The moment you knew you lost the collector bug

I know threads on variations of this show up from time to time, but now I wanna hear exactly when/what/where on when others of you went, damn, I really don't need this collection of random expensive shit any more, I think I'm gonna sell it.

Happened to me kind of slowly at first. I got a modded X-Box and slowly started to think hmm, I could get an easy $2000 out of selling my AES and MVS stuff, maybe more... So I sold it off. Then I sold off my FM Towns Marty stuff. Then I sold my copy of Tarumaru and just kind of stopped selling for a while.

Then I got married (yes, I know). Upon the realization that I hadn't actually played a Saturn game in at least 10 months, I bit the bullet and put all that stuff up, and it was long my very favorite system, so that's when I knew I didn't have the bug at all anymore.

After all that's gone I'll probably sell my copy of Border Down. Kind of funny how now I'm more like damn, I don't even wanna own any games that are worth that much unless I'm playing them ALL the damn time.

I'm just curious if other people have gotten out slow, fast, or both, and also how many of you relapsed later!

I haven't quite hit that point yet, but I assume it to be pretty inevitable. I really haven't played the Saturn for more than 10 hours since January 2006! I think I could see myself selling it all one day. As for SNES, it'll probably be 4, 5 years from now, but once I play through these titles like I did the Saturn 99-05... over time you just move on. That's the nature of the beast I guess. You can always balance gaming hobby with family and professional goals, but it'll never be the same like when you didn't have those priorities (i.e. a carefree kid).

I'll probably hang onto the classics, but yeah... one day the bug will fade for me too. Just the way it is... if you know you won't miss it, I advocate selling for sure.

I don't really know, to tell you the truth. Of course I was never a hardcore collector trying to build a collection. I did, still have every video game and console i'd ever bought though, and I proudly displayed them.

But then when day I just realized that why have all these games if I don't play them? So I sold them.

It was after I met this guy at Evil Mike's apartment. The kid who borrowed everyone's stuff, and his greatest accomplishment in life was being able to 1cc Magician Lord. He was an incredible dork. I then refused to associate with people like him. I could not allow myself to have people think I am anything like him. And now I stay here for the people that are hardly anything like him.

i moved all of my collection into about 40 some boxes in storage of
just everything i've amassed from the last 7 years.
i really don't ever want to get rid of all my stuff,
but i'm thinking it's going to be a problem finding the space for it,
because i sure don't have space in my apartment for it all now.

I've been collecting games my whole life, and I don't ever think I'll stop. If I did, I would hold onto my stuff and pass it on, or wait 50 years until it's worth oodles of money. That's what I'm doing with my Magic: The Gathering collection.

i buy shit like Zelda now.

i keep my systems, but sell the games. Part of the fun was collecting it all, and i know i can get it back at any time...

Well, I have always played computer and video games, but like Lagduf, I have never been a collector, so to speak. My initial impetus to join this site was to seek info on getting a neo home system and some games.

Long story short, I never was a collector of video games, but then again I have tons of records and then some :D

So I guess in a way I'm a collecor myself

not sure I ever was a real collector, but have been a 'hardcore' gaming enthusiast (on account that I'm pretty shit at video games in general - I wouldn't therefore call myself a hardcore gamesplayer) since I was about 7.

so maybe I can't talk about that but two things spring to mind - the time I realised how pathetic I was and the time I realised how pathetic videogames where (since they took up so much of my time). it was a ghastly but very clear discovery - and I soon tried to hide it from myself once more, but it's always been there, just under the surface - which is why I get a guilty feeling when indulging in videogaming, and it is why I'm such a jaded fuck. I get this strong sense that I'm wasting time when I'm playing. and I am, I know I am.

then I've had other mini realisations - such as - retro gaming is cool from a distance, as an idea, as a point of refference - but playing old games, retreading the past - is largely pointless. even though I am always amongst the first to denounce modern gaming, the truth is I am far more intrigued with what's cutting edge, than what was cutting edge. that goes for fashion and music too. I went through a long phase of being into retro this and retro that - it was utterly futile, though I can't say I've shaken it off completly.

