it's somewhere between under-performing and failure. And failure as compared to the PS2, Wii, 360, DS, GBA, etc.

Well I don't really think it will be DEAD, the PS3 has been outselling the Wii in Japan for quite some time...and while I don't think it will ever eclipse the 360, I don't really think it has to.

The 360 had a full year head start, and with some interesting PS3 exclusives like MGS4, Uncharted, and all of the interesting hardware compatibility (PSP, the rumored Aibo PS), I think Sony's doing this for the long haul. Sony is nothing if not stubborn, there is no way they're simply going to stop supporting the PS3, hell they STILL make MiniDisc players.

The fact remains, something doesn't have to be #1 to be declared a success, and considering just how different the three systems this gen are, I think each of them will have their own niche carved out.

On the topic of BluRay, I think its still way too early to tell. When you bring up movie sales, and when people hype up the success of transformers on HDDVD and the looming sales of The Simpsons movie and Superbad on BluRay, they are talking about sales in the 100k's...by contrast Pirates of the Carribean sold 21 million copies of its DVD in the first WEEK. I'm not convinced they can throw in the towel just yet, and I'm really not convinced that either format is better for media.

What I think will happen is BluRay will be the industry standard for blank media, since it has the support of every major PC manufacturer with the exception of Toshiba and Acer, HDDVD might clinch the movie market, but that will be eclipsed by digital distribution I think. Just look at M$'s half assed HDDVD implementation compared with how awesome their XMP is, if they really gave a shit, they'd offer a model with HDDVD integrated.

I just think this whole war is silly, BluRay has higher capacity, that pretty much sums it up for me. I could really give a shit who wins, I just want the better media.

It would take over the lead if SNK would port the entire Neo-Geo catalog. :tickled:

Actually, looking at the official sales released by sony and microsoft every week. The PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide every since the price cut was introduced a few weeks ago. In the US, the PS3 is trailing behind the 360 by something like 20 thousand units a week or something, but they are raping it in Japan, Europe, and the rest of the world.

Also, the PS3 seems to have sold better in it's first year than the 360 did despite the outragous price difference. The game library for the PS3s first year definately lwas alot better than the 360 library. If I remember correctly, the only thing the 360 had going for it for it was Dead Rising in the first year. Sony managed to pump out at least 5-6 AAA titles. Ratcher, Uncharted, Resistance, Warhawk, and flow come to mind.

Now with the price difference not so great. And the fact that the PS3 comes is more feature packed that the 360, I think the PS3 will start taking the definite lead soon. Especially since 2008 PS3 releases look great, and xbox ones not so much.

The only 360 game im excited about in 2008 in Ninja Gaiden II. The PS3 owners have two new Final Fantasies, Metal Gear Solid, Unreal Tournament III, Killzone 2, and Haze to look forward to just to name a few. The rest that is remotely popular is going multiplatform.

Oh and about Blueray. I read everywhere that Blueray currently holds 70 percent of the market if not more. Has been outselling HD-DVD by 2-1 for a while now. Recent reports indicate that blueray is outselling HD-DVD by 3-1 now.

So in my opinion, either blueray wins or both formats lose. HD-DVD stands no chance now. blueray has a larger userbase with more studios supporting it.

It's 65/35 average for software, but only because sony practically gives away bluray discs every week with BOGOs, and then counts these free discs in their sales numbers.

In the stand alone market Toshiba has more marketshare than all the bluray stand alone manufactorers combined.

Since bluray was released, sony has barely sold 100k stand alones, while Toshiba has sold 500k stand alones (plus 250k xbox 360 players).

By the end of the year the instal base for HDDVD will be over 1 million (not counting PCs with HDDVD drives). All without forcing the format on people by integrating it in a gaming system.

The Bluray format is a sinking ship, and when the PS3 starts to die out, it will not have a leg to stand on.

You are probably right. I am not very knowledgable about this as I am not on the HD media bandwagon just yet. I only have a 360 with no HD-DVD attachment. I am not convinced there is a reason to go with either format just yet. I think I will wait it out.