I went to Japan, since then I've bought maybe two or three games. They're just too cheap over there to justify paying internet prices.

MAME, too. $300 for some piece of shit CPS-II board that will stop working someday (maybe soon)? I'll just download it, thanks.

I've always collected something throughout my life. Baseball cards, GI Joes, Laserdiscs, sneakers, etc etc. Most of that stuff is gone now, lost/traded/sold. Some of the things that I have collected in the past I have regretted losing... because of that I've decided to hold on to stuff I've collected from my more recent hobbies.

I used to be a major, major jap toy whore (vintage & current). Not anymore, but I still hold onto all the stuff in storage. Additionally, my interest in games is currently in a steady decline... however I'll probably hold on to all that stuff as well. As of right now, I'd like to think that I'd only sell if I fell into a situation where I really, really needed some cash.

Good topic. I have been thinking about selling my entire NGCD & AES collection and more than half of my MVS games. I have grown up with video games all my life, so I don't think I will quit collecting and playing even though I have a wife and a kid now. Part of the fun for me is the process of collecting.

Now back to your topic:
I sold off 90% of my JPN Sega Saturn collection couple of years ago. It was the time when my dad lectured me about my massive video game collection. He said, "it's just a piece of plastic! Sell it if you don't play it anymore." From that point, I come to realize that there is really no point of keeping a game that I don't play or I don't truly love.

Giving up a collection is hard and it takes courage. I am sure you will find other things in life that you value more (like your family) than video game. Good luck.

I have some games I won't sell though, a small collection if you will - super famicom games mainly but I'd like to add some megadrive one's too. cheap stuff mostly ofcourse - but I like the design of the boxes as much as these games themselves so that's why I can 'justify it' to myself.

Same thing happened to me J. Priorities have gotten the better of me, and now I weight my game-related purchases much more carefully.

I liquidated about 70% of my collection last year around this time, and I've never looked back. There's nothing wrong with collecting, it's just not my thing anymore.

For me it comes and goes.

I don't think I'll ever just up and sell everything one day, I've grown up with this stuff and have too many memories attached to them.

I do go through what I have and weed out what I don't want every few years though.

I definitely hit this phase a few years ago, I can sympathize with EW and Spike, some of the people that take this too seriously kind of frighten me. Games don't have the same magic anymore, the only systems I hung on to were my Saturn and PS2 for DVD playback, even the Saturn's probably soon for the chopping block, I haven't turned it on since I moved. I still love games, but I don't hang on to anything I don't actively play, and really haven't bought anything new in years now, the only time I get some play time in is if I'm hanging out at a friend's place.

Heh, I was the exact opposite. I always saved the games I bought, but I never started actually collecting until the summer after I graduated. I realized that I could actually afford video game stuff...I kind of wish I hadn't. :eek_2:

I think that after this summer I'm going to take a break from buying games...I only get about 2 hours of free time a day and I usually spend it searching for games to buy, which doesn't leave me with a lot of spare time to actually PLAY the games that I bought. I feel that I've got a decent stockpile now, plus there's the fact that I'm getting married next summer and I need to start saving my cash. But yeah, I don't think I'll ever stop collecting, and I'll never sell my stuff until it's worth at least 3 times what it was worth when I got it. It's not like the value of vintage games is going down...

Same here. I don't even have my Saturn hooked up at this point. I trimmed from 330 Saturn games to 180 last year. I used to love the SS hardcore, but as I said, you move on. How many times can you play, discuss or think about NiGHTS? Remember NG unrelated back in 2002? It wasn't uncommon to have Saturn topics pop up weekly. (I admit probably 60% of those were started by me, though, LOL). Those were the so-called "glory years." There is rarely gaming talk on unrelated these days, period. 5 years ago, you'd find topics on Saturn, NES, GEN, etc. Today things are different. People move on after a while. Simple as that.

Looking at the gallery pics, most of us are in shape. But when you go to conventions like Otakon, it's a whole different story.

Why can't it still be fun, I just pick up a cart every once in a while, play the shit out of them , but have a nice little shrine to neogeo, my favourite system too.

All of the members I've met from this site in real life seem like cool, normal people. If you ran into them in real life without knowing them, you would have a hard time telling they were hardcore gamers. This is what makes this site great and the only video game forum I ever need. Kind of like Wasabi said, I like playing games but don't want to be around people who nerd out about it.

Back in 2001, my wife had severe complications from surgery and needed to be on a wound vac that cost us $200 out of pocket per day for almost 4 months. I didn't think twice about ditching all my home carts. They were gone. It's times like that in your life you realize what really matters.

I've never been much of a game collector. I buy only games I know I'll play, and the stuff I haven't picked up is inevitably gonna get sold or trashed. Other things, like figures and artbooks, I collect like crazy. I guess there will be a time where I'll stop collecting, but as someone who began her collecting career as a child, I doubt it.

And while I can completely understand Wasabi's and Spike's points, I don't mind others who are far more hardcore than I am. I know I'm not like that and am happy at my medium.

Just as an afterthought, I've realized just how much I've mellowed out with my nerdiness in general. It won't ever go away and I'm content with that, but I'm not nearly as rabid as I used to be.

I don't know if I'ver ever really had the "bug". I've never made an effort to amass a complete library for any game system I've had over the years.

Stopped buying homecarts long ago after I got a 2slot with supergun. I'll go a couple months without buying any Neo or arcade related carts/pcbs before I decide on a new game. I don't have to have that shiny kit or original label. As long as the cart isn't a boot and works, I'm fine with it. I've never collected posters or other Otaku related knick knacks, can't say I care for it. Stopped collecting baseball and other cards in 4th grade

Haven't completed a current gen game in a long time. My attention span is waning for games that take hours to complete. Rather throw a few rounds into Gyruss then bother firing up the 360.

Been bitten by the arcade machine bug instead. Would rather spend the time and money on a few games I'll be playing indefinitely. Also I've always enjoyed the repair and maintenance aspect. There's a certain degree of accomplisment you feel when you've restored a non working cab, probably moreso than beating the actual game itself.

I've still got a lot of my MVS kits but I can't play them because I don't have the means to.

Been meaning to finish selling them off but I've been lazy.

I don't know, guess one day I just kind of stopped caring about the whole thing.

Wasn't really due to a particular moment of clarity or anything.

Just kind of hard to justify the whole process I guess.

Got better things to spend my money on (new vehicle, apartment, etc...) and better things to spend my time with (books, games I'll actually play, exercising, relationships, etc...)

I like relaxing in front of a joystick with a beer, diet pepsi or whatever, so I like having a an MVS with a sturdy joystick and good supergun. I won't tolerate paying people like xmods what they want for their overpriced MVS carts (for example) - I dont like the greed if collecting and watching people try to jack prices and create their own lucrative markets, so I got out of it. And you know - it is just plastic.

I remember looking at a shelf full of HC games I had collected - I was at the point where I was too afraid to touch them. What's the point of paying all this money again? Oh yeah - there isnt one.

People on this site (too many of them) always try to get the better of you in a deal - and when it comes to collectable goods, I understand what they're going through, but I just didnt want to be like those people anymore.

I also had a similar experience as Wasabi - I was at a friends house and he had one of his friends over who was OBSESSED with guitar hero or something - just acting like a general super-spaz (also a future shop worker). "Do I look and sound like that?" I asked myself - at which point I realized that I most people probably associated videogame fandom with that type of person. I've never completely advertized my love of videogames, but this was one of those things that make you go futher into the closet.