I just mentioned things I heard around the internet and what not. From sites like Kotaku or gizmodo or whatever, which seem to be unreliable. However, I am definately sure about the PS3 numbers currently outselling xbox since those are taken right out of the official reports released by respective companies.

looking at this list.. God of War III, Star Ocean 4, FF games, Little Big Planet, Castlevania, Gradius, Disgaea, MGS4, Yakuza, Fatal Frame, UT3, and Shin Megami alone are enough to warrant an eventual PS3 purchase for me. There is definately alot more here to be excited about. I know for JRPG nuts like me, a PS3 is a given.

I think the PS3 is just picking up steam, and I am excited that I'm getting one for X-mas.

Gradius and Castlevania? Both these series have caused me to buy consoles before.
I'll probably think about a ps3 some time in '08. Total shite lineup right now, though.

I'm no PS3 fanboy, I have one and I like it, but there are areas where the 360 clearly outshines it.

That being said, and I'll repeat it again, BluRay has better manufacturer support and is the better storage medium. HDDVD has some really cool interactivity features, but I don't really care about those.

Could that change? Yeah. But considering Dell, HP, and Apple among many others are shunning HDDVD in their PCs, and since companies like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic have shown lukewarm interest in developing hardware for HDDVD so far...I'm skeptical.

I just want them to work together and bang something like this out already, I think it's so stupid that people feel the need to justify and defend their purchases. That's ridiculous.

The PS3 has no fucking games for it and that's frustrating, however, it has absolute gems like Uncharted that are worth the cost of admission alone IMO.

I think if the PS3 would get its act together for its on line ability then it would really be something impressive. I've a 360 and a friend with the PS3 and I really like both, but I'm not willing to invest into another game system. With all the stuff I can do on line for the 360 that keeps me more interested than a lot of the actual games I can go out and buy.
I've only a few games but a lot of live arcade content and shows and things. I also really like the new update to the software.

If the PS3 had as good of online set up as on 360 then I would think it really be impressive and take off in sales.

B, you're dead wrong about HP.

They are actually pro HDDVD, and offer drives in almost every model they sell.

I know quite a few people with HP laptops that have HDDVD drives.

HDDVDs PC support is pretty solid, Toshiba, Acer and HP all fully support the drives in their PCs. Also add in Intel and Microsoft, and that's a large force of companies in the computer market.

Toshiba has recently made them standard on every laptop they sell.

The 360 is the PS2 of this generation. So all multiplatform games are pretty much made for the 360, and then ported to the PS3/Wii.

Take a look any any EA game and you'll see, they usually have a worse framerate on the PS3.

Assassins Creed is another fine example, plays smoother on the 360.

It's kind of hard for the PS3 to be declared a failure since as a Blu-ray player it is pretty much the best one on the market. Then you have the upcoming releases of MGS4 and Final Fantasy XIII. Those two titles are going to push systems out the door.

Second, DashK attempting to pontificate on the subject of high definition media is really laughable. He has been proven to have no idea about anything on the subject in numerous threads in the Blu-ray/HD DVD forum on this message board.

He claims his opinions are "facts".

For example, he says the only reason Blu-ray even wins every week is because of BOGO. According to him this also means that this is desperation on the Blu-ray group's part. However, will follow that up by claiming the HD DVD player price drop/fire sale was a smart business decision on Toshiba's part.

There is no logic behind anything he types.

Also, the PS3 hate is idiotic. I hated on it, then I bought one and I realized it's nowhere near as bad as most of the broke ass people on this message board make it out to be.

Seriously, we sold out on launch day, got a second shipment, and haven't even sold through that yet. We've had the exact same fucking 60 gigs for almost a year now.

It's not like I'm in Rural Dumbfuckville, Minnesota either. We're one of the top performers in the top Target district, period, right next to the main U of M. We burn through a lot of stock, but the PS3 just festers.

wow, and all devs have been doing with that space is creating hi-def movies of in game cutscenes to save on loading times. see heavenly sword, and Uncharted as prime examples.

Fact: your 360 will break
Fact: PS3 is built like a tank
Fact: Japanese game developers do not like 360.
Fact: The wii is very underpowered

I don't think the PS3 will outsell the wii or the 360, but considering it a failure is too much