The only games I ever really collected were home carts even then I never had more than 40 or so. However over the last 10 years I have amassed a considerable amount of other games. In fact over the last month I've gotten more games than I have in the entire last year(12 or so). Not only can they be a waste of time and money but there's just so many other things you can be doing/spending your time and cash on.

I'll sell off a chunk here and there to raise cash or just get rid of stuff that doesn't get played.

I've never been the kind of gamer that has had to collect over 300 games for whatever system just for the hell of it.

I do however collect movies and that is something I don't think I'll ever stop doing.:oh_no:

I sold off most of my collection as well. No room and needed money to build my own home theater prompted me to do it. I probably sold off over 6k worth of stuff and to be honest, I don't really miss the games I sold. Really, I would never want to play Virtual Boy, 3DO, 32X, NGCD, NGPC (blashemy!), and even some rare AES games (like US Stakes Winner). I can always play alot of these thru emulation but even the, I don't bother.

I realize that I love READING about retrogames more than actually playing them. That's why I buy every issue of Retrogamer, I love their articles, I love seeing old box arts, and every once in awhile, I would go back to play a few of the highlighted games. Don't get me wrong, I still have a decent collection (Saturn, Sega CD, PS1).

In fact, I tried to sell off any games I finish these days. No sense of keeping them around when I know I rather play either newer games, or mame :)

Basically the moment I lost the video game "collector" bug was midway through my undergraduate degree. At that point I was able to sell off a rare game and not "miss" it one month later. The minute I realized that I no longer regretted selling off my games was the moment I lost my love of collecting.

I have always been a collector in one way or another whether it was mint on card star wars figures or full mvs kits but as most have said games are meant to be played and its nowhere near as much fun looking at a closed cardboard box when you could be actually playing the game!

So once i started with mvs again i got mostly loose used carts and dont really care what condition the cart is in or whether the label is english japanese or ripped to fuck as long as the game works

I also decided to sell much of my star wars items as no fun just looking at them

when people think of collectors though most think that means minty mint but I know a lot of star wars collectors who dont care about condition as long as its part of their focus

however even though i buy the games to play now i do have one brand new unplayed mvs kif of ssv special due to the fact it was the last mvs game and I wont miss playing that game as i think its pretty crap myself with some of the shittest backdrops ever

but it is good to own for the collector thats left in me

Oldtimers here may remember my once massive collection which I put on Ebay for advertisement value and sold for a princely sum. To put it frankly, I felt like I did everything there was to do with gaming; I ran an import store, worked for pro mags, met many of the famous Japanese devs, ran my own arcade, explored import frontiers that few have done outside of emus, put my hand in dev, became one of the top VF players placing 2nd at EVO2K4, etc. More importantly though, I felt that there was more to life than waiting for game x to come out, to seek out game y or become good at game z. I probably was like many of the obsessed people here or anyone else who are hardcore into anything; overweight, bit awkward, basically the stereotype that anyone would recognize. Before selling my stuff, I had a down period where I didn't sell anything off but started my exit by losing 90 lbs over a year or so (went from size 36 to 29/30, XL to S) and just changing my whole lifestyle. Come forward a few years later, I have started to buy some games again but mostly only nostalgic stuff, pieces that have a lasting impression, and some stuff I also was interested in but could never acquire outside of Japan. A good motto is to only buy what you will play right away and if you do sell your stuff, it'll be hard to get some stuff back in the condition you once had it (it is for me anyway).

Easy, 2003, thanks to a fully modded Xbox. I sold...everything.

Now all I have is X360 (2 games) and a DS (10 games).

A far cry from my collection of a dozen+ systems and over two-hundred games.

I haven’t stopped; I’ve just slowed down a ton. I simply refuse to play over inflated prices for old shit. Some of the prices on these games make me want to puke. Even worse are the dipshits couldn’t care less about gaming looking to turn a quick buck on crap sites like eBay.

Basically, other than places like here and Digital Press, the “retro” gaming scene has been ruined. Hell, I can’t even go to a fucking pawnshop now without hearing “internet prices” or “Well, this is what it goes for on eBay.”

I was able to clean up during the small time before eBay but after the game shad depreciated a ton…you know, games like Final Fantasy, River City Ransom, Contra etc for $2 each. For the most part I have what I want. I have a few things left to get but I’m in no hurry, I’m willing to wait out the good deals.

I have had big collections in the past but have sold pretty much everything off. I still tend to pick up way more than I need but it is always with the idea that I will be playing it and not as an investment.

I find that I like to read about games (and what is coming out) more than actually playing them sometimes.

I’ve pretty much have lost interest in collecting since I moved in December. It started when I gave away a bunch of crap (toys) that I have had in storage for the last 7 years. Then I started selling games... I used to hate selling games and would regret doing it, but now for me there is no need to have all the games that I haven’t played in months or years or a complete MOTW MVS kit and the home cart. My cab gets play maybe once a month, so I’ve started to sell off the MVS kits. I’ll thinking about selling off the “woody” and picking up a candy cab again and I’m sure that I’ll replace the kits that I sell off with bare carts, but that isn’t going to be for a few years, so we will cross that bridge when I get there.

I don’t think that it helps that I have little to no interest in any of the next gen system. PS3 and 360 don’t have enough games that interest me to drop the money on the system and I can’t stand the Wii… I might get a 360 when Ace combat 6 and Dagon Blue come out, but my hate of Microsoft might be too strong :D and I may just wait a few more years to pick one up.

Or it could be that I’m just getting old and right now I would rather focus on my wedding and getting a house.

But by your estimation, do you think you got back what you spend on all that? It was ALOT of games/systems as I recall.

yeah i have to be honest on the ROM thing. MAME pretty much killed a whoooooole lotta interest in collecting.

I have 2 HD's with every game i want to play. from gameboy to Saturn to DC to Wii.

but as i said, there are a few gems that are just nice to have.

I was a big collector during the Dreamcast days. Now I hardly touch games like I used to. Most of my stuff is sitting in boxes in the basement. I should probably sell most of it, but I don't have the heart to, thinking some day I'll go back and play some of those games. I buy like 1 game every 3 months, where I used to buy several games a month. All I ever play is Virtual Console on the Wii, or a DS game here and there. My buying and collecting has taken a huge dip since I got Gamefly, and I'm considering dropping it. I spend more time reading, or hanging out with friends these days.

I really doubt you will go back to playing your older games and if you do, it would probably be rare. If you don't play it now and don't think you will be playing it in the near future, I would sell it off.

I held on to my collections for the reason you stated. However, I sold off most of what I had and have never felt bad about it. I always thought I would go back to playing my older games but there was always something newer coming out that took up my time. And then of course, there is family ect. which is way more important.

WTF? Dude either you have me confused with someone else or you are completely misinformed. I have never tried to overcharge for mvs carts, in fact my prices are below what i paid. If you are reffering to a trade offer i had several months ago then you are way off base. I simply used someones ebay sale as an example that people were paying lots of money for viewpoint. I never ever said i wanted that much money i simply wanted to trade. And for your information i sold the cart for $100 with the shockbox right here on the selling forum. Now what do you have to say? People on this site (too many of them) always try to get the better of you in a deal - and when it comes to collectable goods, I understand what they're going through, but I just didnt want to be like those people anymore.

I also had a similar experience as Wasabi - I was at a friends house and he had one of his friends over who was OBSESSED with guitar hero or something - just acting like a general super-spaz (also a future shop worker). "Do I look and sound like that?" I asked myself - at which point I realized that I most people probably associated videogame fandom with that type of person. I've never completely advertized my love of videogames, but this was one of those things that make you go futher into the closet.
